How do I know what kind of router I should get?

I'm looking for a wireless router to get my laptop connected to the internet my desktop has.  What do the jumbles of numbers and letters attached to the different routers MEAN?  How do I know which one to get?

Unless you plan to play internet games a standard "G" router will do fine.  The numbers you describe indicate the speed and version.  The older "B" routers will have "11" for 11mByte per second while the "G" router will have "54" for 54mByte per second.
An alternate method to connect your laptop is to have an "Ad-Hoc" network.  There is not a router in this type.  One PC, normally a desktop, is wired to the internet modem.  This PC will have a wireless adapter card and acts an access point.  All other PCs in the network will need a wireless adapter card.  This method works well, is cheaper and has less hardware.  I recommend XP for the access point PC.  The only disadvantage is that the access point PC must remain on which isn't a bad idea to begin with.  Also the wireless range may suffer slightly.
FWIW, I have an Ad-Hoc network.  My son took the router to college and I was forced to explore options.  It works very well and is quite stable.  My access point PC runs on XP while an older PC is running 98se.  The newer "G" equipment may not run on Windows 98.  This isn't a problem here as I am still using "B" equipment.  I hope this helps.

Try using VLC (just search for it on Google). It's an open source video player that will play most downloadable video files.

  • How do you know what kind of ssd your macbook pro has?

I have an older macbook pro (the one with a intel core 2 duo) but I don't know which kind of ssd it has. I checked system profiler but I did not see it. I have not upgraded it so I am assuming this is the default ssd. I want to also upgrade the ssd, but nor sure which one is good. I was thinking OCZ Vertex SATA II 2.5'' (not sure what size 50-480 gb).

Go to System Profiler > SERIAL-ATA > Then you will have the Model numbers - Just google them & you should get your drive!

  • How can I know what kind of field is?

    Hi,
I have a function that receive a field, and depends of the kind of field (Text, numeric or date) is necesary execute a expecific script.
Is it possible ask to the field if it is a numeric, text or date field?
    Thanks

I have no straight answer for this situation... However you may achieve this using workaround methods using following two properties...
$.name or this.name gives you the name of the fields you gave at design time. So name those three fields they way you can easily identify their type with their name. And build you logic based on that.
You may also use $.className or this.className to get what kind of the field it is but not to the granularity to the level of your expectation.
I prefer the first one. Try that and let us know what you found.
    Good luck,

  • How do you know what Mac Mini version you are getting?

I heard that as of September 2005, Apple had completly updated there Mac Mini's.. I heard that they put in a 64mb 9200 Graphic Card, and all had Bluetooth and Airport.. But, how would I know that what I am getting is the updated version? Compusa's Mac Mini has the July 2005 config posted, but no September updated specs..
Thanks! If I can get this issue resolved, I might be picking up the September 05 Mac Mini. I'm new, so I hope I posted this on the right place!

Will it be just luck if I pick up the updated version
or does the box state the actual spec's in the
    store?
If not, then this really will get madd. I was
thinking about switching over to Mac from WXP but if
they can't market/organize there specs better then
Apple won't get my XP to Mac switch. Plain and simple.
All you can do is assume that the specification Apple quote for the mini, and that is printed on the box, is the specification of the system you are buying. If it turns out to be uprated, you are fortunate, but otherwise it'll be exactly what you paid for.
Clearly, if Apple were ONLY selling uprated models, the specification they quote would be changed to reflect that fact.
The decision to purchase a system should be based on whether the model available meets your needs. As to Apple not being able to organize their specifications better, you might consider the possibility that the reason they don't quote better specifications for minis being sold is because not all minis being sold meet those improved specifications.

  • Don't know what kind of application I should use to make this kind of proj.

I am going to make a project and I am not sure what kind of program would work for this document I want to make. The project I would like to make is of a type like a family tree, or a reverse sports playoff grid, where you start out with a few headers that branch out laterally and are linked with lines (just like a family tree graph) to many different headers. I want to have each of these headers as hyperlinks that you can click on to read more text/data/pictures about each header. I want to be able to add and edit it after I created it without major adjustments to the whole thing. Is this a clear question? Any help would be great. Thanks.

  • How do I know what kind of drive is ok to install into my Mac Pro 1.1?

    Can I install a "Samsung Desktop Class Spinpoint F3 1 TB SATA 3.0 Gb-s 32 MB Cache 3.5-Inch Internal Bare-OEM Drives, HD103SJ"
drive into my Mac Pro 1.1? (2x3 3 Ghz Dual-Core Intel Xeon processor.)
All the reviews for this drive were by people with PC's not Mac's. Also, my Mac Pro is a Tower so does it mean this "desktop class" won't work? Samsung has another one for $10 more that doesn't say "desktop" : the "1TB Samsung Spinpoint F3 SATA2 3.5" Hard Drive (32MB cache, 7200rpm)." Should I get that one instead?

Thanks, guys. I ordered and installed the drive I asked about, and it's working fine. The next drive will be the WD black, as you suggested. (It was too late for me to change my order when I read your recs.)
Having installed this I TB drive, I now want it to be my main one, with my system and all of my files moved to there. My current main drive, the one that came with the computer, is only 250MB and is almost full. My new question is: what's the best way to move everything? How do I get the new drive to have a working system folder and be the start up disk. I remember last time I tried to copy everything from one drive to another, the copied system wouldn't work on the new drive.

  • I'd like to replace my hard drive.  How do I know what to buy for my 15-inch early 2008 MacBook Pro?

I am out of room on my hard drive.  I'd like to get a new hard drive and restore my data to the new drive from Time Machine.  How do I know what kind of hard drive to buy for my 15-inch, early 2008 MacBook Pro?  Also, how hard is this to do?

I have changed HDDs several times on the old MBP.  Currently it has a Hitachi 500 GB HDD that came out of my new one.  My adage is that one cannot have too much storage and I think that the 1TB HDD is an excellent choice.  Not only do you get generous capacity, the performance should be (theoretically) comparable to a 750 GB 7200 rpm HDD.  I will be very surprised if there are compatibility problems.
If you bought the HDD from OWC, you should have received Installation instructions.  If not, go to the OWC website and look at the video.  I actually downloaded it so that I could hand write the instructions down step by step.  Also check out iFixit website.  They have step by step instructions that may prove to be useful.
Tools you need:  00 Phillips and #6 Torx Drivers (get good ones).   The instructions make mention of a plastic pry bar (spudger).  I use a stiff piece of plastic like a credit card.
Tips to keep in mind:  Get a large open table space and place a large clean towel on it.  That will protect your MBP and when you drop a screw (and you will) it will not bounce far so you will not have to spend an hour looking for it.
As you take out a set of screws, keep them together (I use wide masking tape.  The little screws will stick to it.)
Keep the sets in sequence.  That will make reassembly much, much easier.
The most difficult steps are removing the keyboard from the MBP body and removing the ribbon cable from the mother board.  In case of the former, work from the back (the display) to the front.  You will initially have to pry it up and then do a lot of jiggling to remove it.  Don't be too timid about it.  At the end of the ribbon cable there is a rectangular connector.  Use your credit card to remove it.  Just pry it off.
The #6 Torx driver is used to take off the 4 mounting pins on the HDD and if I remember correctly there is another place where it is needed, specifically in the battery compartment ( I think).  If the instructions don't say so, keep that in mind and inspect the screw before you select the driver.
Good luck and make sure that you don't have parts left over.
    Ciao.

  • What kind of log I can get with "level informational" - c2950 & 6500

Hello, everybody, It is nice to meet you. I am working in Tokyo in japan as network engineer.
It is my first time to write something on here Cisco Support Community and I don't speak English very well.
So I hope everyone understand my pour question and writing. But I wish somebody anwser to this question.
I am using kiwi sever to manage four of 6500 and about thirty of c2950.
The kiwi server is working normally logging both 6500's syslog and c2950's.
But I have question about difference between 6500's level informational and c2950's.
For example, When I log in 6500 I can get a log from my kiwi server.
And When I enter some command to change config I can also get a log from my kiwi server.
However When it come to c2950 I can't get the logs. I can only get logs that notice 'interface up/down' or 'changed config' stuff like that.
I think I have correct config about logging both 6500 and c2950 as follow.
Trap logging: level informational, OOOOO message lines logged
Logging to XX.XX.XX.XX, OOOOO message lines logged, xml disabled,
                   filtering disabled
Anybody know what kind of log I can get with "level informational" on c2950.
    Thanks everybody.

Information is a fairly low severity which means you'll get everything except debugging messages.  This includes link up/down, config change,
CPU hog, etc.  If you're not seeing messages other than link up/down and config change, then there may not be anything else happening on the switch which triggers a log message.  Check the output of "show log".  That should agree with your syslog logs.

  • If my iphone 4s doesn't support 4G LTE, then what kind of data would I get from the plan with 4G LTE Data?

I am currently have iphone 4s. I am planing to use the plan which have 4G LTE for data; however, my phone doesn't support 4G LTE. So, i want to know what kind of data would i get from this plan. Is it gonna be 4g or 3g or no data at all? I am very confused right now.
The plan is UNLIMITED WEB & TEXT WITH 100 MINUTES TALK.  Up to 5Gb of nationwide 4g lte data.
If you look at the plan it has 4g lte data, but my phone doesn't support it. Please answer my question.

Ask the wireless provider you have the plan with - they should be able to tell what speed
you will get if you cannot connect at 4G/LTE.
Your iPhone will connect at the highest speed it can by default. But not all wireless providers
offer 3G as the fallback connection on their 4G network - some fall back to 2G.
