How do I know what OS I have on my iMac? I've used it as a PC for years and need to switch over but I may be out of date with current software.  I think I read Lion somewehere....?  OS 10.5.8

Click on the Apple icon at the top left of your menu bar, then About this Mac.
OS 10.5.8 is Leopard. Lion is 10.7
    As for upgrading:
Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
but nobody knows for how long it will be available.
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Check via Software Update whether further updates are required.
You should now see the App Store icon, and you now need to set up your account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
To use iCloud you have to upgrade at least to Lion, but some functions are only available in Mountain Lion:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4759
You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:

The following is for this Apple document: iCloud: Photo Stream FAQ
What do I need to use Photo Stream?
To use Photo Stream, including Shared Photo Streams, you need an iCloud account, compatible devices, and up-to-date software:
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 6.0 or later
Mac with OS X Mountain Lion v10.8.2 or later and iPhoto 9.4 or Aperture 3.4 or later

You can still use Photo Stream without Shared Photo Streams if your devices meet these requirements:
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 5.1 or later
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and iPhoto 9.2.2 or Aperture 3.2.3 or later
PC with Windows 7 or Windows Vista (Service Pack 2) and the iCloud Control Panel v2.0 or later for Windows

Your post establishes you have an iPad 2.   Is that not the case?
An iPad 2 would be a Second Generation iPad.   an iPad 3 a Third Geneation iPad. and so on.

Look at what is happenning with your Mac when you run Activity Monitor.
    Macintosh-HD -> Applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor
Click on System Memory to get statistics on memory usage.  You should have some free memory.
When you have lots of page outs more memory will be helpful.  My entry for entry for Page ins/outs is:
    Page ins/outs: 29163/0
Notice I have 0 pageouts which says that I am not using my harddrive for extra memory space.  Thus, I have enough memory.
Activity Monitor has a neat feature where it can display a dynamic dock icon.  In Activity Monitor View > Dock icon > Show cpu history.

  • N97 - How do I know what Maps I have installed - a...

    As above!
I recently went to Thailand, and thought I had downloaded the map for Thailand before I went. But when I got there and started up MAPS it started to DOWNLOAD via packetdata (no thanks it would cost 10 Euro/Mb). Apparently the Thai map was not installed, and there were no way of telling (as far as I can see).
Also, How do I know when a new version of a particular map is out?
In my Car System they update 4 times a year and I know when. But Nokia leaves me in the Dark.

The only way to check if the map is correctly installed (other than  believing what Map Loader tells you) is to zoom in over the country concerned and check for the detail being present. Even though I've never had a problem, I always check this way after downloading just for the sake of paranoia.
Nokia Maps are typically updated four times a year, but you won't get a notification - any time you conenct to Map Loader it checks your existing data, and if new stuff is abailable it deletes the old before you get chance to object and you then download the new maps.

  • How do i know what version i have?

i know this sounds silly, but how do i know if i have a Mac OS X v10.3 or 10.4 or whatever?

nevermind, i figured it out. please ignore/delete this thread.

  • How can I determine what OS i have on my mac if it won't start up?

Hard drive is dead and I having a new one installed but the installer wants to know what Operating System I had.  I don't remember.

If the hard drive is dead, you can't get that information from it, but shouldn't need to have it before running a full OS installer.
If you're referring to a person and not an application by 'installer', the process varies depending on the computer's original OS. Append the last three characters of its serial number to http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/?search_keywords= and load the page; Macs which shipped with 10.6.8 or earlier require a disk, while newer ones have a recovery system, which is accessible by pressing the Option, Command, and R keys at startup.

  • I tried to download version 8.0 - how do I know what version I have?

When I tried to download version 8.0, like others have found it does not seem to "take". Firefox, I suggest you get on this with some assistance while we are still with you.

You can go to the About Firefox page to check your version. It looks like your user agent is messed up.
Type about:config in the URL bar and hit Enter
If you see the warning, you can confirm that you want to access that page.
    Filter = general.useragent.
Right-click the preferences that are bold, one line at a time, and select Reset.
    Then restart Firefox

  • HT1498 How do I know what generation my apple tv is ?

I just purchased my Apple TV yesterday for $109.00 it is absolutely amazing the technology and all the things you can do with it. I am still playing around with it trying to figure it out but my question is how do I know what generation I have !!?

Look at the tiny type toward the bottom of the underside of your device (use strong light and a magnifying glass). The second line starts with "Complies with..." and it ends with an "A" followed by a 4-digit code. If that code is "1378" you have a 2nd gen ATV, if it is "1427" you have a 3rd gen one.
