How do I know which airport card to purchase for ibook 14.1 LCD 900 MHz

I just bought a used ibook for my son and he wants to connect to our home wireless network. I can't tell if I need an Airport card or an Airport Extreme card. Do I need the Airport base station or will the card enable it to connect to any wireless network/hotspot?
We have 3 desktops and been faithful Mac users since the the very first one but I've never had so much trouble even trying to figure out what model this laptop is!

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu; if the computer has a G3 processor, it takes the AirPort card, while an iBook G4 takes the AirPort Extreme card.
Do I need the Airport base station or will the card enable it to connect to any wireless network/hotspot?
You can use any base station which supports the 802.11b or 802.11g protocols. An AirPort card cannot use 802.11g.

  • How to know which airport card?

Hi, I have an iBook G4 with the small display; an acquiantance has the same laptop and she can use the wireless internet at our house no problem. Now I know I don't need a base station to be able to log into wireless but I don't know which airport card I should get; express, extreme etc ... any clues?
    thanks

Rubens, Welcome to the discussion area!
That's easy! Every iBook G4 (without built-in wireless) uses the AirPort Extreme card.

  • How do i know which credit card is connected to my apple account?

Hi i just wanted to know if i was going to make a payment through apple how do i know which credit card the payment will be on, thanks.

On your computer's iTunes you should be able to view your payment info by going into the Store > View Account menu option and logging into your account, and on your account's details page there should be a payment link (you can only have one credit card on your account at a time). If you are doing it on your iPhone (or on an iPad or iPod Touch) then you could try tapping on your id in Settings > iTunes & App Stores and selecting 'View Apple ID' on the popup.

How do I know which Hard Drive to get for my MacBook 2006? The old Hard Drive is a Toshiba (MK8034GSX) S/N Z6APT2XUT 9H5 EC. A?

I've put a 250gb 7200rpm drive in an Early 2006 with no problems.
    For a new hard drive try Newegg.com http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCategory.aspx?SubCategory=380&name=Laptop-Hard-Dr ives&Order=PRICE
    Or OWC  http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/

To transfer your current hard drive I like the free application Carbon Copy Cloner. It makes a bootable copy of everything on your hard drive http://www.bombich.com/index.html You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. Check that it's set up right by booting up from the external drive. Then replace your old hard drive with the new one and put your old one in the external case.

If you don’t have the tools to open up the MacBook OWC has a set for $5

  • How do i know an airport card is installed & not working or not installed?

    My Mac details are:
    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Model Identifier: MacPro1,1
    Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
    Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz
I've always just connected to the internet via an ethernet cable to my router/modem, but now I don't want the long cord going from the phone line to the office within the house. I have a Airport Express and was wondering if I could set this up in the lounge and connect my computer/laptop/stereo etc.
To do this do I need to have an airport card installed. If so, which one and are they easy to instal?
    Appreciate any help.
    Cheers

If you remove the side door and look down at the mother board, you can observe if the airport card is there. You can also use ASP . There are kits for the bluetooth and airport card available. Installation is not difficult. The difficult part is finding the connector wires. these are tucked at the top border of the mother board. The other issue is which lead goes to which connector. You can find the answer on the internet, just Google it.
Bottom line on the original Mac Pro the wireless reliability with that card is short range. Must have not too much interference.

  • Help! How can I tell which Airport Card I have installed in my Mac Pro?

I bought a mac pro from comp usa in December, without the airport extreme option. I later got an airport card from apple on-line and took it to my Apple store to have it installed. I just don't know if it's the newer 802.11n card or an old 802.11g?
Any way to tell this in system profiler it just says:
Wireless Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x14E4, 0x87)
    Wireless Card Locale: USA
Wireless Card Firmware Version: Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (4.80.79.1)
    Thanks a lot!

There is only one model of AirPort card for the Mac pro ( it is draft 802.11n compatible ). Some other intel Mac's may or may not have had the 802.11n enabler update applied. The enabler is/was a $1.99 download from Apple, so priced as the FTC deemed that it "added" features rather than revised existing firmware.

  • How do I acces the Airport card on a new iBook 12"?

I have a 1.33Ghz 12" iBook G4. (The latest model.) Since the previous version Apple have changed the location of the AirPort Extreme card.
Previously it sat on top of the RAM slot. Adding RAM required the AirPort card to be removed. Now the RAM slot is accessible in its own covered slot in a similar location as before but the AirPort card is nowhere to be seen.
Any idea how I can access it?

I discovered that searching elsewhere since posting my question. It's a board rather than a card apparantly, like the Mac Mini.
I'd still like to know where it lurks though and how to get at it. I have a strong suspicion that it's playing up in my iBook. I've read various reports of incorrectly seated Airport cards causing kernel panics. I've spent the day working out that I have a very serious Airport problem. I have a sneaky suspicion that it's a badly connected or malfunctioning card/board.

  • How do I know which AirPort base station I am connected to?

I have an AirPort network which consists of a Time Capsule and 2 AirPort Expresses connected in 'extended' mode. I want to test each of the AirPort Express units to ensure that they are doing what they should be (i.e. extending my network). However, I can't figure out how to determine which base station I'm actually connected to at any given moment. When I look at the AirPort status in the menu bar or at Network Preferences it simply tells me the name of the network that I'm connected to but not the specific AirPort unit. Is there any way to see this information?
For all I know, I could be connected to the Time Capsule no matter when in my home I'm located.
    Cheers,
    Barry

OK, let's recheck some settings as you definitely should not be picking up a wireless signal from the TC if you have an Express much closer to the computer.
Using AirPort Utility here, click your TC and click Manual Setup.
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Wireless Mode should be set to "Create a wireless network"
There must be a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"
    Update to save any changes.
On each Express, using Manual Setup again.
Wireless Mode set to "Extend a wireless network"
The network name that the TC is creating should be displayed
There must be a check mark next to "Allow wireless clients"
Please check your settings to verify. Then start with only one Express device and put it in a another room not too far away from the TC. Power it up and keep your laptop close to the Express. Using the "option" click on the Airport icon, test to see if you see the MAC address of the Express. Any luck? If yes, then power down the first Express and test the second the same way, etc.
The "extend" a wireless network feature works like the hub and spoke of a wheel. The main router is the hub and Express devices are at the ends of the spokes. Each Express communicates directly with the TC. There are no "relays" or "in between" devices. If the TC is at one end of the house, you may find that you get better results using fewer Expresses. It will take some experimenting to get the best location for each Express, etc.

  • How do I know which memory card is bad?

I installed (a while back) 20 GB of memory. Now my system shows 12 GB. How do I identify the card that is bad so that I can replace it? And if I leave it as it is, will this crippled memory structure hurt the computer's performance?

Thanks Hatter & Grant. Sorry I took so long to get back; I had a number of distractions to deal with.
I looked at the lights on the cards at startup, and all 4 lights lit for both 8GB cards. I tried to run Apple Hardware Test, but have no way to do that: None of the 3 options in Help worked; the computer is not new, the OS is not old, and my OS disk from 2008 doesn't get to the Hardware test either; also tried running the Tester from Internet, but that didn't work.
I finally ran TechTool Pro 7.2. It showed that the computer was connected to 20GB! But it ran the memory test for 16.86 GB of 20 GB. I don't know what that meant. Successive runs of the memory test said it was testing 14.64 GB, then 14.53 GB out of 20 GB. But in the end, TechTool said that all 20 GB passed! And when I ran the SPD Data test in TechTool, it said all 20 GB passed.
Then when I looked at the Memory report through About This Mac, it showed 20 GB. It had been showing 12 GB before I started investigating. I suppose taking the side off the Mac to look at the memory lights could have jiggled the cards enough to make a difference. But a while back I had attempted to reseat the two cards, and that hadn't helped. I find it hard to believe that running TechTool would have had an impact, but I suppose stranger things have happened.
It is possible that when the side of the computer is put in place, it is bumping the memory cards. It looks like there could be a slight interferrence; the clearance is tight. So when I put the side back in place, I will try to make sure that the cards are not being moved.
And I did get the side panel in place, started the computer, and it now shows that 20 GB of memory is available. So I think the mostly likely cause of the problem was the side panel touching the memory cards - they stick out about 0.25".

  • How do I know which photoshop CS is best for me?

Hey now..  I'm having a hard time deciding which CS is best for me. I'd love some advice. Here is some information about me and my business.
My husband and I own a small screen printing business. We have been in business 8 years and we mostly print our own designs.
I am the graphic artist, he is the printer. I LOVE my photoshop 7.0. It gets the job done but I'm needing more but not too much more. For example, I'm wanting to type my text in a spiral without having to piece together and resize every word or letter. I know I can save time if I upgrade but I'm not sure what to upgrade to...
I've been told CS3. Will that be enough? if so, what is the difference between CS3 professional, standard, dreamweaver?
Help? and Thanks for your input/advice!

As a business, and with the sort of work you are doing, I would try to get the $10 a month Photography deal.  You would get tax breaks on the cost of Photoshop, and be able to produce some very cool designs with ease.
Look through this long list of tutorials.
    http://tv.adobe.com/show/learn-photoshop-cc/
    Check out:
    Scripted patterns and fills
    Design Improvements
    Any of the 3D tutorials
The 'Painting drawing and type' subsection.
And anything that looks interesting.  The difference between Photoshop CC and the very old Version 7, will astound you.  Some of it will take some learning, but this forum will always be here to help if you get stuck.

  • How can I know which IP port is free for use?

I am doing a internet project that the sender need to send voice at a port and receive the voice from another port.
I want to assign the port to the send function and receive function automatically, so I want to use some API to determine which port in local machine is free and assign that one for the function.

If you bind to port 0 the system will assign the next available port to you.

  • Which Airport card do I need for an iMac G4 Flat Screen 15"?

Hi, I have an iMac G4 (flat screen, with silver arm and round base), 15".
I'd be extremely grateful if someone could let me know which Airport card I need for this Mac and also whether or not I also require an adaptor. I have looked this up on the Apple site and also in 'The Flatscreen iMac for Dummies' book (I'm a complete technophobe, I'm afraid!), but am none the wiser.
If possible, model numbers for the Airport card and adaptor that I do need would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Jeremy

Choose About this Mac from the Apple menu and click on More Info, or if you're running Mac OS 9, choose Apple System Profiler from the Apple menu. Check the speed of the computer's CPU; if it is below 1GHz, you need the regular AirPort card, with the AirPort Extreme card being used on newer iMacs. No iMac G4 requires an adaptor to use an AirPort card.

  • Which airport card to install on g4 imac (17")

i just bought a new imac and want to put my g4 imac in another room. i'd like to install an airport card so i can access the internet through the time machine (which is connected to the new imac). i'm having trouble figuring out which card to get--airport card or airport extreme? i'm not even certain my g4 can take an airport card? how do i know which card to get? please help. thanks.

So when you run System Profiler and look in Network->AirPort Card there is information there? If nothing is there your iMac G4 does not have the card installed. None of the iMac G4s had the card automatically installed when they left the factory. If your iMac G4 has the card, then someone installed it later or they ordered it as a build option.
If the card is installed and if AirPort is enabled in System Preferences-> Network preference pane, you should see an AirPort icon in the menu bar. If you click on this icon you will see a list of networks that your iMac has detected. Does your network appear there?
