How do I limit the amount of space Time Machine uses?

Right, so the drive I was using for Time Machine had a most lovely volume failure. Somehow, I managed to fix it. The drive itself is fine but I find this all out after I buy a Drobo to replace it with (plenty of other of reasons for buying it, so it's OK).
Anyway, I've transitioned all of my files onto the Drobo and now want to use part of it for Time Machine. However, there's a snag. There are only two ways I know to do this:
1. Partition part of the drive and tell Time Machine to use that. Would work except the guys behind the Drobo specifically say "Don't use your Drobo with Disk Utility. It'll just mess thing sup." So partitioning is out of the question.
2. Time Tamer, a handy little script that does some magic and gives me a Sparse Bundle to use for Time Machine that is twice the size of my internal drive. That would work great. Except I only want it to be 1 TB instead of 2 TBs. I never even come close to filling the drive itself and the last Time Machine backup I had was only 1 TB and I had yet to even fill that after... Oh... Six months or so.
I'm sure there's a way for me to do number two manually but I have no idea how. I'd really apprecaite it if someone could point me in the right direction. Google isn't helping.

You cannot limit what TM uses on the drive. You can partition the drive and assign a specific partition as the TM backup drive. If you do this then be sure that partition is at least twice the capacity of the drive it backs up.
You don't pre-size a sparsebundle. It simply expands or contracts as needed. Given sufficient time TM will fill up any drive.
If your Drobo consists of RAIDed drives, then you cannot partition it. If it comes as two separate drives, then use one for backup.

How do I limit the amount of space used by photos on my phone - now that I turned iCloud on it is taking over my phone

    Hello Maahk,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you would like to optimize your Photos storage. If you are using iCloud Photo Library on your iPhone, please read over the information in the attached article.
iCloud Photo Library FAQ - Apple Support
Can I use iCloud Photo Library to save space on my device?
iCloud Photo Library automatically keeps all your photos and videos in the original, high-resolution version. Follow these steps to choose how you store your photos and videos on your device:
In iOS, tap Settings > iCloud > Photos or Settings > Photos & Camera, then select a storage setting.
In OS X, click Photos > Preferences > iCloud, then select a storage setting.
If you turn on Optimize [device] Storage, iCloud Photo Library will automatically manage the size of your library on your device, so you can make the most of your device's storage and access more photos than ever. All of your original, full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud while device-size versions are kept on your device. You can download the original photos and videos over Wi-Fi or cellular when you need them.
If you turn on Download Originals, iCloud Photo Library will keep your original, full-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and on your device. Download Originals is the default setting for iOS devices with the free 5 GB storage plan and for all Mac devices.
    Have a great day,
    Joe

  • How can I limit the amount of space on a Time Capsule used by Time Machine?

I know that you cannot partition a Time Capsule drive.  However, I was wondering about other options for limiting the amount of space used by Time Machine so that I can use the rest of the space for other purposes.
I heard something about creating a disk image on the Time Capsule to limit the amount of space used by Time Machine.  If I create a disk image, would TM just use all the space that's not part of the disk image?  How do I access the disk image part?  Can I manually drag and drop files to it from my Mac like any other external drive?  Could I set up the disk image part to work with a Windows computer?
I've also heard things about modifying sparsebundles which I don't know anything about.  How does this work?  What happens to the space that is not part of the TM sparsebundle?  How do I access it?  Can I manually drag and drop files to it from my Mac like any other external drive?  Could I set up the extra space to work with a Windows computer?

Some other things to make note of:
Some disk image formats have a maximum size and only use that size after they have had to expand to actually hold that much data. Make sure you are not using this type of image so you can guarantee the space is reserved. Sparse bundles are like this. I haven't read up on the sparse bundle trick, but I assume it's something to do with setting a maximum size for it.
When you open up the Time Capsule disk, you will first be looking at the normal storage space. When you create an image, there will be a file you click on that mounts another drive that uses space on the Time Capsule. This shows up as just one file unless you open it to see it's contents.

When I look in Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel it reports Firefox as 5.44GB. Could this be true? If so how do I reduce the amount of space it is taking up?

It is quite common for the program size listings to be wrong. To check the actual size of the Firefox installation, you can manually check the size of the Firefox [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Installation_directory installation directory]. It is is typically around 26-30Mb, and the default location on 32 bit Windows is C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\
There are also a couple of other locations where Firefox stores data, check the size of the following folders as well.
Firefox also stores user data such as bookmarks and passwords in the [[profiles|profile folder]]. It should be inside this folder C:\Users\''username''\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\
Firefox stores temporary files in the cache. To find the location of the cache, type '''about:cache''' into the location bar. It should be inside this folder C:\Users\''username''\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\
The last 2 folders are normally hidden, you may need to set Vista to [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial130.html show hidden files and folders].

  • How do I manage the amount of space for back up on a timecapsule

I have a 1GB time capsule that is stating that it is full. I only use it  for back up of my macbook. I want to add a pc to it for backup purposes. Is there a way to manage the amount of space one user uses?

First, you'll need some sort of app on the PC to do backups to a network location.
Second, mixing Time Machine backups and other data on the TC's internal HD presents some conflicts.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule for details and some possible workarounds.   Your easiest option is to connect a USB drive to the TC and back the PC up to it.
If you still want to do both backups to the TC's internal HD, you have two unattractive options:
Erase the TC's internal HD, and let Time Machine start fresh.
Manually delete a lot of old Time Machine backups to make room for the PC backups.  See #12 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions and don't miss the pink box there.

  • HT3919 In the past was able to adjust the memory for each individual application, my Illustrator CS5 appears is doesn't have enough memory to complete a particular project. How do I boost the amount of memory that Illustrator uses so I can complete my pro

In the past I have always been able to adjust the memory of each individual application,
my Adobe Illustrator CS5 appears that is doesn't have enough memory to complete a particular project.
How do I boost the amount of memory that Illustrator uses so I can complete my project?

With OS X, it automatically allocates RAM and it can't be allocated manually.
What model Mac do you have and what OS X version is it running. Your profile shows a PowerMac and OS 10.6.8. A PowerMac can't run OS 10.6.8. It's max OS is 10.5.x
How much RAM is installed in your Mac? You need to max out the RAM and close other open apps if you are having problems with Illustrator.

  • How do I reduce the amount of space that "Other" takes up on my macbook pro.

I've just bought a new macbook pro with Retina display & running Yosemite. I have the 128Gb version.
Initially I downloaded all my music into iTunes, but after seeing that it took up almost 40Gb of the 128Gb I decided to delete it from the Macbook. But now I find that I have 40Gb of "Other" in it's place. Does anyone know what "Other" is and how I can reduce it's bulk? (Image attached)

  • How do I limit the amount of emails in my inbox

We have a mail server at our business, I receive my mail on my PC, laptop,iPad and iPhone. The iPhone and iPad fetch my mail and as soon as I read my mail on my iPhone or iPad it loads old mail from the server. This did not happen before our last update from Apple.
This means I pay at least 3 time to download my mail.
Is it possible to limit the amount of mail and only receive the heading and download the rest should you need to?

This is no longer an option.
Feel free to let Apple know about it by sending them feedback:  www.apple.com/feedback

  • How can I reduce the amount of storage my iPhone uses for messages?

Is there any way to reduce the amount of storage space my iPhone uses for Messages?  Can I limit the storage to the last year or some other limit (specific date, specific amount of storage etc.)?
    Thank you

I'm not sure there is a solution to your question, other than to not keep so many photos on your devices.  If you delete a photo from photo stream, it will delete it from all your devices.  To keep them, first save them to your camera roll (tap Edit, tap the photos, tap Share, tap Save to Camera Roll), then import them to your computer as explained here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083.  However, given the number of photos you have, a much more practical solution would be to transfer them to your computer using an app like PhotoSync, which will select them all at once and transfer them over wifi.
I'm not sure why you're seeing such a discrepancy in the amount of space taken up by your photos.  It's possible that something is corrupt given the large number of photos on your device.

  • How can I change the frequency of when Time Machine reminds me to backup?

I used to get a pop up every ten days telling me that it's been ten days since I backed up Time Machine, but since the last time I backed it up, it's started notifitying me everyday. I'm just wondering if there's a way I can change the frequency, since I usually just back it up every few months and I don't keep my external hardrive hooked up all the time.
    Thanks!

That's not a particularly wise backup strategy. You should backup at least once per week. Time Machine is designed to backup hourly if left alone. You should have a permanent backup drive that remains connected to the computer at all times except, perhaps, when you are traveling.
If you disconnect the backup drive then Time Machine will start to save snapshots on your computer until the backup drive is reconnected at which time the snapshots are transferred to your backup drive and erased from the computer's drive.
You can use a utility such as TimeMachineEditor 3.0.3 to change Time Machine's backup interval.

  • How do you limit the amount of digits in a text field?

If a user was to input 9 digits into a text field. How do you make it so that an error message would appear if the user inputs more than 9 digits

That code will set the TextFields length to 9 standard charecters (might not be 9 though) To limit the number of charecters and throw an error message I would use a listener on the textField. Perhaps a keyListener that keeps track of the number of charecters. ( swing has document listeners which are really nice )

  • How do I chose the amount of space I want my music to take up on my iPad mini?

UGH!!!!!! This is ridiculous!!! In the past I could chose the amount of memory I wanted allocated for music. Now I have two options. Put my ENTIRE LIBARY on my 16gb iPad OR automatically fill ALL THE FREE SPACE WITH SONGS. Which by the way every single time I do this it picks the SAME SONGS EVERY TIME!! I want to pull my hair out, punch the walls, beat my dog! For real. I don't understand why every "upgrade" to iTunes is actually a downgrade. 12 *****. I will be trying to downgrade if I can.

You need to go to your iPad in iTunes and then go to Summary. In that window there is an Options box. Make sure "Manually Manage Music and Videos" is checked.

  • How can I limit the amount of time my Safari Browser remains open?

Since I live way out in the country, I am limited to EXEDE ViaSat, for internet.  I know it is archaic to pay for limited data, but I'm stuck with it.  On my iPad, I can limit the time my browser is open, so it closes automatically if I'm not using it.  My iMac (OS X Maverick 10.9.5 - using Safari 7.1.4) stays open and burns up data like crazy.  I looked, in Safari Preferences, and can't find any place to limit the time the browser stays open.  Can someone, please, help me do that? Thanks.

Thanks for responding babowa.  Actually, if my husband or I forget to shut down the browser, and walk away - even though nothing is happening - it continues to use data. Just today, we blew through 2GB, and we're only actively using the browser for about 15 minutes. I left the browser open for my husband, but he didn't get to it, and it didn't get shut it down.
Hitting Command Q isn't really a solution, for us.  If we remember, we click the red button in the upper left corner, of the browser page and it closes the browser.  The problem is, sometimes we forget to close the browser and it continues to use data. On my iPad and cell phone, it automatically closes the browser after 30 seconds.  I'm looking for a way to to that on my iMac.
