It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. To use a device with a new computer you transfer the content from the old computer (or its backup) directly to the new computer, not the device to the new computer. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.

If you purchased all of the songs through itunes store, please follow these steps:
1. Open up Itunes and Click on Itunes Store
2. Once you're in the Itunes Store look to right side of the screen and you should see the word "purchased". Click purchased and you'll be sent to a purchase screen.
3. Click on "All Songs" and then it will show all the songs you've downloaded. From there you just hit the button that looks like a cloud with an arrow on it, and it will download all the songs all over again.
If you didn't purchase them through Itunes, then you'll have to download software that will strip the songs from your iPod. And here is a guide about how to import music from iPod to iTunes. Hope it helps. Feel free to email me if you need further help.

Hi,
I have just bought a new computer because i had to throw my old one out and it was not possible to back up my music from the hard drive.
However, i have my entire music collection on my iPod clssic.
I have downloaded and installed iTunes on to my brand new laptop and can not workout how to import the music from my iPod.
When I try I get a warning message stating that my iPod is paired with another library and if I attempt to sync it with the iTunes I have just installed then it will erase the content of my iPod and replace it with the content of my library (which is empty at present)
Can anyone help please?

Connect your iPod to your new computer. When you get the message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

I need to update my ipod software, but it says I have purchased music not in my itunes library. After (finally) locating the incriminating Ke$ha album, I cannot transfer it. I cannot drag it from my ipod, but it does not show up in my purchased music or anywhere I can drag from. Copy/pasta does not help.

Have you failed to maintain a backup copy of your computer?
The ipod is not a storage/backup device. It simply mirrors the selected content of the computer to which you sync.
The sync is one way - computer to ipod. the only exception is itunes purchases: FIle>Devices>Transfer Purchases
You may be able to purchase a 3rd party program ( not supported by Apple) to do this.
