How do I "locate" missing music files on my pc?

After transferring all my contents from my old pc to my new pc, my itunes library had many many songs with an exclamation point next to them and it says they can't be located. Any help?

Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. If possible move the folders around so that the media ends up where the library is looking for it.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

You should always make a bootable backup BEFORE you do major updates.
If things go wrong you can always revert to what you had previously.
You can do this with Carbon Copy Cloner or Super Duper. (I use CCC for a long time, and I'm very satisfied about it, I can recommend it)
It used to be donation ware, but now you need to pay a small fee. Not a big price for always knowing you're safely backed up.

didn't need it myself since I waited to update, I always check this forums first to find out what are the issues/bugs. When there seems to be none or little problems, I update. I've learned my lesson long time ago. Patience is a good thing...
So, always backup. More important than your changing underwear daily. Time machine isn't enough. Make two bootable clones. One at your place and one at a different location (theft, fire, ...), you can always revert from there.

cannot locate original music file error message ??? i transferred to a new laptop then some of my music collection seems to get this message .

This happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.

Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. How can I store my music files on an external hard drive and listen to them through iTunes that way? At the moment they're both on the external hard drive and also stored on the computer but I'm quickly running out of memory on my iBook G4 so I'd like to only keep them on the external hard drive and, if possible, delete them from my computer's hard drive. At the moment, when the hard drive isn't plugged in a lot of the files won't play and I get the exclamation mark next to the particular song in iTunes, but everything plays fine when the hard drive is plugged in.

Sounds like your files are playing from the external drive already. To check go to iTunes - Preferences - Advanced and check the Media Folder Location. Change it to the external drive if you need to.

If you used the Finder to move the files, iMovie will have lost track of them. iMovie holds the locations of the Event files, and Project files contain references to those locations. If you move the files, iMovie has no way of knowing where they are.
If you can, first move all the files back to their original locations. Plug in the external drive. Open iMovie and move the files in iMovie's interface (help explains how, but basically, just drag and drop in the event pane).
Then you can connect the drive to the new computer, and iMovie will see them.

You can't do that.
And before you decide to store any music that you own on a computer at work, talk to your IT department. Many organizations do not permit it for legal reasons. Standard policies are that anything stored on company owned computers is the property of the company. It could not be legally stored on their machines unless you transfer the licenses and all copies, physical and digital, to the company, meaning you no longer own the music. If they were to be audited and could not prove that they own the music, they would be subject to copyright violation penalties. Just use your iPod when you're at the office if you want to listen to music.

If you download Adode Reader (free but very limited) or GoodReader (many features) - you can use file sharing.

I do not have iMovie, so I can't try this!
Run iTunes with your iPad connected to the computer, either by the USB cable or by WiFi. Select the iPad under DEVICES in iTunes. Click on Apps at the top of the window and scroll down to File Sharing. If iMovie appears there, select it. The Documents window to the right is where you transfer files to (Add) and from (Save To) the iPad.

Solved! Music was in Itunes folder but not in Media folder within that. It doesn't seem like a very user friendly system so far!

ITunes stops working when I try to import missing music files

I don't know why, but every time I try to import missing music files into iTunes, a pop up suddenly comes up saying iTunes has stopped working. Does anybody know if it may just be a bug in the program or anything like that? Because of this, I am now having to manually reimport the missing files which takes forever!! Please help!!.

Song files are just files. You can copy them the way you copy any other files, like photos or documents.
