How do I "lock" sensative files?

I have a file on my computer with all of my sensative information in it that I don't want anyone getting access to. I have my computer password protected and I was thinking of doing the "filevault" thing but then I read this
"In my opinion, FileVault is cumbersome and unnecessary overkill for most people. To protect those sensitive files you do have -- like, say, your Quicken data files, or a file with your password list -- put them on an encrypted sparse disk image (created in Disk Utility). "
So, how do I do what that person said? I'm not very good at all this and need really simple directions. Thanks so much!

Locking on UNIX is cooperative, not manditory. That means that all applications need to check for the lock explicitly and then not use the file if the lock exists.
But if something is accessing the file beyond your control, locking isn't going to prevent it.
If you do control all the access points, then take a look at lockf or flock functions.

synchronized is used to synchronize threads in the current process. A daemon is not in the same process so it will have absolutely no impact.
Locking a file is OS dependent so you will have to craft a solution appropriate for the OS you are on. And you will probably have to use JNI to do it. Presumably your OS supports locking.

If you run your system as a non-administrator, then the other user's folders are locked.
If you then use Fast Switching, those folders are merely a mouse click (and password) away.

I am importing separate wav and video files. How do I lock the audio file to the video file after I sync them so that when I cut any video the audio stays in sync? Or is there a way to embed the new audio into the video footage?

You can do that in Final Cut Pro X, but not in iMovie.
A good workaround in iMovie is to line up the WAV file with your video clip. Then use SHARE/EXPORT USING QUICKTIME/Movie to QuickTime Movie/Options/Video Options/Compression/Apple Intermediate Codec. Save this file to a place you can find it. Then import it back into iMovie using FILE/IMPORT MOVIE...

It doesn't sound like the PDF was password protected (or Adobe Reader would prompt you for a password). Instead, it sounds like that file may be marked locked by your operating system. Are you on Mac OS or Windows? In either case, here are instructions for removing the lock icon from the file:
Remove the Lock Icon from a Folder in Windows 7 (check Microsoft's website if you have a different version of Windows)
On Mac OS, select the file in the Finder, and choose File > Get Info. Then, just deselect the Lock checkbox.

Of course. There is even a class for it. However, be forewarned, locks only work when everything "plays nice". If one program locks it, and another program doesn't bother to attempt locking it before doing something with it, it will be able to "pull the carpet out from under" the locking process.
If you mean "lock" in the "Windoof" sense (in that absolutely nothing can do absolutely anything with a file when something else has it locked), no.
