How do I login remotely without taking over current screen?

That is, unlike use of TightVNC with Screen Sharing enabled, I want to create a whole new session when I connect/login. I know how to login remotely using ssh, but this gives me only a Terminal. I know how to use TightVNC to take over the session currently displayed on the screen, but this isn't what I want to do: I want to create a new session, displaying it on the remote computer, whether via X tunnled through SSH, VNC, or some other method I haven't thought of, without interfering with the current session on the Mac's physical display.
Oddly enough, I can't find an answer to this searching support, I get results like "A third party VNC viewer will always be connected to the login window." (from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4715). But I don't GET this behavior under Snow Leopard, and the previous sentences at the above reference seem to imply that this behavior is only under Lion. Is that true?
BTW: TightVNC asks the remote computer user exactly two questions before doing the connection: "VNC server" and "password". It does not ask for the user's login on the system being connected to. This seems to contradict the wording at the above KB article, which seems to imply that the third party VNC client should be asking for the username.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I was really hoping that that was not the right answer, but that is the way I read the KB article, too. I just wanted to be absolutely sure.
Then again, there is another remote (pun intended) possibility I still cannot exclude: is it possible to login by SSH and then start up a separate instance of the Mac GUI? The KB article does imply, as you said, that there is no other way to do this with VNC, but this other possibility would obviate that.

Is there a way I can login to my desktop (running 10.8.2) and work remotely - without screen sharing?
I am talking about full desktop access, logged in remotely, without disturbing the session of another user who is logged in, and physically in front of the computer.
I have spent a long time googling and cannot figure out if such a solution exists, either within the base OS, Apple Remote Desktop, or commercial solutions.
In an ideal world such a solution would also be cross-platform so that the remote client could be either Mac or Windows.

I answered my own question.
By setting up another account it is possible to remote login with a VNC client. When connecting to the mac the login screen is presented. Provided that you login to an account that is not the front account running on the mac, that session is not disturbed.
Thus it is possible to run with full access to apps and data, on another account and session separate from the session that is already logged on.
However, if during that VNC session you switch users and login to the front account, you now will be the only session and will be controlling that screen. After that point you have to disconnect the VNC client, and re-log back in in order to leave the front account undistrubed.

New Account or Just Taking Over Current Account? (...

Hi guys
Apologises for the seemingly long post here but hope that it explains the situation that we're in (and it got complicated today as you'll see). Hope someone can help/advise/give back some sanity over the issue.
Due to an unexpected change in circumstances, the name in which the phone & broadband is in is having to change. The person who is taking over the account is presently a sub-account holder on the present master account, however, when on the phone, was told that their email would change and has been given this verbally.
Whilst on the phone, the parties concern enquired what would happen to other sub-accounts on the present master account (one of which is mine) and was informed that these would not be affected and continue to work as normal after the change.
It sounds to me however, that it is a NEW account that is being made rather than a change in master account (At least I assume this is the case as could be told by parties concerned that the first 3 months would be @ £20 + there’s the fact of the new email address which makes me think new account.)
However today (4th February), there has been a phone call from BT to confirm that the account was being taken over. Guy on the phone couldn’t say what would happen to the sub-accounts and said may have to contact customer services after the change. Emails regarding ‘joining’ BT have come to an already existing sub-account and apparently the new ‘billing’ account is going to a sub-account, making me now wonder is the sub account being promoted to a primary account?
Our fear is that come the 14th February (the day of the change) that we could be in limbo not knowing what happening!
What we would like to know is:
1. Is it true about the sub accounts? (No offence, but we really don’t think the guy on the other end of the phone really understood the situation!)
2. If not true, and it IS a new master account, is there any way that the sub accounts could be migrated to the new account (I’ve read here about people with TWO master accounts and having their accounts migrated but there is only going to be the ONE in our case) + is there a grace period before the emails would be de-activated (as you can appreciate, we’ve had the accounts for nearly 8 years and in my case, is the primary contact for some jobs I’ve applied for and this has came out of the blue!)
3. If accounts can’t be saved, what would happen to any flickr account associated with an address? Would this automatically change from a pro to a free?

How does someone from a remote PC login and gain access to a Mac with remote desktop with VNC without turning remote sharing on? So they can see what I see and can control my mouse from a PC?

without turning on screen sharing and with the remote user working from a windows pc, there is no way built into os x to do this. however if the remote user is using a mac you can use ichat's screen sharing feature.
otherwise, you can turn on screen sharing, find your ip address (google 'what is my ip address'), ensure the ports are open on your router and enable vnc users by entering a password in the advanced dialog.

How do I stop Itunes from taking over my desktop when restoring?

Yes itunes decided to restore my ipad after a back up yesterday. Hate it when Itunes loses track of where everything is stored and then screws up my ipad programs.
So restoring the ipad and itunes keeps jumping to the front while nicely informing me it will take an hour etc. Which makes doing anything else very very irritating such as typing this query out as it keeps shifting back to itunes screen.
Another issue when the smaller window is running there is NO way to just have the itunes window sitting in the task bar just beeps at me when trying to minimise the window. May want to add the option as I want to be able to do other things while waiting an HOUR plus to restore my ipad after itunes screwed the ipad up and not have itunes window pop up every few mins.
Yes none of the main window buttons in itunes top right hand corner work while a smaller windows is running in itunes. Which means no minimise windows or resize. Great way to take over my desktop space WHEN I DON'T WANT YOU TO!!!!!
Please suggest some fixes before I get irritated enough to lob my computer out the window with itunes on it or just uninstall itunes and get on with my life with ALOT less hassle then this. After all I just want a program to work without monthly wierdness like screwing up my ipad programs where tapping on them will not work AFTER a backup and having to do a restore AND while doing said restore itunes takes over my desktop regularly enough to make me scream at the computer!!! And then the computer beeps at me as I am now typing into the itunes windows which makes me frustrated even more!!!

Small correction for the Q10, when you keep those 3 keys down for a while, the Q10 shuts down but doesn't restart by itself.
You need to turn it back on with the top button.
All other BBs will flash the red light and restart.

I lost my apple tv 1st gen remote and was wondering if there was any type of bypass method to set up my iphone as the remote. I really hate to buy a new one so please let me know if you know anything!! "Media Busy" Maybe, maybe ur player innitializing the selected track ready to play it. Does it hang on Media busy for a long time?
Strange behaviour like this can be corrected with a reboot. Take battery out whilst your device is still switch ON. Wait 20 seconds or so, then re-inster your battery. Wait throught the reboot (about 5 mins). See if that helps. If not, sorry, cant help any further. A reboot fixes a lot of issues.

How do I switch remote desktops with lion server screen sharing?

When I sometimes use the Lion Server screen sharing feature to take over my iMac using my Macbook, I find that I'm not able to switch desktops on the remote computer, i.e. using the three finger swipe.
Both are running the latest versions of Lion Server.
Now there MUST be some way to do that right?

Hi John, perhaps I did not express myself clearly.
My desktop iMac is set up with multiple desktops (desktop 1 for system stuff, desktop 2 for mail, messages, skype etc, desktop 3 for Safari and desktop 4 for text proessing, VM-Ware and other work).
When I work on that machine I'm logged in as one user and use the three finger swipe left and right or the Cmd-1 thru Cmd-4 keys to switch between those desktops.
I haven't founf how to do that from my a remotely connected MacBook Pro.
Both of which are running Mountain Lion in the mean time. The iMac runs Mountain Lion Server and the MBP has ML Server installed as well, but nut implemented. Just to be able to use the remote screen...

Reinstalling Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.

Dashboard keeps taking over the screen

When I am working on new iMac in many different applications, all of a sudden the Dashboard screen pops up and displaces what I am working on.
I thought I was doing something wrong with the wireless mouse but it doesn't seem to be that.

Does this happen when you go to System Preferences > Mouse > More Gestures and uncheck all boxes?

If the phone is in recovery mode, the access to the data is already lost. See this support document to restore your phone. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
IF you did the update via iTunes, the first thing iTunes would have done was to create a backup. Check and if it did, then you can restore to that backup.
