How do I make a back up on Time Machine before upgrading to Mountain Lion?

A detailed process would be greatly appreciated. I've heard I should use time machine before upgrading to Mountain Lion for reasons I cannot remember.
Thanks!

Connect an external drive to your Mac. Open Disk Utility, it is in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder, and see if the external is formated Mac Extended (Journaled) and if it is not you can either use the Partition tab to Re-partition it as one partition and format it Mac Extended (Journaled) or you can use the Erase tab to Erase the drive and format it the Mac format. Name it anything you like.
Once that is done close Disk Utility and open System Preferences and go to the Time Machine Applet. Once that is open, If OS X doesn't ask you if you want to use that external as a TM backup disk, select "SelectBackup Disk" and select that external as a place to store backups. Then move the slider from Off to On and then TM will start the process of making a backup of your system. Once it is finished I suggest you turn it back off.

Even though the Mac OS X updaters are very smooth and rarely run into problems, it is always wise to make a clean, and bootable  backup before performing a major update.  When things go wrong they go wrong in the worst possible way

Time machine backup is "failed" and message reads:  The backup disk image "/volumes/data/lynnblake's MacBookPro sparsebundle" is already in use.

Shut down the computer then restart it.

I have recently converted to using Time Machine (vs. Chronosync) to backup files on my Macbook Pro.  I'm still using Chronosyn for my iMac, but may change to TimeMachine as well for simplicity sake.

  • How do i get files backed up in Time Machine onto a computer with 10.4?

So, i had to downgrade to 10.4 temporarily, will go back to 10.5 very soon, but right now, i have files that were deleted off of my computer, and backed up on time machine. I need a way of getting these files off of time Machine. I checked the time machine folder, the whole folder added up to 7gb, while some of the files i am looking for are 10gb.

You should be able to drag and drop them from the TM backup folder to your Tiger HD. You may have to enter the Admin name/pw combo.

  • Can I just make one back-up on time machine instead of making a new one every day/week?

I am just wondering if it is possible to make just one back up early instead of it making new ones every week/month/year? Any help would be awesome! Thanks.

As Barry asks -- why? You're on a MacMini, so you don't ned to disconnect for portability.
Time Machine copies only those files that have changed since the last backup.
By decreasing the interval, you save NO space, and reduce the effectiveness of the backup. If you need to go back to a previous version of a file, you've got fewer versions.
If you backup once a week, and lose a file created yesterday, you've got NOTHING.

  • Lost iPhoto. How do I get it back. The Time machine not far enough back

Installed iLife 11 so I could use the IDVD program. This may be coincidence, but I have lost the IPhoto program. The library seems intact, its the program itself. How do I get it back?

Go to the Mac App Store.
    Look on the Purchases page
See if there is a version of iPhoto for you there, waiting to be downloaded.

  • How do I restore a back up from Time machine ?

I recently used an app called App Clean and it seems to have removed some essential files !
I have been told I need to back my machine up and re-install the system software. How do I do this ? I was using Lion at the time
    Thanks

If you have been using TIME MACHINE all the time you may be in luck.  By backing up your system now and reinstalling your OS will not achieve the desired result!  Your backup will reflect what you now have on your HDD which does not have the missing files on it!
If you know where you missing data was located, open time machine and go back to that location, the date that you think you created the data (or later).  Theoretically it shoud be there and then you can restore it.
My experience with time machine has been mixed.  More often I succeed but there have been disappointments.

  • How do I delete old back ups in Time Machine?

  • How do I fix Time Machine from crashing in mountain lion

    Hi,
I recently had to wipe my SSD on my rMBP as I couldn't partition the drive in order to install Bootcamp. I managed to eventually erase the drive and setup a new partition for Windows. I then reinstalled Mountain Lion via the internet and hooked the computer up to my Time Capsual to do the restore. Restore did not restore to my latest backup and when I go to time machine to do a restore I am getting 2 things happen:
    1) Dates of retre points are all listed in Purple.
    2) Unable to select any of these dates as the software appears to freeze.
Anyone know why this is happening?
    Thanks

Another option to check your backups is through the Finder window.
Connect the external HD to Mac - or connect to the IP address where the HD is connected to (GO-Connect to Server).
-In the HD you will find the backups.backups folder - folder of your Mac - folders of each back up.

  • How to delete corrupted files backed up on Time Machine.

    Hi,
I'm using Fusion to run Windows XP Home. This morning I tried to open it and was told the file was corrupted and couldn't be used. I had to force quit both Fusion and Windows XP. Luckily I could go back a few days and use TM machine to restore an earlier version of Windows XP and now it's working perfectly again. I'd like to delete the corrupted file but I'm afraid I might delete something critical and I don't to delete all backups. Any suggestions?
    Thanks

    Welcome to the Apple boards:
If you did it correctly, the bad file is overwritten by the "new" one from TM.
If not, you should be able to find it and temporarily drag it to your desktop.
If nothing bad happens after a day or so, then trash the desktop windows file.
If you are looking to delete the bad file from TM, open TM and find the bad file and select it. Then select delete You will be prompted to delete only that file or all previous backups. Select only the one you have chosen.
Be sure TM has backed up your new Windows system before deleting it and there is little you can lose.
I would also like to compliment you on using TM and using it properly.
Were everyone as conscientious as you, most of the issues on the board would resolve themselves.
    Kudos.

  • How do I restore files backed up to time machine to a replacement storage drive? (NOT System disk)

I've seen plenty of articles about restoring the system disk (restoring the whole system) with Time Machine, but nothing about restoring a secondary disk that has crashed.
I've been doing backups of both the primary system disk and a secondary storage disk for 2 years. Yesterday, the secondary storage disk crashed. I have a replacement disk, now I need to restore the backup from Time Machine onto this new disk.
Can I just copy the files from the Time Machine disk to the new one, or do I need to do something more complicated? The instructions for restoring files from Time Machine all include selecting the drive/folder you want to restore, then entering Time Machine. But I can't do that if the original disk no longer exists.
I'm getting the replacement drive today, so I thought I would ask before I installed the drive. Any advice would be appreciated.

If i had a direct answer, i'd posted it, but, since I don't use TM, I linked you to the TM bible. You know, the one that Apple failed to provide.
BTW, specific steps on what you did to solve the problem will help others.
