How do I make a backup of an external disk?

I have an external disk that is formatted in Mac Extended Journal on which I keep movie files and photos.
I had some bad experiences in the past with my first MacBook Air (version 2.1) in which external drives kept getting erased without any good reason. I think it's due to the fact that I had to connect a USB cord to another computer when I had an external drive plugged into the MBA because the MBA could not power it on its own.
I thought it was due to a bad external drive and I took it to Samsung service center and complained that their drive was malfunctioning. I got a refund. But later on, I found that the same thing happened to another external drive and to a USB flash drive, so I realized that it had nothing to do with the external disks and something to do with the computer. I used the same drives that got erased on a newer MacBook Air (version 3.2) and I never had the sudden erasure problem.
Anyhow that's the background to why I want to make a clone of the external disks in my possession. If for some reason, the external disk gets suddenly erased, I would like a copy somewhere in safekeeping so that I do not lose all my movies.
How do I make a clone of an external disk?
I will be using a MacBook Air (3.2) for this task. It has two USB ports. Can I use Carbon Copy Cloner to do this? Just choose a source disk (external disk I want to clone) and a destination disk (the external disk where I want it to be cloned to)?

Many backup utilities like Carbon Copy Cloner and Super Duper can be used to clone drives.  They can also clone boot drive to make bootable clones.  They use "smart" backups in that they only update what has been changed from the previous backup.   That is what you need too since you intend to use USB which is not that fast.
With CCC you can set up a task to start the backup automatically when you plug the backup in and it mounts.
FWIW I use CCC to make daily backups of my disks (scheduled backups can be done by these utilities).

  • How can I make a backup to an external hard drive from iPhoto if it won't open?

how can I make a backup to an external hard drive from iPhoto if it won't open? I just wan't to make a backup to my pictures not my entire computer so how does Time Machine work on that?

you could also clone the drive or volume, or just some of the user folders. look for carbon copy cloner, then enable the "use checksum to insure file integrity."
you can have multiple iPhoto Library catalogues in different locations.
Continue to use TimeMachine and make sure it has 350% or more capacity than your system and data.

  • Time machine to make the backup of an external disk

    Hi community
I’m using time machine to make backups of my Mac as many people do, but now I’d like to know how can I use it to backup on a different time machine disk, the content of an external disk. don’t know if I’m clear enough, that’s a complex question and my english is what it is.
I will reformulate just in case. I have a 1Tb external disk that I want to backup from time to time. So the idea was to plug that disk on my MacbookPro, plug a 2Tb disk that I would use as backup or time machine disk (not the usual one that I’m using for backing up my Mac), and that the Mac will automatically backup one to the other.
right now I’m making security copies every 3 months just by copying the whole content of the first disk to the 2nd one, but it takes 24 hours to do it, and since the content to be copied, does not change a lot, I think that backup program will improve it quite a lot.
    thanks in advance.
    regards
PD: if you think of a more efficient way to do it not based on Apple’s Time Machine, I’m all ears specially if it’s simple and user friendly.

    Try a clone.
Clone  - Carbon Copy Cloner          (Often recommended as it has more features than some others)

How can I make a backup of my iWeb page? Is iWeb also disappearing on June 30?

Here are some Apple help sheets about backing up your files:

And I found this one written by an independant guy very thorough and helpful:

iWeb is not going away, but I would be skeptical about how much longer Apple keeps it around.

  • How can I make a backup from my Macbook Pro?

How can I make a backup from my Macbook Pro?

    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
         drive being backed up.
See Mac Basics- Time Machine. Please visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
      1. Cool Drives
      2. OWC
      3. WiebeTech
      4. Firewire Direct
      5. California Drives
      6. NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • How i can make a backup without separate hdd?

How i can make a backup without seperate hdd?

how i can partition the hd? please step by step...
    today it's my first apple-day ... i was 18 years windows user
While I agree with everyone else, get a second disk and backup to that disk, I will point you in the directory of partitioning.
Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility
Disk Utility may or may not be able to carve a new partition out of your existing partition, depending on whether the end of the current partition is unused so the current partition can be reduced in size and a new partition added.
It may be necessary to use an external disk, clone your internal disk using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner (both free to use when creating a full clone), then partition your internal disk, and finally restore the external clone to the internal disk again using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you do not want to get a 2nd disk, then consider using an on-line service such as CrashPlan, Carbonite, Mozy, etc... for the files you absolutely cannot aford to loose.

    Hi everybody :
I just purchased PhotoShop Elements 12 (Download).  How do I make a backup copy of this software ?  In the event of a System Crash.      I have a copy on my DeskTop and in my Startup Menu.

    Hi stanulg1952
You need not to make a copy .. In case your system crashes, you can download it again ....
Otherwise, You can write it on a optical Disc and use it in future ....But make sure you keep the Installation files on the disk, not the one which are there on your desktop after installtion

How do I make a backup when there are 4 users on my mac?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
If you have more than one user, the backup is just the same as if you have one user. All users are backed up and there isn't any difference between a backup made on a Mac with one user and on a Mac with multiple users. Then, if you want to restore that backup in the future, you will be able to select which users you want to restore

how do you make room on your start up disk.  i am trying to do the update but don't have enough space

    Try this:
    1. Open "Finder", then navigate to "Movies" on the left side. Click on "iMovie Projects"
    2. Move desired movies and clips to trash, or your flash drive.
*PS* Its dangerous to have a full hard drive, I would recommend either trashing, or transferring files to another computer. Trash applications you no longer use as well.

  • HT201364 how do i make space on my start up disk

How do I make space on my start up disk to allow for updates?

You should never, EVER let a conputer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your iMac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto, iPhoto has its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
Other things you can do to gain space.
Once you have around 15 GBs regained, do a search, download and install OmniDisk Sweeper.
This app will help you locate files that you can move/archive and/or delete from your system.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.
    Good Luck!
