How Do I: Make a bootable FW or USB drive which I can install from?

I was at our local Apple store yesterday after my wife's Macbook decided not to like the 10.5 install disk that came with it. It would make it to about 7% and then error-out and message us that we needed to clean the disk. Multiple times. So I brought it in and the nice Genius had a drive which had 10.4, 10.5 , Drive Genius and more on it. He was able to run Disk Utility from it as well as boot from it and install from it.
I have multiple drives floating around, too small to be of much use and log ago replaced with larger drives.
We have three Macs and two versions of OSX. This would be very nice rather than digging out the disks.
I know I can install to a FW or USB drive and boot from it, but how do I go about installing from an external drive?

Note that the restored HD partition version of the installer DVD will still be writable, unlike the DVD itself, which is inherently read only. This should not be a problem unless something either corrupts its files or adds something that interferes with the operation of the DVD version of the OS* (which is stripped down & contains some small differences in the component files it shares with the standard version).
For this reason, you should not mount the partition unless you need to use it and/or unmount it when not in use.
* By "the DVD version of the OS," I mean the OS that boots the Mac to run the installer, not the OS version it installs.

  • How do I make a bootable hard drive clone of my main disk in my mac pro?

    Hi everyone,
    How do I make a bootable hard drive clone of my main disk in my mac pro?
    My main drive has bad sectors and I want to replace it.
    Thanks in advance

    Also your  Mac's Disk Utility can make a bootable clone;
    http://macs.about.com/od/backupsarchives/ss/diskbackup.htm
    Consider though, if your internal HD is failing and defective, then any clone however made, may carry that defect.
    Perhaps it would be better to copy your personal data, photos emails etc, to an external drive as well, just in case the clone did not work because of the failing hard drive.

    Why can't you provide specific instructions here in HT203909 (Boot Camp: Creating an ISO image from a Windows installation DVD) about how to make the USB drive bootable?  The article referenced for partitioning the drive is not dedicated to Bootcamp--too long, too many options.  How do you make it bootable?

    If your BC Assistant shows the option to create a USB Installer, it automatically is marked as bootable. There is no need to have manual intervention to make a bootable USB. Once the process is manually modified, it is supported by the person modifying it.
    You have two or three options (depending on your Mac Model).
    1. Create USB... - Use a USB2 flash drive, which is erased and formatted. If your Mac supports ISOs then BCA will prompt for the Media. Any Mac which does not have a built-in Optical drive will support an ISO. There are specific Mac models which support both, DVD and USB based installation.
    2. Download Software from Apple servers...
    3. Install Windows...
    Are any additional instructions really necessary?

  • How to make linux bootable off a usb stick on mac

    Guys i was wondering how to make linux bootable off a usb stick on mac, since i dont have a optical drive in my mac, plus i need it for university

    I have the same question, but parsed differently.  What people have tried answering here is:
         how to (make linux (bootable off a usb stick on mac))
    What I'm trying to find is:
        how to make ((linux bootable off a usb stick) on mac)
    That is, I don't want to boot from the usb stick on my mac; I want to write an ISO to a usb stick that's plugged into my Macbook Pro (Mavericks), then carry the stick to a different machine (several discarded Windows boxes in fact), plug it in there, and watch it boot on that machine.  I've done a bit of googling, but everything I find talks about making USB drives with content that can be booted on a Mac.  What I'm wondering is if it's possible to write to use my Mac to write bootable USB gadgets that work on other machines that aren't running OSX software.
    Anyone know if this is discussed anywhere?  If not, what's the right forum to ask it on?  And how do I ask it so that I don't get yet another explanation of how to make something that will boot on my Mac?
    I have several linux ISOs waiting.  Actually, I could do the job on one of several available linux boxes.  But I'd like to do it on my portable laptop, which at the moment is this Macbook Pro.

  • How do i make a bootable cloned hard drive

    How do i make a bootable hdd ie cloned hdd just incase my macbook pro hdd every crashed

    Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    Check the box labeled Erase destination.
    Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the external backup drive. Source means the internal startup drive.

  • This is probably a dumb question, but I can't find an answer. How do I make the text on my calendar larger so I can actually read it when I print it out?

    This is probably a dumb question, but I can't find an answer. How do I make the text on my calendar larger so I can actually read it when I print it out? I am using a MacBook.

    Press "Command P" and when the Print dialogue box comes up, towards the bottom there is an option allowing you to choose the text size, i.e: small, med, large.
    Hope this helps,

  • How would I make it so that when "deleting" an image I can make it so that the delete key does it or a button I put on the application?

    How would I make it so that when "deleting" an image I can make it so that the delete key does it or a button I put on the application?
    I want it so that I can use either a button on the designer window or the delete key. I know how to do the or part but the trouble I'm having is coding the button in.
    if (LastImageClicked != null && (e.Key == Key.Delete || Button))
    This is the code that I have in the format I'm looking for I just don't know how to do it. Thanks for your help!

    There are a number of things which are unclear about your question.
    I'll tell you one way to approach this though.
    Handle Window.PreviewKeyDown.
    <Window
    Window.PreviewKeyDown="Mainwindow_PreviewKeyDown"
    Code behind
    private void Mainwindow_PreviewKeyDown(object sender, KeyEventArgs e)
    if (e.Key == Key.Delete)
    File.Delete("p001.jpg");
    I don't know enough about what you mean by LastImageClicked  but you need some way of knowing which path you are going to delete.
    Then you might well have a problem if it's showing in an image control.
    You will need to copy the picture off disk into a new bitmapimage object.
    If you just do
    <Image Source="p001.jpg"
    Then that image will grab the file and you won't be able to delete it - you'll  get an error.
    In my experimental code p001.jpg is set as content copy always so it ends up next to the exe in the bin when the solution compiles.
    You would probably want a full path to a file there.
    Hope that helps.

  • How do i make a clone to an external drive w/o erasing data

    I have a 500gb external firewire that i want to make a clone too.
    how do i use carbon copy cloner or super duper ( i have both..which one is better) to make a clone to the external without erasing the data already on the drive?
    i want to make a clone before i delete a partition on my main drive so i can install bootcamp on it. (i guess u can only use bootcamp assistant if your main drive is only one partition)

    You can't. either of the programs will erase the drive it is cloning to. If you have enough space you can create an extra partition on your external (this can be done without erasing any data) and clone your internal to the empty partition. both CCCloner and superduper! are great programs and you can use either one.

  • How do I create more room on my MacBook Pro so I can install Snow Leopard?  It says it needs 5GB and I have 4.something.

    How do I create more room on my MacBook Pro so I can install Snow Leopard?
    I've only got 4.something GB left and it says it needs 5 GB?
    Which then begs the question, will I be able to do anything with the computer.
    I think I need to get some stuff off, but do not know where to look up what is taking up the most room.
    I have an extra hard drive.
    I have iDisk.
    I have a Time Machine, but it backs up one of my three Macs.
    Thanks.

    A utility like GrandPerspective is a good one for seeing what is taking up space on your hard drive.
    Video and photo files tend to take up a lot of room.

  • I need to know how to disable my apps on my old system so that I can install them on new computer.

    I've just purchased a new iMac and need to know how to disable my apps on my old system so that I can install them on the new one.

    You are allowed to have two working installations so you do not have to disable the original if you prefer to have a backup.  Otherwise, to disable you can just sign out thru the CC manager.

  • How do I perform maintenance  on my iMac SSD Drive so I can extend it's life

    I recently purchased a Mid 2011 27" 3.4GHZ i7 /16GB Memory iMac and would like to know how do I perform maintenance  on my iMac SSD Drive so I can extend it's life, Does apple now support Trimm or is there some thing else I need to do? Defrag?  I do not store anything thing but OS and APPS on the drive
    thanks

    There is nothing you need to do to the SSD. Do not attempt to defrag an SSD as there is no need and uses the device excessively. TRIM is supported only if the SSD is an Apple device so if you reformat the SSD there's no need to Zero Data for garbage collection.
