How do I make a bootable hard drive clone of my main disk in my mac pro?

Hi everyone,
How do I make a bootable hard drive clone of my main disk in my mac pro?
My main drive has bad sectors and I want to replace it.
Thanks in advance

Also your  Mac's Disk Utility can make a bootable clone;
http://macs.about.com/od/backupsarchives/ss/diskbackup.htm
Consider though, if your internal HD is failing and defective, then any clone however made, may carry that defect.
Perhaps it would be better to copy your personal data, photos emails etc, to an external drive as well, just in case the clone did not work because of the failing hard drive.

  • How to make a bootable hard drive

I will be purchasing an external hard drive for my G5 for extra storage. Is it possible to make the second hard drive bootable without actually installing OS X on it? Is there a way to just install a system folder? Or can I just copy the OS X installer to that drive?
I just want to be able to boot so I can run Disk Utility on the main drive when needed without having to use the startup DVD.

Hello! You can also follow Kappy's suggestion below. Tom
Kappy's step by step guide to ext cloning.
This requires two steps and the external drive must be a Firewire drive:
    Prep external FW drive:
    1. Open Disk Utility from your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    4. Drag the startup or source volume to the Source entry field.
    5. Select the backup or destination volume from the leftside list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Check the box to Erase Destination. Skip this step if you've already formatted the drive.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.

  • How do I create a bootable hard drive partition?

    Hello,
Would someone out there be kind enough to give me step by step instructions for creating a partition on my external hard drive that I could use to boot my computer in the event of an emergency? I understand how to use Backup for my files, but I want to know how to make the hard drive bootable, as well.
    Thanks!
    Eli Garfinkel

When you say step by step I'm guessing you're saying you are a little inexpierenced so I'm going to give it to you very thoroughly.
First: If you are not using this external HD for anything else then there is no need to partition and you should skip to "Making Bootable Clone"
    "Making the Partition":
    1) Plug in the external HD.
    2) Launch Disk Utility
    3) Click on the ext. HD in the left hand column
    4) Click on the Partitions tab.
    5) Create the number of partitions by clicking the dropped down menu under "Volume Scheme"
5a) The partition that will be the bootable one should be as big as the internal HD.
    6) Format it as Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)
    7) Check the Mac OS 9 Drivers...just in case.
    8) Click the Partition button in the bottom right and let DU do its work.
    "Making Bootable Clone"
-I highly recommend you buy the $27.95 copy a SuperDuper! (shirtpocket.com)
-It will allow for easy incremental backups, which can be done each day, that will keep you up-to-date.
    1) Once you've downloaded SuperDuper! & have the disk partitioned open SuperDuper!
    2) In the "Copy" box select your internal HD.
    3) In the "to" box select the partition.
    4) Make sure "using" says "backup-all files"
    5) Select "Options" button and under the "During Copy" make chose the first option. This erases the partition and then copies the internal onto the external.
-After this is completed you can continue to do this, daily. The only difference is you'll have to change the "During Copy" in the "Options" button to the second option. This is the "Smart Update".
-A Smart Update will delete or create files on the ext. HD so it mirrors the internal. The results is the ext. HD is exactly like the internal and it only takes 10-15min. You ext. HD will always be up to date then. You can run this every night.
-This will result in an exact clone and you can boot form this partition if you ever need to.

  • How to make a boot hard drive clone

I would like to make a clone of my 09 Mac Pro Quad 2.93, Snow Leopard boot hard drive. The idea is to install and boot from the clone in the event of a boot drive failure. Can this be done?

You can put the clone on any drive that you find suitable. If you use an internal drive it may be convenient to use backup software to update your clone so it remains a duplicate of your startup drive. This has the added benefit of acting as a backup. Suitable backup software might be:
    Backup Software Recommendations
    Carbon Copy Cloner
    Data Backup
    Deja Vu
    SuperDuper!
    Synk Pro
    Tri-Backup
Others may be found at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.

  • How can i make my external hard drive be the scratch disk with 1 FW input?!

Hello! I use firewire with my external HD AND my camera...however i only have one firewire input...i set my scratch disk for final cut to work with my external HD but when i am importing footage to my computer with my camcorder, i can not have my external HD plugged in, thus the scratch disk has to be set to something else to continue working. So how can i work around this problem?! Should i just change the settings back after i import the footage and it all goes to place?

I don't understand the need to daisy chain. I have one Firewire port on my MacBook Pro, and I use a Firewire hub. I've been connecting two 1TB Western Digital My Book Studio Edition hard drives (one for FCE and iMovie projects; one for the media files I create via export), and a Canon NTSC ZR200 miniDV tape camcorder, or a Sony Digital8 tape camcorder, or sometimes a Canopus ADVC 110, without issues. Why not use a Firewire hub? . . . except to save the small expense.

  • How can I make the external hard drive my default to save everything on it?

    Hi everyone,
I have a new Macbook with retina but I had to buy the one with lower Flash Disk space and faster processor,
but when I realized that I could buy external hard drives I bought one, so I was wondering if I could change the default Flash Drive to the external one so apps and all my files, music and content save in this one instead of the one inside the mac
    thank you for your time

    what does SSD mean???
SSD is the internal flash memory.
Use SuperDuper! or Carbon Copy Cloner to "clone" (exact copy) the SSD to the external.
Then go to System Preferences > Startup Disk and select the external HD as the startup disk.

  • How do I make an external hard drive available to all users?

    Hi,
I have the following situation. I have an external hard drive that is conected to Airport Extreme. I have a MacBook Pro with 2 users and would like to make this drive availble to both. For user A, I went into Login Items and added the drive as a Volume. When I log in as user A, the drive is auto mounted with no problems. However, if I switch to user B, the drive has already been mounted under /Volumes/Elements with permissions for user A, so obviously user B can't access it, nor is it possible for this user to try and mount it. Is there a way to auto mount the drive so that its availble to both users?

You're trying to use the drive as a server but as "ds store" implied, it's not a server nor is it a NAS drive, so it cannot handle more than one user at a time. You might be able to do what you want if you install Mac OS X server software on it, but I can't be sure of this as I've never used that software. I understand that the Lion version is supposed to be fairly easy to configure.

  • How do I make an internal hard drive not mount at startup?

I have an internal hard drive hooked to an ACARD ATA RAID controller that I use for backup purposes, and I would like to mount and unmount it manually. Disk Utility in OS9 and earlier had an option not to mount a disk at startup, but I see no such option in OS X.
I can manually unmount the drive in Disk Utility, but it always comes back up when I reboot. How can I keep the drive from mounting upon reboot?

I discovered this in a quick internet search.
    http://www.macseven.com/files/20070719how_to_prevent_a_drive_volume_frommounting.html
Please note that I have never personally done this and am not recommending it. But maybe it will give you some guidance.

  • How can I make my external hard drive writable?

I have a 60GB external hard drive (half used, so got about 20 free GBs on it)
It is writable by Windows and Linux, but is "read only" on Mac.
Is there a way I can partition part of it to be writable with Mac?

    So FAT32 then?
Ok, so in the future if I ever buy a new external hard drive, I should format it right away to FAT32... that's good to know
I was thinking of buying a 500GB drive, so maybe I'll wait (rather than partition the 60GB one) and format it to FAT32.
When I got the 60GB, it came already formatted as NTFS.

  • How do I make my external hard drive show up in devices even when the external discs box is checked in preferences?

External hard drive not showing up in devices, even after troubleshooting and checked in preferences.

  • How do I access an external hard drive that shows up in Disk Utility but will not show up in finder or on my desktop?

I have an external hard drive that just stopped showing up one day. Is there a solution to this problem that allows me to secure the data on the drive before reformatting?

I'm having the same problem bpay14, but with a CalDigit VR2 6TB RAID0 external hard drive.
One day it was showing on my desktop, the other it wasn't. And I still didn't update my Mavericks to 10.9.3 (still with the 10.9.2).
It shows up in the disk utility, and I can even Verify the disk and Repair it (but I don't wanna start repairing
something that probably doesn't need to be repaired, so I haven't clicked the Repaid button, only the Verify button) and it says its working just fine.
But it doesn't show in the Finder or the desktop for that matter.
And even if I force disconnect the cable, I get the usual "this disk was not ejected properly" notification
presumingly the disk was mounted on the desktop and I forced eject by unppluging it...
I found a way to force open the disk, through Disk Utility that's by clicking with the right mouse button
on the disk icon, and chosing OPEN "CalDigit AFRICA 6TB"... (see picture 1)
But... after that, it open a Finder window showing all my internal and external drives, but that drive's
name is in washed grey, like if it was unmounted (see picture 2).
When selected, I can see everything and work normally on the harddrive, even opening FCPROX projects or Libraries, copying from it and writing documents into it... just normal... (see picture 3)
BUT IT DOES NOT SHOW IN THE DESKTOP...
    that's my problem...
I even did a Command+i for Info on the hard drive. (see picture 4)
Can anyone shed some light on this issue?
    I would be eternally grateful!
    Thanks in advance!!!
    Cheers!

  • Any need to partition hard drives for FCS or CS4 on my new Mac Pro?

This is my first post here but have learned a lot recently just by visiting various threads. I'm new to Mac and Final Cut Studio so I have a few questions about setting up the system and hard drives. I've read about partitions on hard drives on various sites but I wonder if that is outdated advice at this point. I will be learning FCS and CS4 by working on various SD DV and HDV/AVCHD projects so I want my system flexible but as high performance as I can muster. I will be working mostly in FCP and AfterEffects for a while and do intend to burn blu-ray discs eventually.
My system is a current Mac Pro quad core with 8gb RAM with current versions of final cut and adobe suites. I will do a clean install with snow leopard. I have a 640gb main drive and I've purchased three 1tb Western Digital black internal drives. I am wondering if I need to partition my main drive because I may want to also run a windows OS eventually for blu-ray playback. The other 3 drives are intended for project files, media/capture and back-up respectively. I don't have the budget for a RAID at the moment. So my questions for this thread are:
    1. Do I need to partition the main drive now or should I wait until I need to do so with boot camp/windows installation later?
    2. If I should partition main drive now, how much should I dedicate for the second partition on the OS drive for eventual windows 7/blu-ray playback?
    3. Should I partition any of the three additional drives?
    4. If I should partition any of those additional drives, how many partitions should I make and what sizes should the partitions be for each drive?
    5. Is my plan for my four drives a sound one for my purposes? (os, projects, media, backup)
Thanks in advance for any help.

    Hi, and welcome.
    1. Don't partition your system drive until you need to. If you choose to run Windows via Bootcamp, you'll have to, in which case, 150GB will be plenty if all you want to do is playback (may even be overkill). However, you can probably do just as well running Windows under Parallels or VMWare, whch would be my recommendation. Performance is very good, and the ease of moving from OSX to Win makes them very convenient. Parallels (which I know better) automatically resizes the amount of space it needs to meet your usage. You can also run your Parallels virtual machine from somewhere other than your system disk. I imagine VMWare provides similar features. Both are well thought of.
    2. Your disk use plan is OK, with one caveat - if what you're working on is critical to you, you should also have an external backup. With backup on an internal drive, there's a (very small, but definite) risk that, if the Mac Pro hit a disaster, your backup would be lost. I'd suggest an external Firewire 800 or eSATA enclosure and, either another drive, or just use one of the WDs there instead of internally.
    3. Don't partition the other disks either. Just make sure they're formatted MAC OS Journaled (do this via Disk Utility). Another benefit of Parallels/VMWare is they allow Windows to read/write Mac formatted disks.
    Hope that helps

  • How can i make an external Hard drive default for iphoto

I have maxed out my memory on my MacBook with iPhoto 09.  I have been trying to export photos to an external HD and then make the external HD my default drive for future photo downloads from my camera.  Also, I need to clean off space on the internal HD, but not sure of the safest way to do this and make sure I don't loose any photos.  Any tips to move forward?  I am a Mac novice to say the least.
    Thanks

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
    Regards

  • How can I install after a hard drive failure with only upgrade disk?

I've been using Photoshop since 1998 but my HDD recently suffered a complete failure and I've had to change the drive. Unfortunately, I don't have my original Photoshop disk, only a CS2 and CS5 upgrade disk (with both serial numbers). Is there any way round this problem? Many thanks in advance for any replies.

    Welcome to the forum.
My upgrade path started with Ps version 2.5. That was the last full version, that I had. All the rest were upgrades from there, though to CS 2.
When I went to install CS 2, I was asked for the CS version. I had both the upgrade disc and the S/N (my S/N's went through a couple of iterations, over the decades). In my case, the CS version disc was inserted, found and the installation went smoothly.
Now, while I have CS 5 (and 5.5 and 6), I never installed CS 5, it was just part of the upgrade path, to get me to CS 6 at the end. With my CS 5 S/N, CS 6 installed fine.
That was what worked for me, and I hope will work for you too. Keep that CS 2 disc handy, as you might need to insert that into the multi-drive, at a point in the CS 5 installation.
The one worry that I would have, with an HDD failure, would be Activation, as you probably did not Deactivate Ps, before that failure. For that, should you be up against your allowed Activations, you will likely want to call Adobe Customer Support, and explain your problem. They should be able to reset the Activations, and help you.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
