How do I make a complete backup of my system?

hi all,
everytime I try to do a full backup using any tool I get some persmission denied errors, even using sudo. What I want to have is a full backup of my arch laptop so that when I mess it up or something like that, I can recover the ENTIRE system, not just the home folder or certain directories.
What is the best tool for doing this?
I have access to a server at work with a lot of storage space (1 TB) so the best way would something remote, I have tried rsync but either I don't know how to use it or doesn't work to do full systems backup (only folders).
Also, which folders should I exclude? I know I have to exclude /proc and /tmp, but some people also say to exclude /dev and /var/log so I am a little confused.
Thanks for the help!

I have used Larch to create a boo-table image of my system and put it on disk. I would read around that. It's basically a build system, you make a directory on your machine and build the framework for another basic Arch system and define what extra packages you want and some of the repository settings etc. Then you create that install and make an overlay, which is any files you want, like your home folder on your system, as well as files from /etc/ like rc.conf, to make sure your system is not only downloaded the packages, but also configured to use everything right, like in the daemons array, or group and sudo settings and such. Then this is turned into and .iso which can be burned to CD or DVD, and then booted live, and even installed, at a later date. As well as building a system in this way, you can have it work on your current active system.
My only criticism of the system is that it takes up quite a bit of memory to copy files over to the overlay and basically create another Arch install inside a directory, which then gets used to generate the .iso and put on a disk. So I keep deleting the overlays and duplicated files to free up memory again. But if you have plenty of space, just leave it and it's faster in the future.
Most of the scripts are command line, that do all this, and it can take a bit of reading to understand how this process of building a live system works and it's a bit heavy at first, but there is also a GUI available with tabs and such to guide you through the process.
I use it all the time and think it's brilliant.
Cheers,
Ben.
[EDIT] If you had access to your server you might be able build the Arch System Directory to be "Larch-ifyed" (which you would make as close as possible to your running system) on that, and then generate the .iso and hold it there too, as well as on disk, so you could have remote access to the backup .iso from numerous locations.

  • How do I make a complete backup of iTunes before removing iTunes software?

    Hi!
I am not able to update my iTunes software. If I try to download only the new files and install them manually, it does not work.
Apple Support sent me a dead link, so that was not helpful.
I think I have to remove the iTunes software, and then try to install the new iTunes software.
How do I make sure that my music, apps, books, videos, podcasts, iPhone backup etc are backed up and able to reinstall when I have installed the new software?
    Anyone?
    Dag Tore

I found the solution to my problem by reading some of the discussions.
I was m\not able to automatically or manually updating my iTunes software.
By doing this I solved my problem:
    Access Control Panel
    Select Programs
    Select iTunes
    Hit Repair
This solved my problems, and iTunes was updated..

How can I force Time Machine to make a complete backup of my Hard Drive.  I just installed a new external drive for Backup since my previous one failed.  Now when I back up, Time Machine only backs up my data folder and the Users folder.
When I start a backup. Time Machine says "Oldest Backup: None; Latest Backup: None", so it seems like it should do a complete backup, but it only does a partial.

Hi I'd like to jump in here. Your app showed me this:
    Time Machine:
              Skip System Files: NO
              Mobile backups: OFF
              Auto backup: YES
              Volumes being backed up:
Macintosh HD: Disk size: 749.3 GB Disk used: 453.81 GB
              Destinations:
                        Plastic Wrapper [Local] (Last used)
                        Total size: 999.86 GB
                        Total number of backups: 64
                        Oldest backup: 2013-07-24 23:25:11 +0000
                        Last backup: 2013-11-17 01:40:47 +0000
Size of backup disk: Too small
                                  Backup size 999.86 GB < (Disk used 453.81 GB X 3)
Time Machine details may not be accurate.
All volumes being backed up may not be listed.
              /sbin excluded from backup!
              /usr excluded from backup!
              /System excluded from backup!
              /bin excluded from backup!
              /private excluded from backup!
              /Library excluded from backup!
              /Applications excluded from backup!
Aside from the size of my backup drive, which I will increase at some point, I'd really like to have time machine backing up all system folders, especially Applications. How to I reset this hidden exclusions?
    Thanks,
    Darcy

  • Time machine makes new complete backup sometimes

Anyone knows why Time Machine sometimes makes a complete backup (even if no files have changed)? I'm backing up to a Time Capsule via wifi.

    See:
See User Tips for Time Machine for help with TM problems. Also you can select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "time machine" to locate articles on how to use TM. See also Mac 101- Time Machine.

  • I have a L355 Satellite laptop. How do I do a complete backup of the PC?

I want to do a complete backup of my system before I start side grading to Vista and XP.  I have copied the files, but I didn't know if that was enough.

It would be helpful if you defined more specific
    what files you copied.
What you want is maybe copy the entire C: Drive, if
that's what you mean entire system.
Did you use the tool that Windows offers or
a third party software or jus dragged and drop
the files on to an external media?

    Hi jenette,
If you are having issues using an HDTV via HDMI as an external display to your MacBook Air, you may find the following article helpful:

(Note: You will generally only see the arrangement option in Displays when you are configured to use the external display in Extended Desktop mode; there is no arrangement in Mirroring as both screens are showing the same image.)

  • How do I make a new backup file of my current library?

I just finished locating all my music in my C drive (manually & individually!) since 7.7 wiped out my library and I would like to make a completely new backup file location of this library so that all my music is in one location (just in case, for next time). For some reason my music was in like 3 different iTunes music files and it was quite a nightmare switching back and forth.
Is there an easy way to do this? And can I set up iTunes to now automatically backup new music to this new location?
    Thanks

    Nothing automatic within iTunes.
I use a backup program to copy entire itunes folder to another drive. No compression, archiving, or renaming; just a straight copy. Granted, this uses up twice as much space but I feel safer than about being able to get accidentally deleted files back.

  • HT1766 How can I make a NEW backup WITHOUT getting prompted for a (forgotten) password?

    Hello! 1st post here,
How can I backup iPhone A to iTunes and then restore into iPhone B without getting prompted for a backup password that I do no know or remember ever setting?
To clarify, I am not trying to read an encrypted backup. I would like to make a NEW backup but I do not want it to be encrypted as I do not know nor remember how a password was set in the 1st place. If I unclick the encryption checkbox, I am prompted to enter the password. Defeats the purpose of clicking on the box, no?
    Thanks,
    Henry

Have you tried deleting the encrypted back up?

  • How can i make my iphone backup run on the "D" drive instead of "C" drive ??

hi there, can someone tell me how to run the iphone backup on the "D" drive instead of the "C" drive??

The following quotation is from http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4946
I don't know enough about Windows to know if/how you can change where all or part of a \Users\(username)\ directory is located but you may be able to find it on the Microsoft Community: http://answers.microsoft.com
Where are iTunes backups stored on your computer
The folder where your backup data is stored depends on your computer's operating system. Make sure the backup folder is included in your data-backup routine. iTunes places the backup files in these places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
The "~" represents your Home folder. If you don't see Library in your Home folder, hold Option and click the Go menu.
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
To quickly access the Application Data folder, click Start, and choose Run. Type %appdata% and click OK.
    Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
To quickly access the AppData folder, click Start. In the search bar, type %appdata% and press Return.

I believe you will need a USB drive and can download and  install something called Lion Recovery Disk Assistant from below.

Also read the article from below which I believe will encourage your desire to do the backup.

  • How to make a complete backup file for Itunes?

Hi I have a set of "FILES" that make up an old phone back-up that isn't currently working as far as Itunes not recognizing it as a back up at all. What are my options as far as making them compatible?

If iTunes doesn't recognize a set of iOS device backup folders as valid then the chances of rescuing any data from them are slim. There are various iOS device backup extraction tools that may or may not do something useful, I've not had reason to test them.

  • How do I get a complete backup of my iPhone?

I am sure that somewhere this is answered completely...i just havent found it yet.
I plugged my phone into iTunes, did a sync and backup, then restored my phone to original state, then tried to install everything from a backup.
All of my apps are missing.
    Did I do something wrong?
I need clear instructions...an explanation of the difference between a sync and a backup, and how do I completely wipe a device then reinstall exactly what i had.
    TY in advance..

how to backup http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766  note: music and apps aren't part of the backup, only the app data is.  You can go to the appstore on your phone - purchased - download - all or not on this phone - then click on the cloud to redownload your apps.

  • How Do I Make a Complete Search Of My Mac

I have a new iMac with the latest version of Yosemeti.  I am in the process of transferring every thing from my old MacPro to my new iMac.  I occasionally need to make searches of my iMac (particularly including the Library folders) to ensure something is present.  How do I do that?

Not sure if this will help but Finder Search in Yosemite works slightly differently from that in my Snow Leopard which if not done right ends up displaying a blank.
First off make sure you have highlighted the area you wish to search in the side bar, it normally defaults to your Home folder so for system you need to highlight "Macintosh HD". Enter the file or fold name you wish to search for in the Search Box, this should give you a drop-down showing the same name - select it. Next click "+" to show two more options, for "kind" click and at the bottom chose "system files" and then next to it change "aren't include" to "are included". If you don't have "system files" as an option chose "other" and scroll the attribute list and tick it - select ok and you should then have it available.
If all went well you should see your file/folder name displayed in the window, click on it will the show its path along the bottom so you can navigate to its location.
Have seen various reports that Finder Search can be broken by updates and re-indexing may help but try the above remembering to select search location first in the side bar.

  • How do I make sure my backup module is empty?

I would like to sell an old backup module for the Visor. I'm about 95% sure I've never used it, but that 5% is bothering me. How can I see if anything is on it? If there is, how can I delete it? I inserted it into my old Visor and got the "back up now" screen. I figure that means it's working but don't know if it necessarily means it's empty. Also, the instructions say "using a backup module with a particular Handspring will associate that module with that handheld. If you subsequently choose to use the module with a different handheld, you will get a warning message". Does that mean if I test it on my old Visor it's useless to sell because it won't work with anyone else's Visor? Thanks in advance!
