How do I make a gradient follow a path?

I need to have a regular (linear) gradient but instead of going along a straight line, it should go along a custom made, freehand bezier path, observing all the turns or angles on that path.
Is it possible in PS?
Thanks.

Add a new layer, with a Gradient Map adjustment layer just above it, and make them a clipping group. Set your foreground/background colors to the default Black/White. In the Brush panel, set the "Foreground/Background Jitter" control to "Fade". Activate your path, and stroke it.Undo/Redo, changing the value under fade until you get the fade to be the whole length of the path.

How can I make Spotlight show the file path in the Spotlight menu for selected file?

Via Finder certainly, but not in the menu. You can view the file path in the Spotlight search results display by pressing the ⌘ key (while hovering over a file in the results), though. The path will display at the bottom of the Quick Look output, or cycle through that location.

• How to make a gradient on two paths

Hello,
I am fairly new to Illustrator, although have used Photoshop, Fireworks and DW to some degree in the past.
In CS4, I am trying to make a country map with different counties or states. Using the map of the UK and including Wales, Scotland, and some of the counties as an example. I need to portray the whole country, but only highlight a specific part of the land, along a train line and so quickly fade away to almost transparent in the further edges.
Using the pen tool I have traced the country and county borders as paths. I then used the fill tool to make each country, or sea, a different colour. Now I want to fade the edges of my map away to transparent to bring attention to the middle. I have drawn another path on top and beyond the edge of the artwork and tried to make a transparency overlay and gradient in this path to make it fade to the edges. However, this does not work as I had hoped for three reasons.
1) the darkest edge of my 'fade path' does not blend into the country below but is quite an obvious line.
2) the gradient is a different colour as it sits on top of other paths of different colours.
3) the gradient is linear, from top to north, of radial, from a certain spot. I need the gradient to flow out in all directions from a un-uniform 'blob' roughly in the middle.
Can you please tell me how I can achieve my aim?
3) I had one more query when tracing my map ... I have two shapes and the paths align along one edge, think of the south border of Scotland, and the north border of England for example. At the moment I have these two paths running alongside each other but not joined. So if I didn't draw my pen accurately, there are small pockets where they don't touch. Ideally I would like to borrow the other path line for a time then leave it as it continues on it's own route.
Sorry if I mixed up the terms, I hope you can understand me.
Hope you can advise which tools I should be using, or some tutorials I can follow?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks Mylenium. I've certainly learnt something from both replies. I have now finished tracing the countries using your paste and cut method. It was quite a tedious job! I also found using the lasso tool and direct selecion tool that I could highlight just the area that bordered the next county/country. My the latter stages I had to select multiples, join them and then add, delete more anchor points. I'm sure there must be an easier way to trace an image!
I tried the live trace, but the map I was using was too detailed it traced geography and not the borders. Anyway, I'm there now. Thanks for the advice.
I think I'm on the wrong track with the 'blob'. I didn't mean the blob tool on AI, but was referring to the middle content of my map following the railway line, which is the bit I wanted to 'stand out' from the rest. I have perservered and think I'm getting somewhere with the gradients.
Thanks also Skullmaster for the idea of gradient. It wasn't working how I need, but from your link I found how to make a 'transparent opacity mask' which I have used with a photo in the background to some effect.
It is a feature rich software and hard to know what to look for when I'm not sure of the terms. Unfortunately I have a deadline for what I'm doing and this map is only a small part of it. It will have to remain a work in progress as I slowly learn more techniques.
I'm sure I'll be back with more ...

• How can I make a gradient like this? (Edge between colors is hard, and bends)

I'm using Illustrator CS5
Looking to make a gradient similar to the one in the "BubbleBoddy" font here -
What's the smartest way to go about doing this? I have a basic understanding of gradients, but I have no idea how to get the gradient line to bend like that, or how to get such a "hard edge" between the light and dark pink.
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you!

draw a curve, copy it, colour it, blend 'em (alt + ctrl + B or Object > Blend > Make
then use your text as a mask.

• How do you make a gradient title larger

Hi All,
Not been using iMovie for too long so apologies if this is a really easy answer, I have searched the web but cannot find the right response.
Basically, I have added some white gradient titles to a few movies and in some cases the 'subtitle' text is too long and doesnt fit on one line, even when the text size is smaller. To combat this I used a carriage return to force some text onto a second line, but the gradient background doesnt enlarge with it, meaning the text continues below the gradient.
All I want to do is make the gradient white bos slighlty deeper to cover all the text ... 1 title and 2 lines of subititle. Surely that is possible?
Chris

in short: you can't
those title are, behind the scenes, 'generated', no graphic.
And those generators are limited. In other words:
come as is.
What you can do:
create your own titles!
Read my advice in my user tip here
>>click>> How to create a pointer or a custom title
For your needs:
In any paint-app (my preferred one: Pixelmator, avail in the AppStore) create a graphic, 16:9 aspect ratio, 'empty' background (=shown as checkerboard here), add a gradient, add titles, export as PNG to keep transparencies.
Added to the iMovie Project as 'pic in pic' resize - done.

• How do you make background gradient?

Hey all,
How would you make the background color a gradient effect,
such as black at the top fading toward gray at the bottom?
And also, on top of that, how would you make a rectangular
main area as your website-content area? It would almost fill the
page, but not quite- so the leftover width would be the gradient
background. The rectangular area would have a background of all
black.
Thanks!

Unless you are using an Adjustment Layer Gradient
Right idea, slightly wrong terminology. It's actually a Fill Layer on which you can make a gradient, then edit its characteristics.
Once you have such a Fill Layer created, you can edit it by double clicking the gradient icon in the Layers panel, and you can move its position by unchecking "Align with layer" then moving the center by dragging it while the Gradient Fill dialog is still open:

• How can I make the mouse follow as I point?

I am brand new to captivate and incredibly frustrated. I'm
trying to record a web site walkthrough and have selected
"Demostration." No matter what setting I change, the mouse only
moves when I click, but I want to point to things as I narrate. Can
anyone help me understand how to make that happen?

Welcome to our community, murphisto
Captivate doesn't exactly work in this manner. Basically here
is how the process works. You open an application. You open
Captivate and configure it to record the application. There are
different ways to record. You elected Demonstration. When recording
in Demonstration mode, the following happens.
Where you click or type, Captivate captures the screen. The
screen capture becomes the background image for the slide. The
mouse coordinates are tracked. In other words, where it started and
where it stopped. So each slide has a single mouse movement. On the
first slide where mouse movement was recorded, you may adjust the
start and end spots. But each slide afterwards only offers you the
ability to adjust the mouse ending spot. The starting spot is
determined by where it STOPPED on the slide before.
You may wish to investigate using Full Motion Recording
(FMR). But if you choose to go that route, you need to be aware of
some factors. Captivate was never designed to be a Full Motion
product. It's better than it used to be, but far from perfect. If
you do record in full motion, keep it very brief. Just a few
minutes worth. If you find this method of recording and playback
are what you feel are best, you will find yourself constantly
frustrated with Captivate. In that case, you should investigate a
different product that was designed with full motion in mind.
Camtasia Studio, Fraps or one of the others.

• How do you make a gradient background on a button in flex 4

Hey everyone, this is driving me crazy. Below is my css for a button in file. I want a gradient background on a button in flex 4. I can not for the life of me figure out how to do this. There is no longer the backgroundColors option. chromeColor is only a single color and all the examples I see on the web using fill, and linearGradient throw up errors so I assume these were only in the beta? This is very frustrating to not be able to do a simple thing in flex 4 that worked in flex 3. Any ideas? Thanks.
Button {
cornerRadius: 3;
highlightAlphas: 0.36, 0;
fillAlphas: 1, 1, 1, 1;
paddingLeft: 5;
paddingRight: 5;
backgroundColors: #ff6600, #ff9900, #ffffff, #eeeeee;
color: #ffffff;
disabledColor: black;
textRollOverColor: #000000;
textSelectedColor: #000000;
borderColor: #ff6600;
fontWeight: normal;

This may not be what you're looking for, but since you are stuck, I'll elaborate on what FTQuest was saying. It will only take a few minutes to do this.
In FB4:
1. right-click the button, choose "Create Skin", give it a package (directory) and name (filename), host component "spark.components.Button" and "Create as copy of" "spark.skins.spark.ButtonSkin".
This creates junk.mxml for you, the skin file.
2. In the source of junk.mxml, change layer 1 (shadow) and layer 2 (fill) colors as I did here in this code. Note that where you see {color#}, this is data-binding to a variable I've made in a color.as file that I've included in the skin file. In fact, that is ALL that I changed in the skin file it generated for me.
snippet from colors.as:
public   var color1:int = new int(0xA1D190);
snippet from junk.mxml:
<![CDATA[
include "Colors.as";
layer changes in junk.mxml:
<!-- layer 1: shadow -->
<!--- @private -->
<s:Rect id="shadow" left="-1" right="-1" top="-1" bottom="-1" radiusX="2">
<s:fill>
<s:LinearGradient rotation="90">
<s:GradientEntry color="0x000000" color.down="
{color5}"alpha="
0.01"alpha.down="
0" />
<s:GradientEntry color="0x000000" color.down="
{color6}" alpha="
0.07"alpha.down="
0.5" />
</s:LinearGradient>
</s:fill>
</s:Rect>
<!-- layer 2: fill -->
<!--- @private -->
<s:Rect id="fill" left="1" right="1" top="1" bottom="1" radiusX="2">
<s:fill>
<s:LinearGradient rotation="90">
<s:GradientEntry color="{color2}" color.over="
{color3}" color.down="
{color4}" alpha="
0.85" />
<s:GradientEntry color="{color4}" color.over="
{color5}" color.down="
{color6}" alpha="
0.85" />
</s:LinearGradient>
</s:fill>
</s:Rect>
You can (and maybe should) hardcode colors in here to do your gradients. After this, your button will need to use the skin, like:
<s:Button ... skinClass="Skins.junk">
... where "Skins" is the name of the package/directory I told it to create the skin in.
This may not be ideal for you, but it's working for me. Regarding having variables for color values, I posted a thread this morning asking if this is the best way to do things or not, so I don't know if it's the way to go.
Hope this helps ...

• Extrude and bevel banding... how do you make the gradient smooth?

Hi,
I've got a shape that I want to make 3D using extrude and bevel tool but despite making the blend steps the highest possible amount, I still have banding. I'm using CS6. And there's no gradient on the flat image (it began as white). Any ideas?

• How can I make my content follow my master when master page size is changed?

I have a header with a menu structure etc. that is set as a master page. When I create a new page and apply the master to this page, everything looks fine. I will then start designing the rest of the page. However, if my master page should change size, the content of the page it is applied to will not move accordingly. What am I doing wrong?
I'll try explaining it with an example:
Say my header on my master page is originally 250px in height, and I design all the pages using this master, but then decide that my header needs to increase to 300 px in height. Then my master header will just be laid OVER the content of the page. Isn't there a way to make the content under the header move automatically when the master size is changed?
Also, it really should be possible to add more than one master to a page.

The correct master is applied, but I can't get it to work. Am I doing something wrong with the guides?
I have included screenshots that show how the master looks, how the page with the master looks, and what happens when I change the size of the master page.
Master:
Page with applied master
Content doesn't move when master page changes size
Please let me know what I'm doing wrong!

• How Do I Make An Alternative Template Directory Path?

We want to set up a directory path that would allow everybody in the office to share the templates that have been made. The Managers share the Templates, thus I need the Template directory to exist in a common Place. Is there a way to set a share template folder?

You certainly can put a folder full of templates on a server that everyone can access, but what will happen is that when they open and resave them as templates they will be saved to the personal template location.
Where that is on your Mac, depends on what version you are talking about, which you haven't mentioned.
There are other ways to do this.
One way would be to create a folder/s of Pages files that you will use as templates on your server and add an alias pointing to the folder/s in the Sidebar of all your employee's Macs. To secure the originals you can make the files Locked/Stationery pad or the folder Read Only. You won't get the Template Chooser but you could set the folder up to Icon View and make that as large as you like.
I am sure if you sit down and think about it there will be multiple ways you can manage the process.
If you have a server Admin they should be able to work this out for themselves.

• How to make a line follow a motion path

alright, i'm gonna try and explain this as best as possible. i want to do something like what apple did for the motion video, where lines follow a motion path. but my problem is that when the line hits a keyframe, the line stays straight and turns its axis (looking ********), unlike apple's vid where the line itself turns and curves around each keyframe.....alright does that make any sense? look at the picture below, see how the lines are curved to follow a path....my lines stay straight and look like the second pic.
