How do I make a paint brush similar to MS Paint's?

The closer I got to the same look was to create a brush with the size of 1 pixel and 500% spacing, but it's still a bit slow to get even a small area looking like it's been sprayed. Plus, in the end my pattern looks too regular, not very natural. Here is part of the image whose look I'm trying to recreate (400% and 100%).

- the brush size can make the pattern blurrier if the size if the brush is larger than the size of the image used for defining the brush.
- sorry, I forgot to mention that Alt/Option + right click dragging resizes the brush on the fly. I'm using a digital pen and I press its buttons by instinct without realizing it. I had to do it slowly and watch my fingers to find out
Try using the attached image for your brush profile and see if it is better. Open the image in Photoshop select all and choose Edit > Define Brush Preset.
Open the Brush panel, select Shape Dynamics property, and set its Angle Jitter to 100%. leave all other sliders to 0% and all controls to Off.
When I zoom in the reference image I see that some of the spots vary in lighter shades. To get that, select the Transfer property and try its Flow Jitter, leave all other sliders and controls to 0% and Off.
Leave all other brush properties unchecked.
Depending on the resolution of your image you may try the above with different sizes of the brush profile image. If you resize the image larger and it gets blurry use the Levels adjustment on the image to reduce the blur.

I want to make a custom brush image in a gradient color scheme. I know how to change the hue jitter, but I want to "paint" the image with a gradient between two colors. For example, I have an image of an octopus that I have used to create a custom brush. I want the top of the octopus to be hot pink and gradually fade into a deep orange at the end of the tentacles. Everything I've looked up just colors the background. Thanks in advance!

Try the following:
Open the octopus image
Open a Gradient Map Adjustment layer above this. There are several preset gradients, but in my version of the program I don't see one with pink to orange.
When you double click on the gradient bar in the Adjustments palette, this will open up the Gradient Editor, where you can tailor the gradient to your specifications with color and opacity stops. (see below)
This will apply the gradient to the entire picture. However, the adjustment layer has a built-in mask (the white rectangle).
Left click on this and paint with a black brush to hide the gradient outside of the octopus. If you go too far, you can correct with a white brush.

How does one make very large brush strokes of several inches wide. I could do this in the previous version of Apurture.

I just upgraded my Aperture app but now it will not allow me to make inches wide brush strokes when I need to lighten, darken or other adjustments. In the previous version I could make inches wide adjustments. I really need to do this again. How can I do this?

The brush size is measured in pixels. The maximum is 1,000 px. If you have any pixel-filtering turned on, the maximum size drops to 200 px. In the Brush HUD, make sure "Detect Edges" is un-checked, and that "Brush Range" is "All".

I'm looking to build a loader image, that opens up at the start of my script, and automatically closes after a few seconds. I opened up the image processor script to see how Adobe has added images to alerts, but it's an extensive doc, and I couldn't tell where the image was being pulled from, as the variable only shows up twice, and is only called, and not set. Also is there another method other than alert to call a box like this? I would prefer it have no buttons.

I was able to boil your script down, to what I need. Works great in extendscript, but for some reason, only shows a portion of the image in photoshop and illustrator. This was happening even before i boiled it down. Thoughts? The last thing I'm trying to do with it, is figure out if I can set a transparent background for the window. I also tried using backgroundColor, but was unable to set the attribute correctly... there is a lot to learn with Adobe scripting. I also couldn't find reference to what DELTA_H is, I have a bunch of their PDFs, and googled, but couldn't find reference to this. I'm trying to be resourceful so I don't have to ask such remedial questions.

How do i make a 3D brush tool to make the effect attached? PLEASE HELP!!

This has been one of my favorite ads for the past few years and have now found a similiar use for the style. The text that says yummy I believe is done with a brush tool but whenever I try to creat the effect to looks flat. The red lines stay on the top and do not wrap it suggesting the straw to be 3D. Another problem i am having is making the shadows on the straw to also look realistic. I have a fair amount of knowledge in illustrator so I understand most of the parts of the program very well.
Any info towards making the straw effect will help. What i can tell so far is each letter in done individullay and I believe they used the brush tool.
I have the newest version of Illustrator CC on a mac. I also own a tablet if that will help in recreating the text.

As was mentioned in the forum, the original was most likely NOT done in Illustrator, but most things CAN be illustrated in 2D. Here is a link to the working ai file.

A few pointers:
The bottom blend is based on one stroke that was duplicated and manually offset before converting to a blend.
To create the illusion of overlapping, portions of the bottom blend were copied and re-blended.
These blends were masked with a "Transparency Mask". In hind site a simple clipping mask would have worked just as well.
The very bottom stroke of the original blend was duplicated and expanded, then set as a layer clipping mask.
Shadows and hilites were added and moved to the appropriate position in the layer. The layer clipping mask made these look believable without much fuss.
I may try to create a tutorial of these steps and share on my blog at some point. It is a fun little challenge.

Experiment with different painting styles. Use a variety of brush stroke effects to create different looks.
1. After selecting the "Make a Painting" tutorial, press "Begin Tutorial" to start. Tap Adjustments > Saturation.
2. Set the value to 100% to intensify the colors. Tap OK.
3. Tap Add Layer > Duplicate Layer. You'll create the painting on this layer.
4. Tap Effects > Artistic > Acrylic Paint
5. Enter these values: Jitter= 85%, Size= 20%, Length= 0%, Tap OK. This creates a pointillist effect.
6. Tap the target on this layer to hide it. Tap the bottom layer.
7. Tap Effects > Artistic > Acrylic Paint
8. For an abstract brush effect, enter these values: Jitter= 100%, Size= 30%, Length=138%. Tap OK.
Tip: To enter the percentage by number instead of using the slider, tap the value field to open the keyboard editor.
9. Tap the target on the top layer to unhide it and decide which effect you like best.
Tip: To delete an unwanted layer, choose the layer in the layers panel. Tap Layer options > Delete layer to remove the layer.
10. Tap the back arrow in the top options bar. This will prompt you to save. Press Save to save your project.

How do I get the adjustment brush to "paint" white? I have tried the color panel, but nothing works.

Make sure 'Auto Mask' is unchecked, Flow & Density = 100, and desired Feathering is set before painting. Set the Adjustment Brush to Exposure = +4. If you have LR5 right-click on the Adjustment Brush pin you just created and select Duplicate. If you have LR4 or earlier you'll probably need to manually paint the area twice with Exposure = +4.

Mark, I did everything stated. Except set sequence to "From". Their was not a "From" under Traversal.
The leaves are still appearing with the write on behavior. I would like as each leaf is "written on" to fade in, not just appear. The sequence paint behavior fades in the row after the leafs appear.
Also what is IIRC?

The easiest thing to start with is to reset the Eraser Tool.
Right click on the Eraser icon in the tool options bar and then click on Reset Tool.

You didn't say which model of iPod Nano that you have, but generally there should be a lock setting, that can be turned on or off, to prevent accidental changes in settings. And, there is also a setting to turn on or off a feature called, "Shake to Shuffle." It allows you to change songs by just shaking the iPod.

I tried having a JPanel as one of my instance variables inside my class.
In the paint method i called paint on the JPanel and passed in a graphics2D object created from an image.
But JPanel does not paint on my image. How do I make it do that?
Basically I want to do some effects on text, but do not want to be bothered about text layout. So I want my JLabel to paint its output on an image and then I can do the effects with the image.

Create an image, get it graphics and call the paint method of the label.

As you can see the 5 looks different (thicker?) than the 1 and 9 and I'm wondering how I can make this look similar.
I've been playing around with the eye drop tool and pencil for 2 hours but I can't see the logic in how to fix this issue.

I need each stroke to be tapered at both ends and be a certain stroke size.
But each stroke I make, I have to edit that one path to be correct.

How can I make a Magic eraser brush?

Hi, does anyone know how I can make a magic eraser brush? and no I don't mean to simply click the Magic eraser tool and then go from there.....what I mena is that I have a black background on one layer then a second layer with a picture of something, I made my own custom brushes and I want to click fill on the black layer so that it will act as a magic eraser brush so that the image below will be able to show through. I know I could just fill the brush pattern as white and then click magic eraser but it looks too clumsy as my custom brush is pretty complicated.

The magic eraser tool is not a brush tool, so you can't make your own brushes for it. If you want to use your custom brushes, then I would suggest you use a layer mask to let the background show through, this is also better as it's non-destructive.
