How do I make a re-installable system clone? Just in case!

Hi everyone,
So, I've got my copy of Leopard and am anxious to upgrade my trusty PowerBook, however, after reading some of the issues posted here I am also somewhat apprehensive.
I would like to make a clone of my current system, which is running sweetly on 10.4.10 with a lot of other 3rd party apps that I fear may not be compatible with Leopard. This is the main reason I want to clone the system.
I have a brand new 80GB Firewire drive ready for the event, but as I have never done this before I would greatly appreciate any and all advice on this topic please.
What is the best software to use? I've heard of SilverKeeper and there is DeJaVu with Toast8. Are there anymore I should consider?
Will I be able to use the clone as re-installable disc image to return my system to it's previous state? Would that work through the disc utility's 'restore' function or another process?
Would I be better off to install Leopard onto the external F/W drive and run some software tests first?
Reading all these problems has put me into a minor panic. I was so excited to buy Leopard, but now I am fearful of installing it.

Nope. I made a copy via Carbon Copy Cloner. I have it on my Firewire drive but have no way to get it back onto the boot drive. You can't copy over a running OS and I can't boot from the firewire drive for some reason (Kernal Panic). I don't get it. It is like the chicken or the egg. I am stuck. I do not want eopard anymore and can't get my cloned 10.4.10 back to my G5. It appears I need an image file. When I go that route, it allows me to clone the items on a drive, back to the same drive, but says "by clicking ok, you will delete the files on the drive and then create an image file on that drive". Sorry, but that makes NO SENSE.

Also your Mac's Disk Utility can make a bootable clone;

Consider though, if your internal HD is failing and defective, then any clone however made, may carry that defect.
Perhaps it would be better to copy your personal data, photos emails etc, to an external drive as well, just in case the clone did not work because of the failing hard drive.

I'm making a game for school that is a vertical scrolling shooter (like the Raiden series), based off of the anime Galaxy Angel. For anyone who has seen GA would know there's 5 main characters, all of which I have put in my game. My program is an application (so swing answers only please), and made up of 4 classes: Title Page, Character Select, Main Game, and Credits. I intend to make my program load different Player sprites depending on what character is chosen. Can someone tell me how I can make my Main Game class read which character has been chosen from my Character Select class?

A very quick and easy way of doing this with Swing is using the JRadioButton class. The following suggestion is similar to a technique used in "How to use Radio Buttons".

Inside CharSel class:
First, declare a class String variable called "userIcon" or something at the top of your program. This will be the path of the icon for your user.

Of course, a more typesafe way of doing that would be to use enums. If you did use enums, you could even include methods for your enum constants (ie: CharSel.Chars.BOB.getImageIcon() may return Bob's ImageIcon).

How to add solaris packages to installled system...

I have a minimally installed Sun Solaris system. I need a lot more functionality on it, like developper tools.
I know how to install a packege. The problem is finding out which packages to install. The installation CD contains a whol ot of SUNW* packages with cryptic names, and when you try to install one of them I usually run in to dependency problems.
So is there a convenient way to do the following:
- Given I need a particular tool (eg /usr/ccs/bin/as )
- Find out what package that tool belongs too
- Install that package and all its dependencies automatically?
Under Linux (an Os where I do have somewhat more experience) this is a trivial exercise. But how do I do this under Solaris?

I know I can just try to install a package using pkgadd and see where it breaks. But to do this I first have to know what package to install. That is the first problem. I need "foo", how do I find out what package contains "foo"?
Searching for sollutions I came across a concept called "metacluster", which is aparently sun's way of packaging lots of related stuff together. I found out that the metacluster installed on my system was "SUNWCuser" and that I probably want it to be "SUNWCprog". But I have no idea how to get there.

I've got an SSD drive on the way, should be here in a few days.
But the mac mini didn't come with any OS media - is there an easy way to burn myself one so I can use it to do a clean install on the new drive? I do have an external (USB) DVD writer that works fine with the mac mini... (I used it to install win7 bootcamp).
As you probably can guess i'm a total mac NOOB, the machine is set to boot into win7 by default and I havent really had time to even poke around in the Mac OS ( its my wife's machine, actually). We bought it because we wanted to have a SILENT machine that didnt take up a lot of space. I have to say it does the job amazingly well ( runs win7 very fast). One of these days we're gonna try out the mac OS...

You will have to retain the HDD because you need it to prep the SSD.
Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Next, you want to install Lion on the SSD:
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstall Lion:
Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button. When the installer prompts for the target disk click on the Show More Disks link and select the SSD as the target drive. The whole process takes a while because the Lion installer takes while to download.

Click on the j2exe23c.exe(75k) download it and install in ur system. convert the class file to windows exe.
The put the exe in the startup folder in windows.
If ur not able to find that folder search for it and put that exe in that folder.

I work in mainstage 2.2.2 with patches that are using splits, and I want to make an octave button for just one instruments in a patch. Suggestions? (If I press the octave button in my keyboard, the whole split point moves, no good...)

An octave button for just one instrument will work for some instruments. EVB3, ESX24, ESM and a few others can be assigned. However I was unable to make it work with EVP88 and ES2. Try this example: in layout mode set up a button(or buttons) on your controller keyboard for changing octaves. In edit mode add a channel strip and select an ESX24 instrument. Select the screen control button you want to assign in the workspace. In the screen control inspector, select the mappings tab. The list below will say unmapped. Double-click on it. Select the instrument in the list. Another list to the right will appear. Select ESX24 (Sampler). In the column to the right, select the pitch folder, then select transpose. To the right, you'll see saved value, button on and button off values. This should get you started. Some of the instruments have different menus, so they'll be a little different. Have fun with it.

If you are using function module generic extraction and using PACKAGE SIZE S_S_IF-MAXSIZE, then comment it or remove it wherever necessary. Then it should bring it in one single datapack from the source itself.

Well I just spent some time searching for that and found one round-about way:
Open a document and choose Table in the toolbar.
Open Inspector and choose Table.
The default on mine was 3 rows and 3 columns - I changed that to fill up the page with horizontal lines and chose 1 column in the page width.
That resulted in this (partial screenshot):
That may not be what you wanted, but it's the only thing I found.

More details would help...what have you done to get to a white screen? Were you in the process of reinstalling Mac OS X? Or something else?
In general, to reinstall Mac OS X, restart the Mac and hold the Command and R keys. From the Utilities drop down select Install Mac OS X and the system will download the installer. You w I'll then follow the instructions to install.
By the way, you posted in the iMac PPC forum, this belongs in Yosemite from what you show on your info line, I will ask for relocation.
