How do I make Finder windows narrower (in Lion)?

One new feature of 10.7 Lion is that the minimum possible Findow window width seems to have increased (to around 300 pixels it seems, from about 150 in 10.6).   Does anyone know how to decrease the window width? 300 pixels is too wide for the 13 inch MacBook.
I phoned Apple and they said "it can't be done" .....   I just do not believe that, there has to be a way.   (I am not a Terminal guru, so I need walking through this if a route via the Terminal -- inevitable -- is required.)

Is anyone from Apple listening?

  • How do I make Finder windows always open in new windows?

    Subject says it all - there used to be a preference for this in Finder's preferences, but it was apparently removed from Mavericks. I'm getting tired of having to right-click to open each new folder, and I adamantly refuse to allow a Finder window to represent anything more than one folder.

    The default behaviour in Mavericks is to open folders in a new tab in an existing window, however this can be changed.
    Unfortunately, it's not that simple. There's a very long topic on this change in Mavericks. Currently, there are only two ways to get Mavericks to do what the OP is looking for. That is, to have nested folders open in their own folder window instead of taking over the same open window when you double click it.
    1) Hold down the option key while double clicking the folder.
    2). If you hide all of the extraneous stuff (top and side bars) by pressing Command+Option+T, then nested folders will automatically open in their own folder window without having to hold any modifier key down. But the bars must be hidden on every subfolder in order for that work. Any folder with either the top bar, side bar or both showing will always open the nested folder in the same folder window instead of spawning its own.

    How can I make a window show up in every desktop so when a user switches views it's still on their screen, using Xcode, Applescript-ObjC?

    hi, try this:
    public static void centerWindow(Window win){
    Dimension screenSizeWithSpeedBar = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getScreenSize();
    Dimension screenSize = new Dimension(screenSizeWithSpeedBar.width,screenSizeWithSpeedBar.height-25);
    Dimension frameSize = win.getSize();
    if (frameSize.height > screenSize.height)
    frameSize.height = screenSize.height;
    if (frameSize.width > screenSize.width)
    frameSize.width = screenSize.width;
    win.setSize(frameSize);
    win.setLocation((screenSize.width - frameSize.width) / 2, (screenSize.height - frameSize.height) / 2);
    It works with following arguments: JWindow, JFrame and JDialog

    Click on the Hot Corners..  button and look at the four definitions.  In the picture below, if you moved the cursor to the right top of the screen, it would slide all the applications off the screen as you describe and show the desktop.  Set it to "-" to deactivate.

  • How do I make a window full screen and keep my connected monitor separate to utilize with other programs?

    I just got a MacBookPro and have an external monitor connected to it. I opened a window to full screen and the connected monitor went to a gray screen while the MBP monitor showed the program in full screen. How can I make them independant so this doesn't happen?

    Hello Azul37,
    go to your Applications folder and ctrl-click iDVD, then choose "Show Package Contents" from the drop-down menu. Next navigate to the Resources folder, find the theme, duplicate and rename it, then open the copy with the above procedure (choose Full Frame 1 for this - the other one is a bit tricky)
    Again navigate to the Resources folder and find a folder named "FullFrameTitle.pox". There are other folders inside - open them one by one until you find a TIFF file with a long name with loads of numbers and delete it. Now the grey bar for the title is gone.
    Next launch iDVD and choose your (modified) theme. Import a movie. You'll see the grey bar appear as button under the text. Go to the Settings tab in the Customize pane, select the button options and choose "Text Only". Voilà
    Note: I recommend you leave the grey bar for the buttons - it provides better on-screen visibility.
    If you are interested in tweaking your iDVD themes I recommend reading here:

  • How do I make a windows 10 recovery disk

    How do I make a back-up/recovery disk for Windows 10?  I made one when I bought this machine that had Windows 8.1 on it but I don't recall how I did it.  Help please.  Thanks in advance for the help.

    Hi there
    Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, both from other users, HP experts and other support personnel. I understand that you are looking for a method to make a recovery disk for your system after upgrading to Windows 10.  I am happy to help with this. The method you would have used to make recovery media for your original operating system would be to use the factory installed recovery manager.  As an FYI for the Windows 8 method -Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8)
    Troubleshooting HP System Recovery Problems (Windows 8)HP PCs - Creating and Using a System Image to Restore Your Computer (Windows 8) However those tools are not going to help for making a Windows 10 image. For Windows 10, the intention of Microsoft is to dispense with recovery images, however there are still ways to make one. Here are a few pages I found that cover the options in the operating system, how to make a repair disk, and to make an image. Recovery options in Windows 10 - windows.microsoft.comHow to Create a USB Recovery Drive in Windows 10 - www.tenforums.comReset Recovery Image - Create in Windows 10 - www.tenforums.com I hope this helps.

  • How do I make one window progress to another in swing

    Ive got to design a simple quizgame interface using Swing. Its got to have a player's front-end - gives a selection of questions where the user selects one of five answers, a scoring front-end - displayed after game that allows user to enter their name and a manager's front-end - used to enter questions. The thing is I only have to design the interface. I want to have a front window that leads to the managers front end, scoreboard, and game seperatley. I also want the system to report back when the players got the question wrong or right and then take them to a scoreboard. I dont know how to keep this all seperate from the normal code in the program being written by someone else. I also dont know how to make one window lead to another etc. Please can someone help. does anyone have some code I coulkd adapt for this purpose Im really stuck!!!

    Have a look at CardLayout. Rather than adding removing components, you can keep your three screens separate. Basically, you have three JPanels only one of which will be displayed at any one time. If one has textfields and you switch to another and then back, the text in the textfields will still be there.
    Here's some snippets from an application of mine:
    // set a 'container' panel to cardLayout. This will 'hold' the panels to be displayed at any one time
    private CardLayout cardDisplay;
    deck = new JPanel();
    cardDisplay = new CardLayout();
    deck.setLayout(cardDisplay);
    // add your various screens to the 'container' panel
    deck.add(logonPanel, "LogonPanel");
    deck.add(newUserPanel, "NewUserPanel");
    deck.add(bookingPanel, "BookingPanel");
    deck.add(printPanel, "PrintPanel");
    // add the 'container' panel to the contentPane
    c.add(deck, BorderLayout.CENTER);
    // switch the display, for example when a button is pressed, by using
    cardDisplay.show(deck, "NewUserPanel");
    cardDisplay.show(deck, "EnquiryPanel");

  • How do I get Finder windows to hold their settings?

    Reading in other discussions, I see some folks are having problems with desktop icons moving around. My desktop icons are fine and stay put, but my Finder windows continually rearrange themselves to whatever random design Lion wants to give them.
    They will not retain size, toolbar on / off, arrange by / sort by, icon size or grid spacing etc. For a while I thought I had the problem sorted by leaving the main User window open when I shut down at night, but this 'solution' didn't hold either.
    I have worked my way through the View options, tried resetting defaults etc etc, but either there's nothing I can do about it (bug?) or I am missing something simple.
    Any thoughts would be appreciated. TIA

    I have this problem too, and it's maddening.  My latest effort fo fix it has been to make .DS_Store read only using the Terminal.  This will work for directories that you never alter; I did it to my home directory.  If you do it to directories that change, the results will be undefined, because the Finder will be unable to write changes to the .DS_Store file reflecting the position of the new files.
    To do this, open Terminal in /Applications/Utilities, and then type:
    cd "/Path/to/directory/to/fix"
    Replace the path with the folder you need to fix.  If you're not sure what it is, you can just type "cd " (without the quotes, but note the space after the letters 'cd') and then drag the folder you want to fix onto the Terminal window.  Then press return.
    Now, type:
    chmod 444 .DS_Store
    Make sure you include the period at the beginning of the .DS_Store name.  Press return.  This will effectively lock the .DS_Store file and prevent the Finder from screwing it up.  Your icon positions and window settings will be fixed in place until you make the .DS_Store file writable again.  To do that, repeat Step 1 above, and change Step 2 as follows:
    chmod 644 .DS_Store
    That will return the .DS_Store file to its original state and undo the changes you made.
    I have tested this only on my home directory, which never changes.  Doing this to directories to which files are added and removed will result in undefined behavior.  It will not damage your computer or your files, but Finder windows for that directory will not behave in a predictable fashion.

  • How can I make Finder show thumbnail-sized photos?

    I am running OS 10.60 on a Macbook Air. I remember on the Powerbook G4 OS 10.39 I was able to see small thumbnail-sized pictures in the Finder window when I clicked on a photo. I could even run small-sized movies in the Finder window when I clicked on them.
    Now I have to wait for Preview to show the picture and it takes a long time. When I am going through a folder full of hundreds of photos to select certain ones it takes forever to go through them all.
    How can I get the pictures to show up as thumbnail-sized pictures in Finder?

    In the Finder, View menu, show View Options, show icon preview.
    For video previews, the minimum icon size is 64 x 64.
    There is also always a preview column in column view.
    You can use Coverflow view to go through a folder full of image files.
    You can Quicklook the image files. Select one and hit space bar. You can navigate through the folder with arrow keys or tab and the Quicklook will change to whatever image is selected.

  • How do I get Finder windows to display free space on hard drive?

    In Snow Leopard if you opened a Finder window, at the bottom it would show how much free space your hard drive had left.  Lion by default does not do this.  Is there a way where I can turn that option on so i can view space availible when opening Finder windows?

    Stop blaming yourself. You're not an idiot and it's never the user's fault. It's always the designer's fault. Read "The Design of Everyday Things' by Donald Norman. It's a gerat book about how everyday things can be just difficult to use. He's been also a former Apple employee. Great reading!

  • How do I hide Finder windows of Network Shares at login?

    I am using an Intel Mac mini CD to connect to Samba sharepoints on a PowerMac 2x2 that runs OS X Server Tiger. I have added the sharepoints to the login items so that at login my user is automatically connected to the sharepoints and has access to those sharepoints relevant to his needs.
    My problem is, every login results in 5 separate Finder windows opening, one for each sharepoint. These then have to be manually closed, which defeats my argument to users that Macs give higher productivity than Windows.
    I have tried ticking "hide" in the prefs, but this has absolutely no effect whatsoever, probably because I would have to hide Finder at login and that seems not to be possible (I doubt if it would work anyway since I can't get "Hide" to work for any app, but that's not this issue).
    How do I have the sharepoints connect without opening any Finder windows? They need to be visible in a Finder sidebar when manually opened, and on the desktop, but they must not open automatically.
    TIA

    That was very helpful, thanks. In actual fact I could remove the delay line completely because the Apple Script did not run until after all the sharepoints had loaded.
    This was probably because the sharepoints were entered into the login items first and appear above the Apple Script which is the last entry in the login list. I expect the login items are being treated by OS X as a sequential list - Job 1 is started and completed, then Job 2 is started and completed and so on until Job 'n' has finished, then the list stops.
    For me, this means Jobs 1 - 5 are "Mount Sharepoint" jobs, with Job 6 being "Run the Apple Script". Since the Finder windows have already finished opening, I do not need a delay to close them.
    Many thanks for showing me Apple Script isn't so difficult to use! I really appreciate that. I really must read that book I bought on it a year ago!
    It would be nice to know how not to have Finder open the windows in the first place though.
    Thanks again.
