My browser runs very sluggish these days. Tried to download
Firefox 4, but could not on this version of Mac. Seems I'm
stuck with the 3.6 browser. Any suggestion on how to make
it run a little faster?

For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. TechTool Pro provides additional repair options including file repair and recovery, system diagnostics, and disk defragmentation. TechTool Pro 4.5.1 or higher are Intel Mac compatible; Drive Genius is similar to TechTool Pro in terms of the various repair services provided. Versions 1.5.1 or later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts had been significantly reduced in Tiger and Leopard. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems.
I would also recommend downloading the shareware utility TinkerTool System that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old logfiles and archives, clearing caches, etc. Other utilities are also available such as Onyx, Leopard Cache Cleaner, CockTail, and Xupport, for example.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the commandline. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):

How can I make Adobe Premiere Elements 9 run faster on my computer?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 running windows vista 32 bit, and recently adobe premiere elements 9 has been having really rough playback, meaning it will often freeze or skip many frames when I try to watch what I have edited. It also stops responding very often. Any ideas on what I can do to fix this? Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks

Almost any graphics adapter will do fine in PE9... it is not until you get to Premiere Pro that the graphics card makes a difference

I find that the three drives I use work very well for me, for editing AVCHD video... some people use a 4th drive, so video INPUT files are on drive three and all OUTPUT files are on drive four... I only bought a mid-tower case instead of a full tower case (my bad... but had to fit in the space available on my office desk!) so I use the three drives that will fit

Make a matte in Photoshop.
From the Photoshop menu bar: File > New > Film & Video Presets. Choose one that suits your FCP project pixel dimensions. Make the background black. Place a white rectangle with rounded corners on top (the white will determine how much of your picture is visible). Flatten Image. Save as TIFF. Import into FCP.
Move your video clips up to V2. Place the imported TIFF on V1. Highlight all clips on V2.
Go to Modify > Composite Mode > Travel Matte Luma. Done.
If you want soft edges, no need for a matte. Double click your clip to place it in the Viewer. Open up the Motion tab > Crop > Edge Feather. Nice and quick. Copy and Paste attributes for the other clips.

Firefox v15 and up cause my computer (MAC OSX 10.8.2) to freeze for about 30 seconds every 15-30 seconds and forces me to turn it off with the power button. It only causes this after I have opened Firefox, my computer runs fine before opening Firefox. I have uninstalled Firefox and cleared my personal settings. I have installed future updates (16 and 17) and have run into the same issue. I cannot pull any information on RAM or CPU usage because when it happens it makes my computer unusable. Unfortunately I need to use FF for work and can't. I have tried the different responses on the forums to reduce the amount of RAM and CPU usage with no change in performance.

Do a malware check with some malware scan programs. You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of the database before doing a scan.

How do you make what Firefox lists as "unknown plugins" known?

When I go to the Plugin Check page to check for updates, there is a list of the Plugins that I'm using... about half are "known" which enables me to update but the other half is listed as "Unknown plugin" which makes it so that I can't update them... how do I make those "known"?

Hi, i also have the same problem, and i try to keep my plugins all up to date, but the fact is that half of them continually says that are unknown!I did the research and try to download some of them - because the others can´t find the download buttons on the researched pages-, to download the newer version and still keep having the same message.For ex. i did the research for picnic and did the download of the newer version, although i thought i had already the newer version, and after doing that i closed firefox and open it again and clicked on check for updates and still gives me the same message saying that the plugin is unknown???'I just don´t understand!!The same thing for google talk plugin and for google earth, i downloaded the newer version and still keeps giving me the same message.I send here a screenshot of some of the plugins that have that message. I also realised that the big majority of them are from google, like google update, for ex.I just would like to say that i have the firefox updated too, i checked that.

I have to log completely out, Restart my computer, then it will let me get online or browse net.

Did you check the Offline setting in File > Work Offline?

how about a GUI, ever heard of a GUI? it's this really neat thing, where you don't have to worry about remembering long strings of text to do something. Mac OS X actually has a rather decent one (that was sarcasm by the way, Mac is the best) you could have it done in like 30 sec, if you use the network pane of system preferences.

I have installed Microsoft Remote Desktop 8.0.5 For MAC OSX 10.8.5 and added new remote connection in the list which works fine.
Now i export same connection to .rdp file but when i execute it mstsc opens remote os login screen for user password to login (which is already in keychain store).
Question:
how can i launch .rdp file so that it will not ask remote user password?
where/how to store password?

Which Firefox version fits best with iMac G5 + Mac OSX 10.5.8?

I made a mistake.
I installed Safari 5.0.6 with loss of good functioning of the browser (lay out not any longer the same as with Safari 4) because my iMac G5 (with PPC) runs under Mac OSX 10.5.8. The computer refuses reinstallation of the older version (Safari 4).
The temporary solution in my idea is using Firefox in the adapted version. Could you tell me which one?
