I have Preview as my default viewer for files I download. But Acrobat thinks it can make itself the default for pdf links I click on the web. I hate Acrobat on the Mac, and I only need it once a year for filing my state taxes online. How do I eliminate Adobe's "entitlement mentality?"

The quickest way to make Preview your default PDF viewer is to:
1) Get Info on a PDF file.
2) Under open with, select Preview.
3) Click change all.
Now all PDF files will open with Preview by default.

in order to change the default PDF viewer in Safari from Adobee, you need to have root user access!
a bit tedious but really a easy task - see below:
How to enable the root user:
OS X Mavericks
From the Apple menu choose System Preferences....
From the View menu choose Users & Groups.
Click the lock and authenticate as an administrator account.
Click Login Options....
Click the "Edit..." or "Join..." button at the bottom right.
Click the "Open Directory Utility..." button.
Click the lock in the Directory Utility window.
Enter an administrator account name and password, then click OK.
Choose Enable Root User from the Edit menu.
come up with a password you wish to use in both the Password and Verify fields, then click OK. (you don't have to remember it forever)
then, log out as yourself and log back in as the root user...
at the login screen, the username will be root, and the password will be the one just made up in Step 10 above.
don't set up with icloud or anything - just cancel any popups that ask for keychain or whatever...just get to the desktop screen and then, from the menu bar at the top of the desktop screen...choose the Go menu....now hold down the option key and another choice on the menu (for the library) should show up...
choose library.
in the search bar at the top right of the finder window for the library folder, type kind:plugin.... the two plugins should show up. be sure the search is searching the library folder.
after you have trashed the two adobe pdfviewer plugins, empty the trash and log out as the root user ...
now, disable root user:
to disable the root user

I installed Adobe Reader and now Safari uses Adobe as the pdf viewer. How do I revert to the superior product of Preview as Safari's default pdf viewer. Finder still defaults to Preview.

Quit Safari.
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type of copy / paste: /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Click Go then move the Adobe PDF Browser plugin from the Internet Plug-Ins folder to the Trash.
Relaunch Safari to test.

I made the mistake of using Adobe Acrobat pdf reader for opening pdf's. Then I learned it was better to use Preview. So I deleted Acrobat. I then I couldn't open any pdf's in Safari. None. So I opened a pdf in a folder. Went get info. Selected Preview as reader. Clicked "Change All." But it still doesn't work. When I try to open a pdf from Safari page, I just get a blank gray page.
How can I get this back to the way it should be with Preview doing all the pdf work and NO Adobe??

Quit Safari. In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
/Library/Internet Plug-ins
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then launch Safari and test.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

You can not make Firefox the default for viewing PDF files for the entire Windows Operating System, only the default viewer from within Firefox. Like when PDF files that are downloaded from websites and displayed in Firefox; you can try using '''File > Open File''' from within Firefox to view PDF file that are already saved on that PC, but I'm not sure that will work - I haven't tried doing that.

When Adobe Reader is installed it makes itself the default and then doesn't provide you anyway to change it that I know of. I tried uninstalling Adobe Reader but then realized that that is the only way to view PDFs from a web browser and therefore had to reinstall it.

Under the "Open with:" section, choose Preview.
Then click the button below that says "Change All..."
Now all your PDFs will open with Preview.

How to make CS3 the default image viewer after reloading CS

I had to reload my CS software and have not been able to use CS3 as the default vile viewer. Now CS is loaded when using the "open" and CS only appears in the "open with list". Obviously I would prefer all Photoshop programes (PS6, 7, etc) to be available, but will settle for the latest (CS3) to open my images. John, Many thanks for the promp reply. By the way, do you know why PS CS3 wants to only open files in 32 bit. I have probably changed a setting somewhere in preparation for new PC (Vista 64 bit) which I will be networking with 2 X windows XP PC's. CS opens these 8 bit jpgs ok but CS2 and CS3 tell me the docs arent 32 bit?   Looked at PS Image mode and 8/16/32/bit all there and 16bit normally ticked. Sorry to be a pain, but you seem to be on the "Ball" with PS.!!

Somehow downloads come down as Adobe Reader, not a PDF in Preview. How do I go back to Preview as the default download reader?

Select (but don't open) one of the downloaded PDF's and do Command+i to get info. Where it says 'Open with' choose Preview and click on the Change All.. button.

I have both Preview and Adobe Reader X installed. I want to configure my setting so when I select a pdf file, it opens in preview and adobe. I have looked through the preferences of both applications, but cannot see where I can change the default application settings.

When you have a pdf file (and I imagine other files types as well), and press command + I, it will open a general info window that will show all the info about that file. It gives a lot of helpful information.

Particularly when I am doing a Google search, but also when I am in a site, I find I frequently have to right click and force 'open in a new tab' to avoid the link overriding the current tab. I want to have all links I click on automatically open in a new tab. My settings are set to go to the new tab immediately - that works fine - but too often I have to immediately back-page and re-click using the right-click menu to avoid losing my search or origin page. This is annoying when there are several links I want to explore, and have to backtrack to get to them.

Google search and other websites have a user preference that can be set to open a search result in a new tab or a new window, for users who are logged in to their website.
Otherwise, when you don't have a 3-button mouse or a scroll pad with "middle-click" functionality, you can use '''{Ctrl + Click}''' to open a hyperlink in a new Tab.
