How do i manage photo storage in ios 8?

Now that Camera Roll has been removed from Photos, I can't tell which photos are physically on my device and which I'm getting via iCloud.  In the past I could manage my physical storage space by removing photos from my local device that I was happy to have access to only via Photostream. That is much more difficult now - I don't seem to have a specific option to "remove locally" vs "remove from Photostream".  I can only delete from all locations.  Plus, if I happen to be off-line, how can I be sure the photos I want to have access to all the time are available?  In the past, I could make sure those were on my physical storage even if they were part of Photostream.  I could also sync them to a folder on my computer and that does appear to still work, but in the face of moving to a more cloud-based solution, that seems clunky in the design Apple seems to be trying to achieve. So rather than rant about the poor decision decisions Apple seems to be making here and how they seem to be catering more to the crowd that wants to just pile up loads of rubbish without managing it, I'd like to focus on the specific questions around managing my physical storage and how to make sure the photos that I want uninterrupted access to are always available to me, even if I can't connect to iCloud.

True, but again, this is using multiple interfaces and comparing multiple lists to do what should be a simple job.  I can also connect the iPhone to my PC and inspect the DCIM folder to see which images are there.
I hope this is not the answer Apple intends.  If the only way I can manage my iPhone (or iPad) physical photo storage is to continue to use a PC or Mac to inspect the actual folders or sync specific folders in iTunes to ensure certain photos are available, then so be it, but it would be hard to say this is a convenient or elegant solution worthy of Apple.
I'm hoping someone from Apple reads this and can provide input as well - not that I'm not open to input from the larger community of course, but there is a lot of dissatisfaction out there in the public forums over some of these recent design decisions and I'm hoping it is because Apple has done a poor job of instructing users on how to use the tools properly rather than producing poor tools.

  • How do I manage my storage?

I have been mulling this over, especially since I lost some projects when I sold my iMac and upgraded to a new MBP. Here is as consise an overview as I can summize -
I have a MBP with 256 SSD running Logic Pro 9, Reason 6.5 and several plugins such as Camel Audio Alchemy - this SSD is almost full. I Time Machine back up to the 7200rpm 500GB which was replaced by the SSD - this external drive is almost full. I have an additional 1TB 7200rpm drive partitioned into 3; a 135GB (56GB free) back up of my very old G4 (much of which is probably not worth keeping); a 775GB (516GBfree) archive which includes my iMac Time Machine back up (the last back up failed before I safe erased the hard drive prior to selling, probably because I stopped it before it had finished); and a 90GB (60GB free) partition I created thinking I would use this partition for 3rd party loops and samples.
I am sure the performance of my SSD is already affected by the amount of data on this drive even though I have only been creating new projects on this and sometimes copying old projects onto the SSD to continue reworking etc... and so my issue/query is thus, how do I manage this data/storage?
Is it a good idea to strive towards only using the MBP with SSD for the program software and presets and try to keep all project files on external HDs?
I currently have a number of projects doubled up with originals on the 1TB drive and reworking/remixing on the SSD/500GB drive - can/should I amalgamate?
Similarly I have my own presets on multiple applications in the 2 separate locations, how should I manage this?
Is having a 3rd party loops and samples partition a good idea?
Is buying a lacie 4TB thunderbolt throwing good money after a confusing mess and can I continue with my current resources before I need to shell out that much cash?
I feel like I need an IT department but I'm just a one man band!
Any advice or support would be very welcome and gratefully received.
    cheers
    Andy

I have had many of the same issues / dilemmas. Here is my opiniion for what it's worth:
ANDY - Is it a good idea to strive towards only using the MBP with SSD for the program software and presets and try to keep all project files on external HDs?
    Yes.
ANDY - I currently have a number of projects doubled up with originals on the 1TB drive and reworking/remixing on the SSD/500GB drive - can/should I amalgamate?
Yes, I would try and keep them all on one drive
ANDY - Similarly I have my own presets on multiple applications in the 2 separate locations, how should I manage this?
What type of presets? I would keep these all together on the system drive as they should be quite small?
ANDY - Is having a 3rd party loops and samples partition a good idea?
Yes, kind of. I would have a separate drive for all 3rd party samples and sound libraries.
ANDY - Is buying a lacie 4TB thunderbolt throwing good money after a confusing mess and can I continue with my current resources before I need to shell out that much cash?
Maybe. Remember that however big a drive you have, you need to have another one at least as big to back everything up on to. Using time machine in any other way is a real pain.
So, if it's any help, how I use manage my storage currently is this:
1 x Macbook Pro with 500GB SSD - This contains all the applications and system data as well as any files I need to take with me if I go anywhere and don't take the external drives (certain MP3s for DJing). All the Logic 'Additional Content' is also on here, but I may need to move that soon (or delete it if I never use it)
1 x USB3.0 bus powered 2TB WD portable hard drive - This contains all the sound libraries / samples that I need to be loaded quickly. Currently 928GB in total.
1 x USB2.0 2TB WD external hard drive. This contains all data that doesn't need to be accessed regularly or very quickly (Unused applications, photos, videos, video tutorials, archive of MP3s not used anymore for DJing, and various backups of the internal SSD driver
Then I would have a 4TB time machine backup external drive - if a WD elements one was available - at the moment they only go to 3TB, so I currently split the backup over 2 other drives manually.
I also keep my current logic projects (for the current year) on the internal SSD for very quick loading. At the end of the year I move all the old ones I've finished with to the USB2 external drive.

  • Managing photo storage on my iPhone/iPhoto/Pictures/External Hard-drive

Hello, I need some help with managing photo storage on my iPhone/iPhoto/Pictures/External Hard-drive.
    Background:
I have 1,200 photos/videos on my iPhone 4S on the camera roll and need to delete them to save space. Most are photos/videos of my new baby which I would be devastated to lose, so I want to be 110% sure that I have them backed up properly and accessible.
I frequently hook my iPhone up to iPhoto to download all of the latest photos to iPhoto.
I have done Time Machine back ups and just did a latest one yesterday.
I would like to save my camera roll into a folder on my hard-drive so that all of these photos are in one place in case I need to access them (and not spread across different folders like in iPhoto).
My Mac (Macbook Pro - circa 2009) is now telling me that my 'Starter Disc is nearly full' and won't save all of the photos from my camera roll.
    My questions;
Are photos stored both in iPhoto and Pictures folder, and if so are they duplicates?
I've heard that Time Machine only backs up full libraries and so cannot be used to access individual photos - is this true? If so, how do you access individual photos/files from my external hard-drive?
How and where should I delete older photos from to save space on my Mac - iPhoto or Pictures? (once I know how to access them from my external drive if needed).
How do I delete all of my photos from my iPhone camera roll in one go? - I can only see a way to delete the 1,200 of them individually.
Going forward where is the best place for me to synch/upload my photos for medium term storage/access on my Mac?
I would consider myself quite intelligent but when it comes to this topic, I'm happy to be spoken to in very simplistic terms!
    Thank you.

Import the photos to iPhoto - then select the photos in iPhoto and export (file menu ==> export) to the desired location

  • How do I manage photos using a folder - subfolder type structure?

How do I manage photos using a folder - subfolder type structure as I have done previously within Windows? For example, my photos were stored with a folder for each year and sub-folders for each month whicheach  held the photos. Can I do this in iPhoto?

For example, my photos were stored with a folder for each year and sub-folders for each month whicheach  held the photos
    Why bother?
Check out the search box at the bottom of the Window. (Click on the Magnifying glass, it opens it) Now click on the mgnifying glass in the search box) and select 'Date'. Now you can find all the photos from any day, month or year. If you want to find the photos from a range - say a paticular week - then you can do that with a Smart Album.
Organising photos by date means you have to remember the date the shot was taken, and after a while, and after a few thousand shots, this gets harder and harder to do, so you spend more and more time rooting through folders.
iPhoto offers a range of organising tools and each offers more possibilites to quickly find the shot you're looking for. For instance:
I use Events simply as big buckets of Photos: Spring 08, July - Nov 06 are typical Events in my Library. I use keywords and Smart Albums extensively. I title the pics broadly.
    I keyword on a
    Who
    What
Where basis (The When is in the photos's Exif metadata). I also rate the pics on a 1 - 5 star basis.
Using this system I can find pretty much find any pic in my 45k library in a couple of seconds.
So, for example, I have a batch of pics titled 'Seattle 08' and a  typical keywording might include: John, Anne, Landscape, mountain, trees, snow. With a rating included it's so very easy to find the best pics we took at Mount Rainier.
    File -> New Smart Album
    set it to 'All"
    title contains Seattle
    keyword is mountain
    keyword is snow
    rating is 5 stars
Or, want a chronological album of John from birth to today?
    New Smart Album
    Keyword is John
Set the View options to Sort By Date Ascending
    Want only the best pics?
add Rating is greater than 4 stars
The best thing about this system is that it's dynamic. If I add 50 more pics of John  to the Library tomorrow, as I keyword and rate them they are added to the Smart Album.
In the end, organisation is about finding the pics. The point is to make locating that pic or batch of pics findable fast. This system works for me.

  • How do you manage photos if you lose the computer your iphone was synced with?

how do you manage photos if you lose the computer your iphone was synced with?

Are you talking about photos that were synced to your phone? If so, the photo sync is one-way: Computer to phone. Apple makes no provision to extract these photos from your phone, you'll have to use third-party software to do so. Note: photos synced to your phone were reduced in resolution for display on your phone, there is no way to recover their full resolution.

  • How Can I Manage Photos?

I have taken 631 photos with my iPhone. I can't seem to copy them from the phone. I can't even sync them with my computer. If I choose a folder to sync the photos to, iTunes tells me this will delete all the photos on the phone.
I'm baffled as to how you can manage photos you take on the phone. Any tips?

Phoney, you have not mentioned if you are on Windows or Mac.
On a Mac, iPhoto (and iTunes simultaneously) pops up and recognizes the iPhone. Ignore iTunes. The photos display on the iPhoto panel. Create an Event and Import Selected Photos (as you would do from a camera or SD Card).
Unmount the unit on from both iTunes and iPhoto and you're done.

  • I am getting the message: There is not enough available storage to take a photo."  How do I manage my storage?

I am getting the message: There is not enough available storage to take a photo.  You can manage your storage in Settings.  I don't know what to change without losing data, videos or photos.  What do I do?

And in general.  keep an eye on your storage in Settings => General => About.
Delete old emails when you can, especially those with attachments.  Delete old text messages, again especially those with attachments.
Dump old programs that you don't use.
Like razmee said, move pics and videos off your phone when you can.  Delete those bad pictures in your camera roll that are just taking up space.
Look for programs like PhoneClean that you can use on your computer that will go in and delete all the cruft that gets left behind by apps that don't close properly.
This will also help your phone run better as well.

  • IPhoto and multiple users - how to best manage photos across multiple users

I'm trying to fiure out the best way to setup photo storage on my new iMac.  I've been a mac user for many years but never used iPhoto, just managed the photos in the finder and dated the folder/events.  I use Photoshop and other image editing apps from time to time too.
My biggest difficulty I'm running into is both my wife an I take a lot of pictures on our phones.  We'd like to be able to access them equally but since we are set up as two diffenent users, I don't know the best way to download and access them.
Can anyone advise me if this is a good setup, or would ven work?
Move managed library to shared folder on mac so two users can access library?
    will that cause problems?
can both users add photos from their iPhones via iPhoto on their respective accounts and have the new photos show up on the other users iPhoto app?
would the newly added photos sharing be automaticall be set to the folder sharing settings?  ie, view and edit for both users?
    This brings up other questions:
if i edit the photos with say photoshop, will the changes show up in iphoto?
would timemachine back the data up automatically?
when I upgrade to a new computer will everything work the same.
I'm sure I've missed something important so any advice would be great.
    Thanks!

Many people using the Shared Folder find that they have permissions issues which mean that they 'other' user can't see some part of the Library. Therefore, if you want to share the Library in that way it's best moved to an external disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and set to ignore ownership and permissions.
can both users add photos from their iPhones via iPhoto on their respective accounts and have the new photos show up on the other users iPhoto app?
    Yes.
would the newly added photos sharing be automaticall be set to the folder sharing settings?  ie, view and edit for both users?
    Yes.
if i edit the photos with say photoshop, will the changes show up in iphoto?
If you set this up corrrectly -  You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
You will need to do this in both accounts.
would timemachine back the data up automatically?
TM can be set to back up externals. There are other options too, of course.
when I upgrade to a new computer will everything work the same.
Yes. Just plug in the extenal and point iPhoto at the external from the new machine.

    a storage

There are two separate issues you are raising:
" ... manage my storage without paying ...".  That refers to iCloud storage.  You have to pay for iCloud storage after you use 5GB.  That's not the critical issue in your case, because you need to be concerned with iPad storage - a completely different thing.
Your iPad storage is some fixed amount that is on board your iPad machine.  You already paid for it and cannot add any or pay more for additional storage even if you want to.  But this is the storage to manage right now.  Go to Settings > General > Usage and you will see how much you are using and how much you have left.  You must always keep an absolute minimum of 10% of the total space free so your software can do its operations.

  • How to Delete Entire Photo Stream in iOS 6

Here's how to delete and reset the entire Photo Stream in iOS 6.
WARNING: This will delete all 1000 photos in your Stream so make sure you're ready to do this (by backing them up).
    Delete the Photo Stream
Note: You cannot have your device hooked up to a PC or Mac during this procedure.
In Settings, select "Photos & Camera" (in the left column on iPad).
(On the right in iPad) move the slider for "My Photo Stream" to Off.
It will ask you if you want to keep or delete your photos. Choose Delete.
If you're doing this on multiple devices, make sure to complete these three steps on each device before continuing.
You have successfully turned off and deleted the Photo Stream, but you're not done. Now you need to reset the Photos app so that it won't re-download the photos from iCloud if you choose to turn Photo Stream back on.
    Reset Photos App
Launch the multi-tasking App Tray. On most devices, press the home button twice.
Remove the Photos app from the App Tray, by holding down the Photos icon until the red X appears on the icon.
Press the red X. The icon will disappear from the App Tray.
You're done! Now, you may launch the Photos app from the home screen if you wish.
Turn Photo Stream Back On (Optional)
If you want to use the Photo Stream feature for future photos, you may turn the Photo Stream feature back on.
In Settings, select "Photos & Camera" (in the left column on iPad).
(On the right in iPad) move the slider for "My Photo Stream" to On.

I haven't done it in a while but you may want to connect the phone to your Mac and open Image Capture on the Mac. I don't remember that it allows deleting by folder but if not it still would be faster than doing it one by one on the phone. The delete icon is at the lower left (red circle with line through it).

  • How to Efficiently Manage Photos Among iPhone, iCloud & iMac

I have an iPhone 5S and a late-2009 iMac running OSX Mavericks.  My on-line storage capacity limit on iCloud has been slightly exceeded and I wish to avoid unnecessarily buying more iCloud storage.  I recently went on a trip, taking many photos and quite a few videos; I suspect they are the reason I exceed my current iCloud storage capacity limit.
Can anyone recommend a preferred method for efficiently managing photos on my iPhone, iCloud storage and my iMac?  While I normally "cloud sync" (over WiFi), today I connected by lightening connector to my iMac to deliberately transfer all my iPhone photos to iPhoto.  Now safely stored on the iMac (which is backed up each day), I thought iPhoto would offer to delete the images from my iPhone, as it used to do with my Canon digital camera.  But it did not and they're still there.
Once copied to the iMac, what's the preferred way to remove the extra photos and videos from my iPhone?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

iPhoto should have prompted you after it finished the import, asking if you want to delete. It does in mine -- version 9.5.1
One way to quickly delete the photos still on your phone is to connect the phone to your Mac and open Image Capture. It allows you to select and delete photos from the camera roll without importing them via Image Capture.
