How do I manage the transferral of iTunes content from a PC to a MacAir?

I've made a real mess of my iTunes libraries.  Anyway . . .
I've had iTunes on my Asus desktop for more than three years, accumulating more than a thousand "song" titles (music of all kinds but also lectures, articles, sermons, readings), a couple of hundred movies and videos, a couple of hundred audio books, etc.
One problem is that I added to this latest iTunes library by adding files from here and there, hither and yon, not keeping all of the content actually in the iTunes subfolder.  For example, there were a hundred or more lecture files that were in C:\Users\Guy\Downloads\Audio, hundreds of music files in a subfolder in C:\Temp\iPod Transfers.
When I began to suspect my Asus desktop was going to flake out on me, I copied the entire iTunes folder onto an external hard drive (I also backed up my documents, photos, scans, etc.)   And sure enough, three nights later, my Asus stopped working.
At first, I thought I'd buy a new desktop.  But then I realized the MacBook Air 11 inch (1.3 Ghz, 4 MB RAM, 256 GB SSD, running OS X Yosemite) I bought last year, I actually use only once or twice every two to three weeks.  I thought I could use the Air to replace my old Asus.  Love the Air . . . with half the RAM of the Asus desktop and half the processor speed, the Air actually runs better than the Asus. However, it does have one BIG limitation:   a 256 GB SSD--largest I could get at the time--which is, of course, unexpandable.  So I thought I would put all the BIG stuff--videos (including movies and TV shows), music, lectures, sermons, audiobooks--on an external hard drive and "point" iTunes on the MacAir to the folder.  The current iTunes folder from the Asus desktop is about 100 GB all by itself.
I'm also finding that a lot of my audiobooks, lectures, sermons, and music were scattered about on my old Asus' hard drive and not in the iTunes folder itself (fortunately, while I was backing up other folders from my Asus, I also grabbed subfolders containing many of the music, lecture, audiobook, and video files).
I then did what the Apple bulletin said to do:  started iTunes (12.0.1.26) with the Option key pressed; clicked on "Choose iTunes Library"; then found and chose the iTunes folder on my external hard drive.  But I have "lost" much of the content.  iTunes acts as if it doesn't exist, but the files are there on the external drive.  I've even tried "adding files" and pointed to the files on the external drive.  That doesn't seem to work.   iTunes on my MacAir seems to be using the iTunes.itl file to locate stuff, but the ITL file is from the old Asus, and it is "remembering" locations on my old (and now dead) Asus.
Can this problem be fixed?
And while we're at it . . .
In the past, I installed iTunes on two other computers (I won't try to explain the complicated rationale--why I was doing this), and I found iTunes folders from those computers on other portable drives.  Is it possible to combine the contents of those iTunes media folders with the current iTunes folder on my MacAir?
If we can't deal with the latter problem, I'll not be bothered.  I really MUST get the iTunes media from my Asus available to iTunes on my MacAir.

Hi Mr Magu,
I found this trying to do the same thing with Photoshop Layers in InDesign. This Adobe forum thread helped me: https://forums.adobe.com/message/5676211 with a bit of luck it helps you too (If you're still looking for an answer, I see this is fairly old thread).

Copy the entire iTunes folder from the old computer to the new computer to move iTunes content.
As for pictures, copy them from where there are on the old computer to the new computer... this has nothing to do with iTunes.
Alternatively, if both computers are Windows based, use the Windows Easy File Transfer Utility to move everything.

I copied my iTunes music from an old computer to a new Macbook pro but it did not copy the playlists that are on my Nano. How can I copy the playlists and their content on the nano to the Macbook? If I automatically sync the nano from the Macbook, will it scrub the content and existing playlists on the nano?

You need a third-party program like one of those discussed here:

  • How do I move iTunes content from my hard drive back to the cloud?

I travel a lot for work and have been using my MBP to watch movies on the plane.  Obviously, this requires me to download them to my hard drive.  With a smaller SSD, though, I'm finding the need to free up some space.  Does anyone know how to remove a movie (or any iTunes content) from my hard drive while making it still available through iCloud streaming?

If these are iTunes purchase, you don’t move them to the cloud. They are already there.
    Just delete them in iTunes.
They will still appear in iTunes with a cloud icon.
Note if you delete a movie, you will not be able to stream it while on the plane...

It will be backed up on your computer and can later be restored to an iOS device using iTunes, if desired.  Of course, if your hard drive crashes you'll lose it if it isn't backed up somewhere else.  If you want to included it in your computer backup, it will be located at one of the following locations:
    Mac OS X: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
    Windows XP: %AppData%\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
    Windows Vista: %AppData%\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
    Windows 7: %AppData%\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

How do you download the tunes in iTunes Match in iCloud to an iPod?

I did see this yes, I also spent about 20 minutes on the phone finally with a technical support person at Apple who told me to restart and reset my phone which got rid of the few playlists I'd somehow managed to keep on my phone, and also got me off his back because I had to hang up with him to do so....useless.

  • Movies in my laptop, songs in Macmini - how do I manage the playlist?

Movies in my laptop, songs in Macmini - how do I manage the playlist in 1 computer?

You said you transfered from a USB
If you just dragged them and dropped them or added the folder they were from on the External Device Directly....
They will only play when that external is plugged in
You should delete them from iTunes - since iTunes works as short cut and doesnt hold the music in its self.
Then Move them Directly from the External to like your Music folder- create a new folder inside of it as example "USB MUSIC" and then add that to your ITunes library

You buy one and only one download.
It is your responsibility to move/copy/backup your music.
Certainly you did not update your ipod without making sure that you had transferred anything purchased on the ipod to your computer and included it in your regular backup copy of your computer.

  • I have copied my CDs into iTunes  (currently running v11) to play on my iPod.  I have now bought a non Apple mp3 player to use when I am out running.  How can I copy the many tracks I want from iTunes onto the new player?

I have copied my CDs into iTunes  (currently running v11) to play on my iPod.  I have now bought a non Apple mp3 player to use when I am out running.  How can I copy the many tracks I want from iTunes onto the new player?
    Thanks

I tried Notpod but can't get it to work.  Part of the problem, I suspect, is that I can't create a folder on my player (a SanDisk Clip+).  I also can't do this in Windows Explorer.  Whilst I can see the Clip+ in Explorer, the option to create a new folder isn't there.
The error mesag I get in Notpod is:
"Unhandled exception has occurred in your application.  If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue.  If you click Quit the application will close immediately.
InvalidArgument=Value of '0' is not valid for 'SelctedIndex'. Parameter name: SelectedIndex"
Then, when I plug the Clip+ into a USB port, iTunes thinks it is my iPad - which is because, I guess, Notpod hasn't worked.
I can drag and drop files from the Music folder where my iTunes tracks are stored onto the Clip+ and they get converted but I'd rather synchronise a Playlist from iTunes if I can.
    Thanks anyone who can help

  • How can I do to transfer all iTunes library from my Mac book Pro to Time capsule without to lost the alphabetic sequence of songs

How can I do to transfer all iTunes library from my Mac book Pro to Time capsule without to lost the alphabetic sequence of songs & artists? What is the correct way to transfer my 3000 songs to Time capsule, to free the memory of my Mac? Thanks a lot. Carlo Molinari (Rome - Italy)

How can I do to transfer all iTunes library from my Mac book Pro to Time capsule without to lost the alphabetic sequence of songs & artists? What is the correct way to transfer my 3000 songs to Time capsule, to free the memory of my Mac?
The following are the basic steps to transfer your iTunes Media folder from your MacBook Pro to the Time Capsule (TC). Note: You will leave the iTunes Library, and its associated files, on the MacBook Pro as you will only be moving the media files.
Be sure to shutdown iTunes before starting.
Next, move the "iTunes Music" folder, located in ~/Music/iTunes/, to wherever you want on your TC's internal hard drive. Remember to leave the Album Artwork folder, as well as the three individual library files where they are on the MacBook Pro.
Wait a while. If you have a large library, this will take a bit of time.
Once the iTunes Media folder has been transferred, open iTunes. Note: It will still be looking at your local iTunes Library on the MBP. As such it will think that the iTunes Media folder is still on the MBP as well. However, we just relocated it to the TC. If you attempt to select any song, you will get an error that the song is "missing." Not to worry, we will correct this in the next step.
We need to tell iTunes the media has moved to the TC's internal HDD. To change where iTunes "looks" for the media, open iTunes and go to the Advanced > General tab and use the "Change..." button to tell it where your new "iTunes Music" library is located.
Once this is done iTunes will likely pop up a progress window telling you that it's re-analyzing your library. Let it complete this step.
As a final check to make sure everything when as planned, click on any library file from within iTunes and press cmd + i (or View > Get Info). At the bottom of the Summary tab in that window is a "Where:" section that tells you the actual file path to that piece of media; be sure that path begins with the name of your TC's drive, and not "Macintosh HD."

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.  Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If you have failed to bakup, then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod: File>Transfer Purchases
