How do I manually manage music for my iPhone 4?

Hi,
I have an iPhone 4, and I am trying to manaually manage my music. I have searched all day for an answer, and frankly, I am just getting more questions than answers. I may have something simple wrong, but I am unable to manage my music manually. I know you are suppose to plug in the device and go to the summary page, but it does not give me a "manually manage" box to check at all. Also, there is no "Add to" button under the "On This iPhone" tab, nor can I just drag the music over to the device in the sidebar. What is going on? I cannot add or remove music from my device. Any advice? I would greatly appreciate it!

Ok... nevermind... I have no idea what I did, but I now have all the needed buttons. Thanks anyways!

Bought a new macbook and want to manually manage music onto my iphone 4s (as it is already full of music from old windows laptop) but when i click 'manually manage' and then 'apply' i get the message saying it will erase everything already on there. Need help please!

Before you sync your iPhone make sure that all the music that was synced to your phonereviously has been copied to your iTunes on the new MacBook Pro. Then when you connect your phone you will be able to either sync all music or select only those playlists that you want on the phone.

  • Manually managing music for iPhone

I recently upgraded my OS to Windows 7 and reinstalled iTunes. All my files and music were erased from my library. Is there any way I can manually manage music and videos for the iPhone without losing all the current content? Whenever I select "manually manage" from the summary page and press apply, it wants to sync my iPhone and erase all current files.
    If not... I hate iTunes!

Try using mediamonkey to manage it initially and there are apps out there to copy the music back.
There is a thread around here about someone who lost their itunes without a backup and explains alot about this

  • Manually manage music with new iPhone and new MacBook?

I have a new iPhone 6 that auto syncs with an old MBP iTunes library. I just got a new MBA and want to manually manage music between my new iPhone and my new computer. I don't want to transfer all of my music files onto my new MBA in efforts to save space.
I just want to keep all the music files that are currently on my phone, and have the ability to add more files as needed from my NEW MacBook.
Any help would be much appreciated!

    Hi ksatia,
If you'd like to manually manage your content, which would allow you to sync content with multiple computers, then please take a look at the information in the article linked to below.

  • I selected manually manage music for my iTouch yet it keeps trying to sync to my entire music library.  I do not want that as it is taking up too much space.  How can I stop my iTouch from continuing to try and sync so I can manually manage my music?

How do I get my iTouch to manually manage my music?  I selected manually manage, yet every time I hook my iTouch to my computer, it attempts to sync and load my entire library.  I do not want the entire library as it takes up too much space and I don't want all of those songs on my iTouch.  What am I missing?  What else can I do?

Oops, sorry, I think you probably already did what I suggested (turning off auto synch).
I have the same question - how to synch, say, just one playlist.
There is an option to synch only things that are checked. But everything (in every playlist and item, is checked and there doesn't appear to be a box to "uncheck all", nor can you check each playlist individually.

  • How do I manually manage music on my ipod with the latest version of itunes?

Very frustrating that I can't do this/figure it out. I want to drag music from my folder onto my ipod but now it makes me add it to itunes first. I don't want to. I also can;t see which songs I have on my ipod to edit them

Correction: The music on my iPod doesn't show up in the "Music" section in "iPod" in iTunes.

  • Computer crashed. Want to manually manage music without wiping iPhone.

My home computer has crashed, and I have reinstalled it completely including iTunes. When I try to manage my iPhone using iTunes I am now prompted to erase the iPhone and resync with my "new" computer. Is there any way to tell my computer and iTunes to sync with the iPhone without wiping the phone? I have some movies on the phone that were transfered as digital media copies of DVDs which I am unable to play on my computer after reformatting. I am worried that the same thing will happen to the copy on my iPhone.

Yes, I think there is. What you're talking about is force-stopping the auto sync, so you can set the iPhone to manual sync right?
I've never done this before myself, but I've heard about this before and sources say:
"While connecting the iPod to the computer, hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys in Windows (CMD + Option keys on a Mac). This will stop the iPod from auto sync’ing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 3 and 25 seconds depending on your computer."
    I got that from here: http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/faqs/answers/how-do-i-stop-the-ipod-from-auto-s yncing-when-connected-to-itunes-if-i-auto
    Maybe someone can confirm this?

  • ITunes - manually manage music no longer works

So I'm quite startled to find only a few topics about this without any resolution. Up until today after I upgraded to iTunes 11, I was always able to set my main itunes to manually manage music with my iphone and then go to ANY computer and add music to my iphone. NOW it wants to wipe my whole iphone library every time I try to apply the "manually manage music" option which would allow me to add music from any computer. I ask the community here - WHEN did this happen? Are we no longer allowed to do add music manually from any computer? WHATS the point of manually manage music (the whole point was that you didn't need to sync always with one comp)? I've tried wiping my iphone at two locations I often add music at with checking the manually manage music and everytime I wipe at one place then go to the other it wants to wipe again when I check the box to add music. I would really like to know if this is how it works now - meaning YOU NOW CAN ONLY ADD MUSIC TO YOUR IPHONE THROUGH ONE ITUNES LIBRARY. If so, I will be immediately uninstalling iTunes and finding alternatives. I appreciate any info or help. Thanks.

iPhone has traditionally only allowed manual management from a single library. Also once set up to sync, iDevices can only be switched to manual mode from the "home" library without iTunes wanting to erase the content. On any other library it will want to erase. Has your main library been rebuilt following a crash? This could lead to the symptoms you describe.
    Sync iPod/iPad/iPhone with two computers
Although it isn't possible to sync an Apple device with two different libraries it is possible to sync with the same logical library from multiple computers. Each library has an internal ID and when iTunes connects to your iPod/iPad/iPhone it compares the local ID with the one the device normally syncs with. If they are the same you can go ahead and sync...
I have my library cloned to a small 1Tb USB drive which I can take between home & work. At either location I use SyncToy 2.1 to update the local copy with the external drive. Mac users should be able to find similar tools. I can open either of the local libraries or the one on the external drive and update the media content of my iPhone. The slight exception is Photos which normally connects to a specific folder on a specific machine, although that can easily be remapped to the current library if you create a "Photos" folder inside the iTunes Media folder so that syncing the iTunes folders keeps this up to date as well. I periodically sweep my library for new files & orphans with iTunes Folder Watch just in case I make changes at one location but then overwrite the library with a newer copy from the other. Again Mac users should be able to find similar tools.
As long as your media is organised within an iTunes Music or Tunes Media folder, in turn held inside the main iTunes folder that has your library files (whether or not you let iTunes keep the media folder organised) each library can access items at the same relative path from the library folder so the library can be at different drives/paths on different machines. This solution ensures I always have adequate backups of my library and I can update my devices whenever I can connect to the same build of iTunes.
When working with an iPhone earlier builds of iTunes would remove any file not physically present in the local library, even if there was an entry for it, making manual management practically redundant on the iPhone. This behaviour has been changed but it will still only permit manual management with a library that has the correct internal ID. If you don't want to sync your library between machines on a regular basis just copy the iTunes Library.itl file from the current "home" machine to any other you want to use, then clean out the library entires and import the local content you have on that box.
Perhaps the reason you were able to add music from more than one computer in the past is that you had done something similar by accident rather than design...

  • Manually Moving Music to my iphone

I manually manage music on my iphone.  In the past, I dragged music from my library or my purchases and dropped it into my iphone.  In Sept, I purchased an album and was able to put it on my iphone, but in Nov, using the same computer, I could not.  Now when I drag music and hover over my iphone I get a red ghostbuster sign. How do I fix this so that I can continue to get my purchases onto my iphone?  Did something change in one of the updates?

Settings>Store (or iTunes & App Stores if you are running iOS6)>Apple ID. Tap your son's ID and sign out. Sign in with your ID and password.
You shouldn't lose the music, but if you try to update any apps that you bought with the family ID, you will have to use that password that is linked with that ID in order to update.
Avoid downloading past purchased content with the old ID if you can since you will associate the iPad with the old ID for 90 days and you will lock yourself out of your own, new ID for that period of time. Read more about associated devices in iTunes here.

Notes on Transferring OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks…
Most MP3 capable devices should play OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks.
If you intend to transfer OverDrive MP3 Audiobooks to an Apple® device, note the following…
iTunes® v9.0.2 (or newer) is required.
The Apple device must be formatted for use with Microsoft® Windows®.
The iTunes setting 'Manually manage music…' must be enabled for the device before you can complete the transfer. Adjust this setting in iTunes as follows…
Connect the iPod® to your computer.
If it does not launch automatically, open iTunes v9.0.2 (or newer).
In iTunes, locate the device in the left vertical navigation panel (under heading 'DEVICES'), and click the device.
    The 'Summary' screen is displayed.
Place a checkmark next to 'Manually manage music…'.
    Click the 'Apply' button.
The iTunes 'Summary' screen refreshes, and the changes are saved.
    If desired, close iTunes.
Note that if an Apple device is connected to your computer, you can choose to simultaneously transfer a title to the iTunes Library and the Apple device. If you wish to only transfer a title to the iTunes Library, you must first disconnect the Apple device

    Hi, Mrs.Frankie57.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you want to delete a song from your iOS device on iOS 7, tap Songs, swipe the song from right to left, then tap Delete. The song is deleted from iPhone, but not from your iTunes library on your Mac or PC, or from iCloud.
