How do I mask text across layers to an image at bottom layer?

I have several layers of text which I want to mask to a bottom layer, which is a moving image.
The text layers appear in sequential chronological order to make a sentence (and I need them on several layers for positioning). The first word's mask works great, but none of the other texts/masks end up showing as they are on lower layers and are being masked
I also want the masked out area to be black.
I am attaching an image which shows what I want, but imagine each word is on a different layer, show up sequentially, and are surrounded by black.

Use text animators to reveal your text. Use the text layer as a track matte for the video. All that is required is two layers.
If you insist on having each word on a separate layer, precompose your animated text layers and then use the pre-comp as an alpha track matte for your video.

There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate. You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.

How to create a part with SMD pads on top and bottom layer

I'm trying to create a part that is a printed antenna. The board will contain an array of these so I am trying to create it as a part I can place. The active element of the antenna is on the top layer and the ground part is on the bottom layer. So I need an SMD pin on top for the active element and I need an SMD pin on the bottom to connect that part to ground. But I can't seem to be able to place an SMD pad on the bottom layer. How can I do this?

I am using iMovie 09 and want to create a movie with closed-captions for a deaf person. How do I do that? I have upgraded to ML if that has any impact?!

How can I have text on top of an image?

say i want to do something like this for my site:

If you use the image as a background image on the masthead via your stylesheet, you can then place whatever you want over the top of it.

How can I retain text clarity when reducing an image?

Hi
I need to use a couple of screen shots in an e-learning course. The screen shots contain text and when I try to reduce the sizes of these images the text becomes fuzzy. I've just worked out how to reduce an image size in Photoshop. (I'm not the most proficient user; I bumble through processes when I need it.) I've used 'bicubic' and 'bicubic sharper' in the reduction process, but both produce a fuzzy appearance. Is there a way that I can reduce these images while retaining as much textual clarity as possible?
Please note that the images have not been created in Photoshop. And I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but I'm using SnagIt for my screen grabs.

Hi Trevor.
The images will be used in an e-learning course which I am creating in Articulate Storyline. I don't know if you know anything about Storyline, so I guess you could say it's like an interactive PowerPoint.
The function of these images (screen grabs) in the course will be to show users how to use the various navigational tools (e.g. click an X to exit the screen).
Personally, I don't think the clarity of the text matters for what I'm trying to achieve, but other people at my work think it does. I also think I should know how to do this for future reference.

1) You mean a font?
Knowledge, trial and error, and/or browse the various font sites to see if you can find a match.
2) The Move Tool (once text is added; see below).
3) You simply click on the document using the Type Tool, type out what you want and commit by clicking the checkmark in the options bar or by pressing Enter on your keyboard. You also use the options bar to change color, size, etc.
With the type layer active, browse using your installed fonts in the options bar. The type layer will change dynamically as you browse your fonts. (Note this is in Photoshop CC 2014; I don't believe it's in previous versions like CS6.) As I mentioned above, you probably want to find the ideal font beforehand and have it installed.

Everytime I copy and paste these images the captions which are on top of the image disappear behind

This is probably a really bad workflow that will end up biting you. I've not actually been able to copy a an image box from Quark and paste it into ID to test, so I don't know waht youare doing, exactly, but odds are you are not pasting a link to the image (doe sit show a link in ID's Links panel?). If not, you should be building this from scratch or opening the Quark file directly in ID (up to version 4 with out a plugin, later than that requires the Q2ID plugin from Markzware).

You can't convert an image into a text layer. What you can do is clip an image to a text layer so that just the image layer shows up where there is text. Create a text layer, then above it put your image layer. Hold down the alt/opt key and click between the two layers to clip them.

mouse down (and hold down) on the movieclip layer (at the left of your timeline) and slowly move the mouse up until you see that the movieclip layer is indenting to indicate it's going to be masked.

When I try the above solution I don't have a "Options" in the "Properties" toolbar.
Why would they change a process that was so simple in previous editions to such a hidden awkward process?

Try with a Brightness/Contrast adjustment layer and/or changing the blending mode.
If the effect is too much for the rest of the bulb, you may be able to mask it out.

What may be overlooked in Pages v5 is the notion of combining Text Boxes via the Menu > View > Show Arrange Tools. When you select two Text Boxes, an extra panel unfolds at the bottom of the Arrange Tools window. Uncheck one Text Box and this panel abruptly disappears.
One can achieve text flow effects between Text Boxes differently based on how one positions the Text Box overlap, and choice of effect above. Though not the accustomed flow found in Pages ’09 v4.3, flow does occur. Consider the possibilities of combining a Shape and a Text box to cut an irregular Text box.
If I create two Text Boxes and position them side by side with outline touching and choose Unite, this creates one larger Text Box and text flows across and down. On the otherhand, if I overlap the upper left corner of a lower Text Box over one above and to the left, then choose Union, pasted text fills the first Text Box and then flows across and down into the other box. Here is a Union example:
Intersect will leave a small Text Box where the two overlap, so not much value there. Subtract will cut a chunk out of one Text Box that is the size of the overlapping piece of the second Text Box:
And Intersect will leave an island in the center where the two Text Box overlap, with flow jumping over this bridge.
Clearly, this is not what we were accustomed to in the past, but with imagination, style, and layout tuning, it does offer alternative Text Box creativity and layout. Of course, there is the option of simply returning to the previous Pages version for true Text Box linking that most will want to use.

How do I copy parts of layers from one AI doc into a new AI doc and keep/create same layer names?

How do I copy PARTS of layers containing many objects from one CS5 AI (v.15.0.2) doc into a new CS5 AI doc and keep/create the same layer names?
To start with, I have one fairly complex AI document with 100 layers, with several hundred items in each layer. For example, one layer named "Stars" contains 400 separate stars (not grouped), another layer named "Crosses" contains 300 separate crosses, and a 3rd layer named "Text" contains 200 separate words (not outlined).
If I select, by marqueeing a section of the image/artboard, some (but not all) of the individual items contained in the several layers, then paste that selection into a new CS5 AI doc, I cannot get them to create new layers of the same name. Instead they go into one general layer (e.g. "Layer 101") as a jumble of discrete, but unorganized objects (no layers or sublayers). In other words, I have lost the 3 main layers from which I selected a bunch of objects.
Checking "Paste Remembers Layers" has no effect on this result. In fact "Paste Remembers Layers" does not remember layers at all. Only if I select ALL the items in the several layers will it paste those layers by those names into the new doc (or create new layers of the same names).
Of course it is a COLOSSAL waste of time copying the ENTIRE document, then pasting the WHOLE thing into the new doc (with layers retained), then deleting the parts I DON'T need, so please don't suggest that as the solution.

No Monica, nothing in Plug-ins other than the standard installed items (extensions, filters, formats, etc.). No 3rd-part clipboard extension on my computer that I'm aware of, either. All frustratingly basic. And my other CS5 Adobe programs appear to work well, at least to the extent that I am familiar with them.
So, from what I can tell of the various comments (thanks to all of you), am I correct in thinking that it seems I can't, in fact, do what all of you can do (that is, copy some objects from some layers in one doc and paste into another doc preserving those same layers by name and organization, and each containing the correct objects from each original layer)?
If so, that solves half my issue - "is it supposed to be possible to do it"; leaving just the other half - "why can't I do it too".
I'll get those screenshots made and posted later just in case I haven't adequately described the issue, or y'all haven't understood it.
