How do I migrate a new 21" iMac (2013) from an older iMac

I have a new 21" iMac 2013 and need to migrate an old iMac to it. I can't use ethernet because its behind a firewall. Only thing I can see is a USB A male to USB A male. ANy other ideas.

I found my own solution! Used an ethernet cable between the two computers!

If you are syncing using iCloud, try going to System Preferences/iCloud (computers) and checking Safari. If it is checked, try deselecting it, wait 10-15 seconds, and then check it again.

  • How do I authorize my new PC to purchase from itunes store? (it says go to Store menu and choose Authorize Computer but i don't see that option anywhere)

How do I authorize my new PC to purchase from itunes store? It prompts me to go to STORE menu, then choose Authorize this Computer (which i don't see anywhere) or Advanced (which I don't see anywhere).

There's a couple of ways to get through to the authorisation controls in the 11.0.x versions.
The control is still in the Store menu, but first (if you're using iTunes versions 11.0.x) you might need to bring up the menu bar to see the Store menu.
If you're using 11.0.x, click on the wee boxy icon up in the top-left corner of your iTunes to see the "Show Menu Bar" control, as per the following screenshot:
Then you'll find the control in the Store menu:
Alternatively, if you don't want to bring up the menu bar, it's still possible to get into the authorise controls via nested menus accessible from the wee boxy icon. Here's a screenshot of where to find them:

Copy the entire iTunes folder within the music folder on your old Mac to the music folder on your new Mac.
You can use an external hard disc for the transfer, or you can connect the computers together using Firewire Target Disc Mode as explained here:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661

  • I was given a 2010 17" MacBook Pro. I want to reset it to new and then migrate only SOME of my data from my older Mac Book Pro to the newer one. How?

A friend gave me a 17" MacBook Pro used for only one project. (Lucky me) I want to reset/register the laptop as new and need to know how to do that.
    THEN...
I need to migrate data from my older Macbook Pro to the newer one. I don't want to migrate all of the data. I have been moving data from one computer to another for 15 years and want to move only what is current and what I now need (Good-bye Quark files)--can I do that? How? Also, the older laptop is running Lion. The "new" one is running Leopard. Is that an issue? Do I need to upgrade the newer laptop to Lion first?
    Thanks.

Install or Reinstall Lion from Scratch
If possible backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion: Select Reinstall Lion and click on the Install button.
Note: You can also re-download the Lion installer by opening the App Store application. Hold down the OPTION key and click on the Purchases icon in the toolbar. You should now see an active Install button to the right of your Lion purchase entry. There are situations in which this will not work. For example, if you are already booted into the Lion you originally purchased with your Apple ID or if an instance of the Lion installer is located anywhere on your computer.
Unfortunately, Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant are set up to migrate your entire Home folder, third-party applcations and support files, and system preferences. If you use the Setup Assistant that opens the first time you boot Lion after installing, then you should migrate your Home folder, etc. This is the easiest way to do it.
Once migration is finished you can delete what you don't want.

  • Migrated to new lion iMac now excel won't save files?!

We got a new iMac with Lion installed. I used the migration tool to migrate everything from the older iMac, running Snow Leopard. Now when I work in Excel (2011) it will not let me save any files. I have checked permissions all over the place and there are no locks or passwords. I would toss the preferences file to start over, but for some reason I can't even see HD/user/preferences to go in and do that. InDesign CS5 just launches and quits, so I was going to trash the prefs for that since the other CS5 apps work, but again no folder to be found.
I have not been this frustrated with an Apple system upgrade, ever! I feel like I just bought a MS system. All of a sudden I see no system folder, no prefs folders, I am suddenly locked out of my own system and unable to take actions to fix things I have always been able to take. What gives? I need these things to work, and if I could go backwards to leopard I would but you can't.

Apple has been making their OS (and their pro apps) a lot like iMovie where they think you are a moron, and their system will never have problems so there is no need to go into the Library folder in your user folder, no need to have a Save/Revert (Final Cut Pro X eliminated this), etc.
    To show your Library folder:
    http://osxdaily.com/2011/07/22/access-user-library-folder-in-os-x-lion/
Did you update your apps? Make sure you have the latest updates, besides trashing the preferences.
BTW, I hate Safari 6, so if you have Safari 5, keep it. (They eliminated the Activity Monitor and made tabs go across the entire screen instead of being...tabs)
Apple makes their dough with iPhones and iPads, now, and they want the Mac experience to be as dumbed-down as those consumer devices. I think this is a mistake.

  • How to use Migration Assistant when trying to transfer from MacBook to a new iMac via Ethernet cable

I've been trying to transfer data from my MacBook to my new iMac via Ethernet cable and I get to the point of the transfer starting. Then on my iMac the Migration Assistant shuts down and takes me back to my desktop. Any ideas on why this keeps happening?

  • How can I migrate my itunes music and playlists from my old PC to my new macbook?

    Hi
I have a approx 250 GB of music and itunes content to move to my new macbook pro (running Lion) from my PC laptop (Windows 7)
I'd like to retain all the playlists that I have painstakingly built over the past few years but I dont want to rebuild them all manually. I'm not concerned about retaining info on play counts etc, I want to copy all the media to the mac and replicate the playlists.
None of the media is in the default itunes location (normally in Music in My Documents), the iTunes Media folder lives in another folder on my harddrive called 'Audio etc'. The majority of the music files are in various subfolders I created manually and the newest stuff lives in the iTunes Media folder (since I recently told iTunes to organise new music for me).
When I've moved my music from PC to PC I simply copied all the itunes files and copied my music to folders replicating the same file paths as per the previous computer so the playlists are looking for the music files in all the right locations. Easy.
I considered copying all the itunes library files from the pc to replace the existing itunes files on my mac and copy across all my music (not sure where to put it though).
I expect the 'migrate files' setup wizard on the mac would help me in this situation or is it cleverer that I think?
One suggestion I read was to use the consolidate function in iTunes which will copy my entire collection to the iTunes Media folder and I assume will update the file locations for the playlists and library file then some how migrate that to the mac. Only problem is my harddrive will not have nearly enough space to have duplicate copies of all that music in the iTunes Media folder and it's original location at the same time.
    Any suggestions?
I'm stupidly trying to do all this in time for a DJ gig tomorrow night but if I get desperate I'll just have to copy my music over and manually create some of my important playlists.
    Thanks
    Jon

  • Migrate to New PC and Upgrade from PSE7 to PSE9 - How do I Restore Catalog?

    Hello,
I recently bought a new PC.  To migrate, I copied all of my data files (including 50GBs of images) to the new PC HDD.  I also performed a full backup of my two PSE7 catalogs I want to migrate.
I installed PSE9 on the new machine.  When I restore from my PSE7 backup file, will it recognize the source file images already present on the HDD and only restore the catalog metadata or will the PSE9 create a new copy resulting in two copies of the same file?
    I appreciate the help.

Apologies for butting into this thread. I have a similar problem. I have just acquired a new PC and I'm trying to migrate my PSE7 program and some 15,000 images into the new PC. Unfortunately I was ignorant of the Elements Backup process and have always simply backed up my image files from Windows Explorer, as with all my other types of data, onto external drives.
I installed PSE7 onto the new desktop and dragged the image folders and contents across from a Windows Explorer window onto the blank PSE Organiser pane. PSE then imported all the images into Organiser but only a small proportion came across with their tags. No categories or sub-categories transferred with the images.
Having realised I'd done things entirely the wrong way I then started to read the Help (typical male - read the instructions AFTER you've screwed up!) I found out how to import the category/sub-category structure and have done that, but it's simply appeared as a list under the heading "Imported Keyword Tags" which isn't tidy. The bigger problem is that most of the images have lost their basic keyword tags and there are way too many to go through and re-tag!
So what's the best way out of this mess? I could perhaps delete the whole catalogue (I have just one) from the new PC's PSE7 (leaving the images still on the hard drive) and do a Back-up in PSE7 on the old PC and then attempt to "restore" this to the new PC - but will this create a second edition of all my images on the new PC's hard drive?
Do I have to go right back to square one and delete the image files from the new PC hard drive and do a full Backup on the old machine and Restore on the new one (having first deleted the Catalogue from the new PC)?

  • HT3231 How can I migrate to new Mac mini from Power Mac G5 running Mac OS X 10.4.11 (85165)?

Mac Mini's Migration Assistant requires a version of Migration Assistant on Mac G5 which isn't compatible w/ OS X 10.4.11. So Migration Assistant won't proceed with a migration. Any way around this?

  • How do I get my new Apple ID associated with an older MacBookPro so that I don't get charged more than once for a purchased app when I download it to the older computer recently upgraded to Snow Leopard?

I recently upgraded my 2 year old MacBookPro to Snow Leopard so I could download Face Time and Final Cut ProX to it.
I've already purchased the apps and installed on my iMAC and Macbook Air.
    After downloading Face Time I received the following mail;
"Your Apple ID, *************, was just used to purchase FaceTime from the App Store on a computer or device that had not previously been associated with that Apple ID.
If you made this purchase, you can disregard this email. This email was sent as a safeguard designed to protect you against unauthorised purchases.
If you did not make this purchase, we recommend that you go to iforgot.apple.com to change your password, then see Apple ID: Tips for protecting the security of your account for further assistance.
    Regards,
    Apple"
I don't want to be charged twice for these apps, especially Final Cut ProX, so how can I get the MacBookPro associated with the Apple ID I'm using now?
    Cheers

This is probably a new precaution that Apple has taken to alert folks that something has occurred with their account that has not occurred before*, namely a Mac has downloaded something from their account that has not done so before. And as the notice says, if it was you doing so, then you may safely ignore the notice. Also, do not be alarmed, Apple refers to all downloads as purchases, even when they are free.
But if you are truly concerned about the notice then you can authorize the Mac with your iTunes account, which should be the same as your MAS account. Open iTunes on the older Mac and sign into your account. Then in the Store menu choose Authorize This Computer. Now this Mac is definitely associated with your account and can now play media that you purchase from the iTunes Store as well.

  • Problem migrating to new Mac mini Server from Time Machine Backup

I sell my old Mac mini Server and after I purchase the new one (unibody). I had the Time Machine Backup but I'm not able to restore it to the new mac mini. I started it with the Server Install DVD into it and I went to Utility menu to choose "*Restore from Time Machine backup*" but it said that *it was not possible to restore the backup to this machine because its a different hardware, and suggested to use Migration*. So I restarted it and when it asked me to choose between "setting up a new server" or "transfer information from an existing server" I chose this last. In the next menu didn't appear any Time Machine backups so I mounted the time machine backup and copied the Latest hd backup to an external firewire hd and I connected it to the new one. In the migration menu list appeared my backup but there was a *yellow triangle icon* over it and the message "*Migration is not supported from servers which are configured to use dynamic network addresses. Configure the source system to have a manual network address and try again*". But how can I config a static address into my backup if I can't restore it into a machine? I don't have anymore the old mac mini to restore the backup and make any change in the configuration!
Any one can please help or give me suggestions?
    Many thanks

    I solved it!
I changed the network settings by editing /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
So I successfully restored my SL server installation, but now I have an issue with Ethernet and SD reader. See this post if you are interested:

  • How can I migrate my iTunes library, playlists, etc from XP to Windows 7?

I apologize if this has been asked and answered before.  I cannot find a relevant article with google or the
    search here on Apple support.
My iTunes library is on an external drive.  iTunes keeps a few folders in XP
    on the C: drive under
    Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Apple,
    Documents and Settings\Mike\Application Data\Apple,
    Docuemnts and Settings\Mike\Local Settings\Apple, and
    Docuemnts and Settings\Mike\Local Settings\Apple Computer.
I copied these folders to my external drive and hooked it up to my new computer
that runs Windows 7 where I had already installed a new copy of iTunes.
I tried copying the folders that were on the (XP) C: drive to my best guess as to where
they would go on the (W7) C: drive.  Microsoft being Microsoft, they cannot let
the names of anything remain the same.
I set the preferences on my W7 iTunes to point to the external drive as my library
location.  Nothing happened.  I tried restarting iTunes, but still my existing data was not
    acknowledged.
I then used the import files from folder option, using the location of the ITUNES folder
on my external drive.  This ran fairly quickly.  But, to my dismay, all my ratings were
lost and (thinking about it, not surprisingly) none of my playlists were there either.
So, does anyone have any experience on what files should be copied from XP to W7
and where?  It seems to me this should not be that difficult.  After all, the data is
    all there, right?
One article I read suggested using the iPod as a backup device to transfer the files.
Would this work?  Would it also transfter the playlists, ratings, etc?  My concern
(again based on another article I read) is that I will wind up with duplicate copies
of all the music in my music library.
(As a precaution, I have backups of my iTunes library and the (XP) C: folders on
two other external drives.  Also, the XP PC still has iTunes on it, so I could easily
reconnect the external drive there and do other stuff if necessary.
When I purchased my new iPod, it took almost 24 hours to transfter my music library
to it.  It also takes almost 24 hours to do the drive to drive backup.  (Maybe my new
computer will be faster.)  Based on this experience, I would like to avoid having the
migration of data take that long.
If the changes I made to the W7 PC need to be undone, I can easily just remove iTunes
    there and start again.
I hope my question is clear and I thank you for your time.
    Cordially, MZ
PS: The XP box is an IBM and the W7 box is a new Dell.  Both are desktop models.

You will need the iTunes Library.itl file which generally lives in ~/Music/iTunes/. You can recover this from the backups you were making before the HDD died. Otherwise, you cannot recreate the library.
