How do I migrate data from my old HDD to the new one I replaced it with?

I recently upgraded my HDD to a bigger one (160G to 500G). The old HDD still has all of my data which I would like to migrate to the new drive. I purchased a device that a tech at a computer store recommended but when I plug in the old HDD (using this device) to my Macbook pro the HDD doesn't show up in Finder! Can someone explain what's going on and what I need to do to get my data back? Thanks for all your help.

In the Utilities folder, run Disk Utility with the external disk drive connected and powered up. On the left column of DU's window there should be three devices: the first one would be the name of the new drive you installed and its size, with the volume it has (probably Macintosh HD unless you renamed it) indented below it. Next you should see the device that corresponds to your old drive, now connected via the enclosure the tech sold you; the clue to identifying it is that the name should contain "160 GB" (the size) in it. Below and indented you should see the name your old startup volume had; probably Macintosh HD unless you changed it. And below that you should see SuperDrive, which you can ignore.
If there is no external device in the list (just your new drive and SuperDrive), that means the Mac can't communicate with the external enclosure; should take it back and have the tech set it up right.
If there is a second device in the list, corresponding to your old drive, but the indented volum name under it appears grayed out, select it by clicking on the name to highlight it, click on Repair Disk, let the repairs finish and if no errors are found, click on the Mount icon on the upper bar of the window. Your old disk with all your stuff should now be accessible. If it cannot be repaired or it refuses to mount, report back with any and all messages it may show.

If your "older" MBA has a Thunderbolt port then it isn't that old. See Target Disk Mode about how it's used. Note that without a monitor you won't be able to tell from the screen when it has fully started, and if it succeeded in starting in TDM. If it did, then the hard drive should appear on the Desktop of your new computer. You can then access it to transfer your files. You can even use Migration Assistant or any backup utility to transfer data. Just don't try to transfer system files.

Migrate files from an old HDD to a new one

I'm going to switch my HDD inside my MacBook Pro and I don't know how I should get my old files to the new hard drive. I see two possibilites: I use my Time Capsule to restore the backup or I just copy the old HDD to the new one. My question is whether I can use the OS X's migration assistant to clone a bootable drive, which is connected via USB 3.0. This would be the easiest solution for me, since some folders are excluded from the backup and USB 3.0 is faster than the Ethernet of my Time Capsule. So is this possible or not?

Photos synced to your phone are not included in any iPhone backup. If you're talking about photos that were synced to your old phone, just sync them to your new phone.

You can't transfer it directly. If the old iPod is set to sync to your iTunes library on the computer, everything on the iPod is in your iTunes library. Just set up the shuffle to sync from your iTunes library as desired.
If the old iPod is set to Manually manage music, AND there are songs on the iPod that are not in your current iTunes library, please post back.

My brother and I are tired of my little sister using our apple account. When we gave her my old iPod touch i told her to tell me if she was going to purchase something but she hasn't listened to me. My brother just got a iPhone and picked up a $15 iTunes card so we had 15.03 as of last night, as of now we have 11.83 and my brother and I haven't touched iTunes or the app store. I was going to change the password but apple added a thing so you have to have alteast 1 capital letter and one # and our current password has none of those. she has her own computer in her room so we are just going to do that. is there a way that I can just plug her iPod in the computer and it will download everything on her iPod(music, apps, etc.) and it can be by apple or other software. NO, like most people I don't use iTunes like that, all my music is backed up on external hard drives and stored on DVD's, it is never all in the same place and I am not going to keep all my music on my computers hard drive and take up all the space. Now if only there was some magical amazing device that is like a laptop with a lot of storage space but only smaller that people could take anywhere to listen to all of there favorite music so they would not have to fill up there laptop or desktop's hard drive and/or drag around a computer where ever they go... oh wait, something like that already exists, it's called a #$%^*&! IPOD!!!. That is the whole point... The only place I keep most of my music on is my iPod but Apple and there infinite wisdom for some reason decided that iTunes would be the place where people would keep and manage their music and not the iPod, So since I can only sync my iPod with iTunes but CANT sync iTunes with my iPod I would be unable to do as you have suggested.

Connect the old iPad to your computer's iTunes and copy your purchases off it and over to your computer's iTunes via File > Devices > Transfer Purchases, then take a backup of it (File > Devices > Back Up) and restore that backup onto the new iPad (restoring a backup onto a different device won't copy passwords, so you will need to enter your email account passwords, router password, and any passwords stored on Safari on your new iPad).
