How do I migrate files from a power pc mac to a macbook air?

Has someone successfully migrated files from their old power pc based mac (no airport card) to a macbook air? If so, please explain step-by-step instructions how to do this w/ wired connection method.  I know that the newer macbook air only has USB 2.0 ports.  What simple connector and adaptors would I need to accomplish this task? My old or source computer is a mac mini w/ the latest 10.4.11 OS that it can run.  Thank you.

Your cloning idea is a good one, however he can use Setup Assistant to migrate rather than Migration Assistant. Pondini has written an elegant article on how to effectively use it  in Setup Assistant tips. If the OP clones and uses Setup Assistant his transition should be seamless. He may have applications that are not designed to run on Snow Leopard so I'd recommend only migrating his data and manually installing Applications once he has determined the ones he has on his PPC machine will run on Snow Leopard. If they will not then he has the option to update individual apps.

I have a "GDrive slim" portable USB drive attached to my iMac desktop and so my time machine is backing up all my files regularly.  How do I transfer the contents of the portable drive to my new macbook air?

Use the Migration Assistant on the MacBook Air to migrate from the backup. If you've already set it up, doing this will create a new user account.

A FW cable would be far faster & Easier, but with Ethernet you need a compatible version of Migration Assistant running on both Macs.

  • How do i transfer files from external hd to new hd in macbook pro

Hi Totally new to upgrading Mac.  I Backed up my hd to a an external hd. Upgraded my hd to 1tb. How do I make the transfer? The new hd does show in disk utility. Do I have to format this hd? Really not sure what to do next. Thanks

Format the new 1TB internal drive 1 partition, Option: GUID, Format: OS X Extended Journaled, give it a name and click Apply.
Then head to Erase and move the slider one notch to the right, then click erase and come back in a few hours.
What this will do is write zero's to the whole hard drive and then it reads it back and if the driver can't read a sector of data, it's mapped off never to be written to again.
This is a lenghtly process, but has the benefit of your precious data being placed on perfectly working magnetic sectors and reduces a lot of issues later on down the road.
Once that is finished, quit Disk Utility and install OS X using your AppleID and password on a reliable, fast, Internet connection (preferably via Ethernet cable)
Once that is done, reboot and setup. If your backup is TimeMachine or bootable clone, then hook that up first and reboot again so Setup Assistant see's it and you can use that to transfer your programs and accounts/files over.
If you want to start brand new, with no contamination of older programs, then install programs fresh first from original sources (best actually) and then manually transfer personal files from backup checking to see what they are.
If the account names are different, then drop the files into the DropBox folder of your new account's Public folder, this way the permissions and whatnot will change.
When you use Migration or Setup Assistant, it copies all your crap and unwanted history along for the ride.
Some like a clean start on a new machine, leaving sins of the past behind them.

  • How do I move files from a portable hard drive to my MacBook Pro?

Hope someone can help with this. I recently got myself a MacBook Pro and I'm having problems transferring files from my old Windows XP based laptop. I downloaded the Windows Migration Assistant onto my old laptop but everytime I tried to run it I got various error messages telling me I needed to upgrade this and that. Now the laptop has decided to give in totally and won't switch on at all! I do have all my music etc backed up onto an external hard drive but when I connect it to my MacBook it just doesn't want to know, I assume as all the data on there is formatted as Windows. Has anyone got any tips about what I can do if anything next? Thanks

You should be able to read the external drive. Go to Finder and see if your external drive appears in "Devices". If it appears, press it and migrate the files you want
Thank you so much for your advice, I was panicking there for a moment thinking that I'd have to start from scratch! You are an absolutr STAR!

  • Is there a way to migrate files from 10.4.11 to a new Macbook Pro?

I want to buy a new Macbook pro, and want to transfer important files from my old iBook G4.  The folks at our Apple Store tell me I cannot migrate data from 10.4.11 to the new operating system.  Is there any way to do it?

    Hello,
A new MacBook Pro may not allow the same applications to be installed (if they are PPC specific applications)
Other applications will be updated to the current release.
The easiest way for you to transfer your personal files (not applications) is to use a USB pen drive or USB external drive.
Copy all your content to the USB drive and then from your USB drive to your MacBook Pro.
There are other ways to do this without a USB drive.
If your on the same wireless network you could setup file share between the two Macs and then copy files from one to another. (I've done this between my MacBook Pro and PowerBook) then it would be a simple case of dragging files from your iBook to your MacBook Pro over the same network.
You could use a cross over Ethernet cable and run a cable between the two macs.
Your new MacBook Pro may need an thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter to do that.
USB Drive would be easier and they don't cost a lot.
    Best of luck

  • After migrating files from PC to my Mac...

I used the Migration Assistant and transferred some files from my PC (windows 8) to my MBP running mountain lion.
I see it automatically created a new User, so I'm assuming the files are there.. But I can't access the new user! It asks me to make a new pass and when I do, the screen kind of "vibrates", which means it didn't work. I restarted my laptop at least twice and also tried resetting the new user's pass from my own.. nothing works. Has this happened to anyone else? Can I fix it?

In a new user account. If desired, log in with it and move the files to /Users/Shared/, or drag them to the desktop and authenticate yourself.

  • How can you share files from saved on your mac os to windows?

I recently added Windows 7 Ultimate into my MacBook Pro just a few days ago using Bootcamp. I'm just wondering if I can share my files, like any videos, documents, or such things, saved in my MacIntosh drive (or wherever I saved my things into) and somehow open it back up in my Windows. Is it possible? And, how can you do it if it is?

When transferring a project from one computer to another,to stop errors such as these, its essential to ensure that the project is copied with all the files and folders in exactly the same locations. Also before opening the project on the new computer, you need to set up a new project and set all the preferences to be exactly the same as on the first computer. Then when you open the project, premiere will find all the files in all the right places. Even then you may need to re-link some files. Just follow the prompts when Premiere asks "Where is file...."
We use USB hard drives to store students projects on and they are used on many different computers without problems, as the preferences are all set to be the same.
