How do I migrate from a 2008 MacBook Pro without a video screen to a 2014 Macbook Pro?

Use your backup drive instead. No backup drive, then get a monitor and connect it to your computer. Or take the whole shebang to the Apple Store for help with the transfer. Or you can remove the drive from the old MBP and put it in an external enclosure.

  • HT1338 How do I migrate from G5 iMac (PPC) 10.4.11 to a new Intel iMac?

I am running OSX Tiger 10.4.11 on an iMac G5 PowerPC from 2006. If I upgrade my hardware to a brand new Intel iMac running Mountain Lion as I am considering, how do I best migrate from my old machine to the new, problem free?
I believe that I can't upgrade beyond 10.4.11 on my G5 as it isn't supported so my problem is a dual upgrade/migration one!
I'm also aware that I can't run PPC software on an Intel Mac but I'm really having trouble getting my head around the problem of such a large, combined hardware and OS upgrade! HELP - what do I need to do?? Simple explantions only please!
PS - Apologies if this aimed at the wrong community or it is not presented correctly - it's my first post!
    Many thanks,
    Len57

Thanks Mende1; I know that PPC apps won't function on Intel machines but I can migrate the Universal apps, right? There is such a large gap between Tiger and Mountain Lion - can I still migrate files directly from one to the other taking the Universal apps as well? Sorry, I'm not very computer savvy!

  • How to transfer/migrate from Late 2008 MacBook Pro to MacBook Pro, with retina?

Is there anyway of directly connecting a Late 2008 MacBook Pro to a MacBook Pro, with retina, in a Target Disk Mode way without having to wait for the magical adapter in July?
Should I go to the Apple Store, buy a normal MacBook Pro, use it to do the transfer, and return it?
Thanks to anyone for taking the time to answer.

There is Setup Assistant when you first boot the new Mac, over wireless it's supposed to migrate for you, however I hear it can take hours and days to complete.

Another faster method would be to use the free/donations Carbon Copy Cloner the old Mac to a blank USB3, 2,1 drive, then hook it up to the new Mac and use Setup Assistant (or Migration Assistant) that way, it will think it's another Mac.
You can also simply drag and drop files into a same named account on the new machine manually from the clone.
It should take about a hour per 250GB to clone, about another hour for Setup Assistant.
Over wireless it could take a eternity.

  • Migrating from 2007 Mac Book running 10.4.11 to new Mac Book Pro

Applecare is about to expire on my trusty 13" MacBook. I have been reading these forums to help me decide on a new laptop and will probably get a 13" MacBook Pro since I only do e-mail, internet and some home video editing with iDVD but want something faster. I would rather get a cheaper model and replace more often.
I have been lazy and have not upgraded OS for a long time. Am I going to run into any problems using Migration Assistant to move from my old 10.4.11 to the latest Snow Leopard? I really do not want to do a clean install if I can help it. I have a FW drive so I can keep a bootable back-up of my old HD just in case as I transition. TIA for help. I tried search but couldn't find exactly what I need.

    Jean,
Yes do use MA however don't use it until you have started up the new machine and run it for a few hours. Part of the installation process it will ask you if you are switching from an old Mac, at this point say no and let you installation continue. By doing this your migration will go faster and also ensure your new machine is running fine. Also because your old machine used Firewire 400 & the new machines use Firewire 800 you will need a cable like this. Once you are happy the new machine is running OK, run Migration Assistant and follow the on screen instructions.
    Regards,
    Roger

How to get photos from iPhoto back onto a SD card. I have a MacBook Pro with built in SD card slot. I have tried "Export" but this does not work.

It's best to export the photos to a folder and then drag the folder onto the memory card.  Memory cards are usually formatted for PCs, FAT 32, which doesn't permit more than a limited number of files in the root directory. Putting the photos in a folder gets around that limitation.

  • How do I migrate from my old mac that lost its display to my new mac?

How do I migrate from my old iMac that lost its display to my new iMac?

That can depend on what model iMac is the old one. With some models it's relatively easy to remove the hard drive. once out, you can use a device like this:
Newer Technology Universal Drive Adapter USB 3.0 - connects any 2.5", 3.5" or 5.25" drive
to connect the old drive to the new Mac. It will show up exactly as if you had an external hard drive in an enclosure. Them you can access the drive.
Can you give us an idea of what iMac variant the old one represents? The are four broad families: G3; G5: G5, and Intel. You can usually find the processor information the same tag that has the serial number.
I believe that, if you enter its serial number in tis Apple web page:
    https://selfsolve.apple.com/agreementWarrantyDynamic.do
it will give you a description of the computer with the pertinent information.

You can try using Screen Sharing in the Sharing preferences. Or try a third-party utility such as ScreenRecycler.

I have an iPhone 3GS that I dropped in water for a moment. After drying it and everything, it still does everything but get service. Can I back it up and transfer its data to a new iPhone 3GS? I heard something about how loading a backup from a water damaged phone could mess up the new one... is this true? I would truly appreciate the help, please let me know, thanks!

Sounds like your phone is in recovery mode.  In this case, all data on it is gone.  There's nothing to back up.

Thanks for the information!  My sister gave me the MBP for my daughter with Leopard installed.  I purchased Snow Leopard and installed it, then my daughter purchased Lion.  So I do have all the installers.  If iWork wasn't included with any of those, I guess my sister purchased it while running Leopard.  I'll have to contact her.  Thanks again.
