How do I monitor download speed?

I have been using the Activity Monitor to view download speed. Is there a better method of doing this?
Problem I am having is downloading Xcode which has taken over 24 hours and then the .dmg file was 'not recognized' whatever that means. After wasting all of that time I determined that my download speed was about 56 KB/sec which is probably slower than dial-up. I am on a wireless DSL AT&T modem which should download in the 500 KB/sec range.
Today (Saturday) AT&T is not taking my calls after being transferred to Mac tech support thus this post. During the call to AT&T the voice said it was going to run some 'diagnostics' and the download speed jumped to 125 KB/sec, still not good enough. Download time for Xcode did drop to approx 7 hours which is some help.
Any help will be appreciated.

Well, I don't do wifi and from what I've read, it can be extremely flaky, as is DSL from AT&T which I dumped seven years ago for cable.

Check the Internet speed to confirm it is what it is supposed to be by going to www.speedtest.net
On the ATV, try Settings > General > Reset.

I've just upgraded my internet access and am curious as to what my current download speed is. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to find this out. Can anyone help? Is there something in the OS that would indicate this information? Is there a widget or freeware utility that would tell me? A quick search at Apple Downloads turned up nothing.

How do you monitor internet speeds in Snow Leopard?

I use an Apple Airport Extreme to connect wirelessly to the internet. It is connected to a Thomson modem (TG585 V7). I've recently switched ISP's and am in the process of an upgrade to ADSL2 and I want to be able to check my internet speeds to make sure I'm getting what I'm paying for. The thing is, I don't know how to check on the speeds. If I was connected directly to the modem, I "think" I could check the modem stats (or so I've been told), but that's not the case.
SO - does anyone know how to check internet up/down speeds using Snow Leopard?

A few things.
This speed test tool gives you the results in both bits and bytes (bottom of the page) so you don't have to convert.

Second, the Airport channel probably won't have much effect unless your signal is really bad. The reason is that your local wireless connection has a much higher capacity than your modem connection. The local network is usually not the bottleneck, your connection to the Internet is.
Also, my Airport base station has an "Automatic" option so that it picks the channel with the best signal. You could leave it on that.
Finally, you can monitor network throughput in real time by using your Activity Monitor and clicking the Network tab. You'll see Data received/sec and Data sent/sec.

All my previous routers have allowed me to monitor my connection speeds however I can't find this in this router. I found the client table under "status" but I have not been able to find the connection speeds anywhere. I like to make sure that my devices are running at close to 300Mbps and not 54Mbps in case I have a connection setup wrong. I have searched in the forums without much luck. Thanks.

This isn't a function of your Mac; it's either your ISP or your router that is causing slow performance.
Make certain that you really are using a wired - only connection. Turn off AirPort to be sure.
Try resetting your router. If that doesn't fix things complain to your ISP. They will want you to connect a computer directly to your modem and run whatever speed testing software they use. Their responsibility ends with the equipment they provide.

I hate the new downloads-in-a-tab scheme. This was an unnecessary change in my book (if it aint broke, don't "fix it").
So in order to get it back, I performed the about:config browser.download.useToolkitUI change, but now all I get is a blank download window that pops up every time I download something.
Is there something else that I need to do? I've checked the change and it was saved, but it didn't resolve my issue as much as it just caused me a new issue.

As jules says, your rate (currently at least) may be slow.
If it used to be good I wonder is your ISP is slowing ('throttling') your speed after you've used so many GB of a quota each day or month - check what they think you should be getting as a download speed.
While Apple's servers do occasionally play up, it's generally the ISP being slow not Apple.
If you're using Google's DNS servers that has caused issues for some.
Recommended speeds for near instant playback:
SD         2.5Mbps
720p      6 Mbps
1080p    8 Mbps
Is your speed test from somewhere like speedtest.net?
It might be helpful to post Mbps to ensure we/you are not confusing speeds by using different units to those measured.

How to increase the camera download speed and save binary file speed

My camera is pco dimax S1 camea. The interface is cameralink Base.
The memory is on board.
I use 1000fps@480*480 resolution to capture 1 sec.
Then download the images from the on board memory to computer.
The board in the PC side is NI-1429 board.
Theory, the cameralink transport speed should be 250MB/S
In the file format, file size should be (480(H)*480(V)*16bit*1000fps)/8=460.8 MB
Logically it should be download complete under 2 sec
But in my program, the real download speed at about 40 framess/s, (480*480*16*40)/8=18.432 MB/S
(250MB/S)/(18.432MB/S)= 13.85
The download speed is totally slower 13.8 times.
I use the SSD and RAID 0 to save the file.
I did some test as below:
1. Try to save png or binary file. The speed of binary had a litter faster, but it still doesn't close the 250MB/S.
2. I try to adjust the resolution from 16bit to 12bit or 8bit to save the image. The download speed still 40 frames/s(18.432MB/S)
3. I try to use IMAQ Sequence to save the file, but how to add in my program, can anyone help me?
On the other hand, I also guess may be the structure of my program have an problem cause the download and save speed slow.

You have to separate your step1 and step2 into two parallel loop.
If you put the two tasks in one loop, the lower speed task will affect the loop speed.
So that the program won't achieve the top speed.
Is continuous acquisition required for your application? Can sequence acquisition or finite acquisition be your workaround?
The memory handling in continuous acquisition is way a lot more difficult than finite acquisition.
I would suggest you to figure out how finite acquisition work and then jump into the continuous acquisition application.

If you have Flash CC you also have Flash Pro CS6 in your CC membership. You can always use the old bandwidth simulator there.
Otherwise I fear it's going to come down to controls outside the Adobe realm. Either use software like NetBalancer (free version available) to limit bandwidth to a process. Other techniques like throttling a whole ethernet card or limiting bandwidth from a router perspective, etc.
You will need to attach to a process with the mentioned software so you sort of need a stub loader that waits to load your actual content until you're ready so you have time to point the software at the correct process. A PITA but possible.
