How do I monitor serial port activity without first sending a command?

In my application I am sending a command through the serial interface and I want to monitor the response. The response is not instant, in fact it is a timeout response indicating the requested action did not work. How do I monitor so I can parse what is coming in over the serial port without necessarily sending a command?

You can always place a loop where you monitor the number of bytes at the serial port.
After configuring your VISA serial port session, you can create a Property Node to get the number of bytes available at serial port.
You can then process this information, for instance:
1. Establish a timeout because you never get a response.
2. Do serial port read if there is data available.
You can exit the loop with a timeout condition or having processed the data.

I made a program. It can read datas via serial port. But the datas wont came all the time, so the other part of the program not need to run. Hi Zoyo, if you use the VISA- VIs, the functionyou need is "VISA Bytes at serial port". It shows, how many Bytes are available in the input buffer. You can find it here:

Building a diagnostic tool to monitor serial port events

Hi,
I'm writing a diagnostic tool. I have two Windows machines communicating via serial ports. I need to treat the software on both machines as "black boxes." I would like to peek at both the sent and received data at one machine and save to a file without emptying the buffers.
Does have LabVIEW have access to these data? Can we look at it without emptying buffers?

You can access to the data you like by wiring from the sent or
received data
bufferd line. But, cabablity of this way quite depends on the data
sampling rate
because the monitor is the most time consuming process on LV.
As I've experienced, you can do it in less than 100Hz rate per one data.
And saving to a file may be done after some interval repeatedly. The
files are
better smaller sized ones, so the data is to be storaged in a couple
of data files.
As for more practical method, i have to know your diagnostic tool in
detail

How do I process serial port strings as bits

In response to my commands, my instrument is sending bytes to my serial
port. In one instance, 2 bytes are received. I want to treat these 2 bytes
as a group of 16 bits.
The VISA and Compatibility Serial functions return these bytes from the
serial port to Labview clearly labelled a "string".
Everything I can find in the way of Labview functions and .vis don't want to
do bit twiddling, bit swapping, and bit dropping, with "string" data.
I thought "hex string to number" could be used here, but I can't find a way.
The 2 Bytes in question can be represented as hex, but the data are not the
ASCII codes for the hex representation of a binary number, they are the
binary number. This "hex string to number" seems to want ASCII c
odes.
You can feed a hex number typed into a "control" box wired into "hex string
to number" and you get a meaningful number. You can feed the 2 bytes from
the serial port into an "indicator" set to read in hex and you get a hex
number that is a correct representation. But that is Labview handing them
around to itself. I need to get my "hands" on them.
I can't feed those same bytes that show up as a correct hex representation
in an indicator into the "hex string to number" or anything else, so far,
and get a number that is useful for further processing.
I thought "variant to data", but I can't find enough reference material to
understand how to use it. A boolean array seems like a bit of a weird
approach, so I thought I'd ask before I looked into that.
I'm used to dealing directly with binary numbers on the processor stack, I
call them whatever I want, and turn them into anything I feel like.
I'm sure I'm staring the solution in the face, but I can't find any way to
persuade
Labview to treat this "string" data as 16 bits.
I've got the 16 bits, which is better than not having them, but I don't have
much hair left.

duh, well I finally discovered the "Unflatten from String" function. A guy
just feeds in the bytes he's collected from his serial port that Labview
thinks are a "string", and out come lovely little unsigned 16 bit numbers,
or whatever other type of number he wants to turn the bytes into. And there
are great little bit twiddlers available after that, like "swap bytes", and
you can mask out bits with the logic operators, why this is fun. There's
nothing like being a moron...... fly me to the moon...................

How to take CameraLink serial port into use in VC6+MFC?

I'm trying to use the CameraLink serial port.
Developing environment is VC6 + MFC.
Serial port controlling functions reside in CLSERNAT.DLL. clsernat.h is included in the project.
Following code is used for accessing tjhe functions in DLL.

I'm a C++Builder programmer, the borland's c++ syntax is quite diferent but I think I can help you.
1- You could import the file CLSERNAT.lib in your project (in the VC enviroment), in this way you don't have to load the library yourself and you can use the funtion in your source code.
2- If you have to load the library yourself define pointer to the function in the DLL
typedef void __stdcall (*TFunctionInDll)(void*);
Load the Dll:
int IdentDLL = (int)LoadLibrary("CLSERNAT.DLL");
do the typecast
TFunctionInDll FunctionInDll= (TFunctionInDll)GetProcAddress((HINSTANCE)IdentLib,"clSerialCLose");
and call the function the usual way
FunctionInDll(NULL);
The typedef definition must be with the same parameters of the function in the
dll.

CRIO serial port activation

I was working & connected a gyro through serial port of cRIO 9022. I could see "visa//192.168.20.1::instr" in the drop down of VISA resource name. From this moring, I am not able to see that drop down! I tried restarting, reconnecting. It did not help. How can I make it visible(detect) again. What may be the problem?

This is an old post, and I almost missed the reply, but I'll see if I can help.
As you have experience with Hyperterminal, have you plugged the serial port of the cRIO into hyperterminal, and see if anything is actually be transmitted?
Does the LCD have a microcontroller that interprets the serial commands?
If so, do these commands have to have an explicity baud rate or termination character?
Consider looking at this example as a guide for troubleshooting:

Z87-GD65 - how to make E2200 network port active in S5 system power state?

My question is how do I make the E2200 network port active in the S5 system power state on the MSI Z87-GD65 motherboard?
I require Wake on LAN (magic packet) for my computer but after shutdown the network port is inactive hence the WOL packet can not wake the computer. I have checked and activated the following items:
On the motherboard
- EuP 2013 = disabled
- Resume by PCI-E device = enabled
In Windows 8.1 E2200 network port settings
- Wake on Magic Packet = enabled
- Energy efficient network = disabled
After I shutdown (power state S5) the network port activity lights go dark so I assume the port has shutdown as well. On my previous Gigabyte motherboard the network port stayed active allowing WOL packets to be transmitted to turn on the pc. Have I missed a setting on this new motherboard? My workmate also bought the same motherboard and has the same issue.

MSI support responded and listed the correct settings and it is working!
So the correct settings are:
In the motherboard BIOS:
- LAN Option ROM = Enabled
- EuP 2013 = Disabled
- Resume by PCI-E device = Enabled
In Windows 8.1 E2200 network port settings:
Under Power Management:
- Allow this device to wake the computer = ON
- Only allow a magic packet to wake the computer = ON
Under Advanced:
- Energy Efficient Ethernet = Disabled
- Shutdown Wake Up = Enabled
- Wake on Magic Packet = Enabled
All working fine now. All I was missing was the "Shutdown Wake Up" setting. I hope this helps anyone else who has this excellent motherboard.

How do I use serial port read and show text, but not have it scroll off screen?

I am new-ish/returning amateur user of Labview and I am trying to edit the example VI "Advanced serial write and read VI" that is part of dev suite 2012. I need to use the string box to show ALL text received from serial port, always appending and only rolls off screen when more real data arrives at serial port.
What is actually happening is as more bytes (or no bytes AT ALL!) arrive during read time, current text rolls off the string box. Even when 0 bytes are received, screen is blanked out.  I am not very familiar with functions locations and even worse at understanding obscure references to functions, so please keep replies very basic so I can follow.
Just to be clear, I need the string window to behave like hyperterm does-always shows data and it is not pushed out of window arbitrarily.

OK- lets start back at the beginning. I have a few questions...
WHy does incoming txt get placed at top of txt box and then scroll up?  why would it make more sense to input at the bottom and scroll toward the top. I have created this huge txt box that appears to be impossible to use.

I know that accessing serial port is not possible on firmware 2.x for non jailbroken iPhones.
But what about firmware 3.0?
Apple has focused firmware 3.0 on accessories, through bluetooth or through serial port. So, accessing serial port should be possible.
But I can't find any documentation / sample code for that.

Assistance in How to Communicate to Serial Port

Hello, I am designing an Interface to communicate with RFID Device. My problem is that I cannot seem to get the data sent to loop back and be displayed back to a textbox that I have setup. The serial port pins 2 and 3 have been connected with jumper
wire so as to allow the data to transmit and return back. I have followed the example from an online source called "Simple Serial". Yet, everything seems to work except for the data return (received). Any assistance on the matter would be greatly
appreciated. My apologies, I neglected to mention that I am using C# 5.0 in Visual Studio 2013 Ultimate.

Not correctly reading serial port data after first cycle

I set up a VI for serial communication using RS232 with a pressure transducer meter. The pressure readings are in a loop along with a series of calculations in that loop. The readout from the first cycle is correct, but i just see garbage characters on every subsequent cycle. The VI was running fine when the loop was just reading the pressure data and not performing any calculations. What could be the reason for this discrepancy.
The OS is windows NT and software is Labview 6.1

I am using a VISA. The bytes at serial port are fixed, that is for a particular command the response number of bytes is fixed. The read operation in the first cycle (of a loop) is correct but it reads garbage characters for every other cycle. I am using a 9600 baud rate and the meter responds directly in strings, no handshake is used.
