How do I move a referenced library to new  MBP?

I have a 500GB external drive containing scanned files of slides I inherited from my dad. (photos he took from 1940 - 2005).
I created an Aperture referenced library that works when I attached that external drive.
I'd like to move the files to a larger drive so that it can also hold my other Aperture and iPhoto libraries.
Can I safely move the original/referenced image files to a larger 2TB ext drive and retain the Aperture links etc?
What issues will this likely cause in Aperture? How do I avoid or correct such issues?
I have also just purchased a 2014 Macbook Pro 15, with the most current version of Mavericks and Aperture software.
The Aperture library was created on my 2009 MBP running OS 10.8 (not Mavericks)
Can I just drag and drop the existing Aperture library from the old MBP to the new  MBP? -  even though they use different OS?
Thanks in advance for any step by step guidance or advice.

The most secure method of moving Referenced Originals is to do this using Aperture.  Select all the Images whose Originals you want to more, and run "File ▹ Relocate Originals", selecting the new drive as the destination.  Be careful with the settings in the Relocate dialog.  500 GB of date will take hours to move.
You should be able to copy the Library to your new machine and run it.  Once opened, you may not be able to open that copy of your Library on your old machine (and you may have to wait many minutes for Aperture to close the Library the first time you close it).
Do each of your two tasks (moving Library, moving Referenced Originals) separately, and confirm the success of the move prior to doing the second.
What you are doing is straight-forward.  Just make a complete back-up of both your Library and your Referenced Originals before you do anything, and don't delete or over-write them until you have confirmed that the Library works correctly and that the Referenced Originals are where you want them to be and are correctly linked to the Images in your Library.

  • How do I move my Itunes library to new computer?

I have a new computer and two Iphones and one Itouch. One Itunes account.
I have a new computer running windows vista. I have most of my library on my older iphone but when i connected it to my new computer only some songs where transfered. When I go to sync my Iphone it says that the iphone is synced with another computer. I still have the old computer but want to sell it and already have a buyer.
I have a new Iphone plus the existing one and I also have an Itouch. I want to have the ability to have all my music on the new computer and to have the ability to connect both Iphones and the Itouch to the same computer. Each one would be able to load music from the same library. I also have two laptops which have itunes loaded. I know you can have up to 5 computers on one account and I have not exceeded that.
If possible, if there is a solution can you really dumb down (simplify) the solution.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Probably the most straightforward way to get iTunes onto your new computer is to network the two over ethernet and copy your iTunes folder across. This works fine if you have been using iTunes to completely manage your music and all your songs are in iTunes Music not in different folders. If the songs in your library are not all in the iTunes Music folder you can consolidate them. When you consolidate, any songs in the iTunes Library that are not in the iTunes Music Folder are copied to the Music Folder and the Library is updated to point to those new files. Files already in the iTunes Music Folder have no changes made to them:
Copying all your iTunes files to one location - Mac
OS X 10.5 - Connecting two Mac computers using Ethernet
Another way is to put your original computer into target disk mode and copy the data over Firewire: How to use FireWire target disk mode
Copying the whole folder brings with it the iTunes Music folder and also the iTunes Library (iTunes Library.itl in Windows) database file which holds all the information about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). You'll get more information including the Folder/File structure in this article: What are the iTunes library files?
When you copy the iTunes folder make sure you put it into the same location on the new computer. This has to be the exact same place, on a Mac this would be in Username/Music/. Everything has to be exactly the same on the new computer including the Mac user account name. When you open iTunes on the new computer it will be the same as on the original one Songs, Playlists, Play Counts, Ratings etc. You should also use the same version of iTunes on both computers.
If you have any iTunes purchases in your library don't forget that you'll need to authorise your new computer to play them: About iTunes Music Store Authorisation and Deauthorisation

How can I move my iTunes library to my new MBA?
I also plan on purchasing a new iPhone in the next month or so.  Can I move my songs from my iPod to that too?

Easy. Copy it from the old Mac to the new one.
There are a variety of techniques including Setup Assistant (as soon as you get your new MacBook Air, it will ask you if you want to transfer information from another computer), Migration Assistant (if you elect to transfer information later), enabling file sharing between the two computers, or copying your music to a flash drive or other storage device followed by importing it to iTunes.

Once your music library and everything else you want to transfer from the MacBook Pro resides on the new MBA, sync your iPod to the MBA. Sync the iPhone too when you get it, and they will both have identical iTunes music libraries.

    Hi FWFFP,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!
The article below will explain how to get music onto your new computer.  I'd personally recommend the option of copying the iTunes library from your current computer to an external drive, because it creates a backup for you as well:

Connect an external disk, go to My Music folder and copy iTunes folder to your external disk. Then, connect the external drive to your new computer, copy iTunes to My Music and open iTunes. If your library doesn't appear after opening the application, open iTunes holding Shift key and go to the folder with your library

How can I move my iPhoto Library from one Mac to another without losing the comments on the individual photos in the process? The source Macbook (OS 10.4.11 and iPhoto 6.0.6 (3.2.2.)) is with my husband in Germany, the target MacBook Pro (OS 10.8.5, iPhoto 11) is with me in Japan. Thanks for your help.

I copied the iPhoto Library to a CD and from there to the new MacBook
If you copied the library to the CD via the Finder it would be no different than the methods Terence suggested.  If you used the Share ➙ Burn menu option from inside iDVD you'll get a mini library that has to be accessed from the open library and the events/alubums copied into the destination library.  Not the same as the other methods.
The Share ➙ Burn method is no longer supported with iPhoto 9 and later.

If you are doing an upgrade on the same Mac, just leave it where it is. When you do the upgrade, as long as it is not a "clean install" (wipe everything and start over), you should not lose any files.
If you are moving it to another Mac, move it to the same location in your user account on the other Mac. For example, no matter which Mac I'm on, the iPhoto library is always in Home/Pictures/iPhoto Library.

  • How can i move my Iphoto library to an external hard drive?

How do I move my Iphoto library to an external hard drive?

    Here's a worflow for that:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using  iPhoto Library Manager

  • How can I move my iPhoto Library from my MacBook Pro to my iMac or hard drive??

How can I move my iPhoto Library from my MacBook Pro to my iMac or to my external hard drive? 'Help' is not helping!!

    To move to another machine:
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
To move to an external disk:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
