How do I move a user's sparse image BACK into the correct folder

Please help if you can!
I accidentally moved the sparse image connected to my administrator account into the 'shared' folder. (I was trying to confirm shared settings between users, and inadvertently moved the file.) There were no error messages or warnings, the file moved easily into the shared folder.
After it was moved, I was unable to login to that user's desktop, and the only explanation is "...because there was an error." The only thing I can think of is that it's because of the moved sparse image for that user.
But, I can't move it back. The computer won't allow me to move the file, and when I try to copy it to the appropriate folder I get an error message that there is not enough disk space. I tried creating a new administrator account, but that didn't work. I've tried changing the file-sharing settings, but nothing I've thought of doing has worked. I've tried turning off Fire Vault for that user, but I can't seem to do it from a different user account.
If you have any ideas of how I could log into this user account, I would be very, very grateful. It's my main desktop, and I need access to the files located there!
Please help!!

Dear jsd2 and William,
Thank you both so much for your help. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate both of you taking the time to help me figure out this problem.
William - The Library folder was basically empty. It had some Quicktime preferences in it, but nothing else. The Terminal didn't even recognize it, and I actually couldn't delete through Terminal, but simply sent it to the trash. Even so, I couldn't log in the user account.
jsd2 - I was able to log in as root and had no problems opening the sparseimage. I then copied all of the data to an external HD. Once that was finished I verified the sparseimage mounted disk, but there were no problems found. Even so, I repaired disk, but still no problems found. Even so, I couldn't log into the user account. I did get to the point where it asked for the master FireVault password (by entering the wrong password 3 or 4 times). It accepted the master password, but then it wouldn't let me change the password and login (the master password only led me to a new-password screen).
So, after verifying that ALL of my data was safely on the external HD (including music, pictures, mailboxes, files, etc...), I deleted the user account and home folder for the account I was locked out of. Then, I created a new account, and manually transfered the necessary files back into the user folder. Then, I restarted my computer and breathed a huge sigh of relief when my wallpaper came up on the screen. About 98% of my settings are in tact. All music, pictures, files, and e-mails survived. Although I have to re-ad the actual e-mail accounts, all of the other account settings are there.
I will leave the copied files on the external HD for at least a few days or a week to make sure nothing important is missing, then I will set up Time Machine and start making regular backups.
So, thank again, both of you, for your invaluable help, which led to a successful, if somewhat roundabout, solution to this problem.
Also, jsd2, I don't remember if I turned Fire Vault off when I upgraded or not. It seems to me that the directions said I should, and in which case I would have - but the upgrade wasn't recent, so I don't really remember. (Or rather - clearly I didn't, if what you say is true.) At the moment, FireVault is off for all accounts on this computer. I want to turn it back on, but, to be honest, I'm really scared to now....Since I don't know what caused the problem in the first place, I'm leery that if the problem hasn't been fixed I might end up in the same situation again. Although I hadn't had any problems before today, and I know that I must have done something in the 'sharing' settings that created the problem.

how do i move songs that are in separate albums into the same album?

Of course it should, but if it doesn't do you want fix it or leave it broken? iTunes draws on the CDDB database for track details. That database is incomplete, contains errors, and isn't explicitly designed to be "iTunes friendly". If you download an album from the iTunes store then the tracks should normally be grouped together, although there are ways of sorting the Songs view that will always break things up. If you purchase from Amazon, elsewhere, or rip your CDs then you may sometimes need to make a minor update to the tags to tidy things up. Which workaroud is needed depends on context, but the most common one of setting an Album Artist takes a few seconds.

    SOLUTION
Open "terminal" on your mac and type the following:
    defaults write com.apple.mail IgnoreSortOrderWhenSelectingAfterDelete 1
(copy and past the whole line)
This will stop that behaviour in mail.
It works on most opperating systems.
    mine is.

  • I recently rebuilt my iphoto 09 library and now all the pics are in one folder instead of events.  How do I get 20,000 pics back into the correct events?

I recently rebuilt my iphoto 09 library and now all the pics are in one folder instead of events.  How do I get 20,000 pics back into the correct events?
I have a macbook pro Version 8.1.2 and I am using Iphoto 09
I rebuilt library because many pics were black and now they are in one folder labeled "Recovered"

Do you have the original iPhoto Library (before you rebuilt it)?
If so, I suggest you rebuild it using iPhoto Library Manager, a program you can download. It does a better job of rebuilding. It also leaves your original intact and makes the rebuilt Library a new file (package).
If you don't have the original (say, from a backup), then you should probably first back up the library that you have before trying anything.
After making a backup of it, look along the left side, you will see Events and Photos. Is there anything in either of those areas?
If not, it sounds like all your photos were recovered and put in Recovered during the rebuild. iPhoto Library Manager might do a better job with this. In any case, if there are no photos in Events or in Photos, try selecting ~ 5 photos in Recovered and drag them to Photos. Do they then show up there with the correct dates? Do they also show up in Events after doing that? I am suggesting just a few photos before you try it with 20,000.
If the photos inside your "recovered" area are also in Photos, then don't do the above steps. I'm not sure I can help you if your 20,000 photos are in Photos but not Events. I'd try iPhoto Library Manager instead with its better rebuild.
If the 5 photos experiment works, then I would try it with ~ 200 photos at a time, going through your entire collection. You'll need to do this about 10 times if you really have 20,000 photos. Remember, don't do this if the "recovered" photos are already in "Photos."

  • How do I move a song that didn't go into the compilation album?

I have gone into the info about the song and changed the info about sorting/grouping but it still won't move into the album.  How do I do that?

    Hi blossom a,
You have the right idea, great job so far. Sometimes, iTunes may separate songs based on the data stored within the file:
There are three reasons why songs from the same album may not be grouped together
    - The album names of the songs may differ slightly
    - The songs from the same album may have different artists
    - Not all songs in the album have the same "Album Artist" assigned to it
I imagine that there is a peice of the "Get Info" screen that we are missing, maybe the "Part of a compilation" checkbox on the Info tab? The following article may provide a resolution to your issue.:
Why aren't songs with the same album art grouped together?

  • How to take pix out of a slideshow and back into a simple folder in iPhoto?

I was only experimenting with slideshows and now have 61 photos in a slideshow which I want to revert back to a simple folder of pictures. I do not want those pictures in a slideshow.
How can I get all of the 62 pictures in that slideshow to revert back to 61 photos in a regular folder in iPhoto '08?
I guess I should have duplicated the folder of 61 photos before I made it into a slideshow. Then I could have just deleted the slideshow. Yes or no?

    Lorna:
You can reduce the number of Events by creating Smart Albums with criteria that you would like to have the photos grouped by. If you'd like the events to be by year and month, set the smart album's criteria to be Date is in the Range 01/month/year to 30/month/year. Then select the contents of that SA and use the Events->Create Event menu item to create an event with those photos. Then change the date to the next month and do the same. You can use any criteria you want for the SA but Events are time based and work better that way.

  • How do you move a user account to a different drive?

I recently bought a Mac Pro and installed a second hard drive. The plan is to have the boot drive contain the Opperating system and priogram files and have all user accounts and documents on the second drive.
How do I move my user account (which is currently on the boot drive) to my secondary drive?

This used to be done using NetInfo Manager, but that's not part of Leopard. I assume you're running Leopard since you've just bought the Mac Pro.
In Leopard, location of home directory is controlled by System Preferences -> Accounts. Select the user in the list and control-click to bring up "Advanced Options..."
Choose the directory on your second drive which corresponds to the one in "Users" that you copied. Don't change any of the other things.
By the way, it's always a good idea to have an extra admin account with home directory on the boot drive. That way, if something goes wrong with your second drive, you can still log in. As the admin, you can correct problems with your "primary" or "main" account.

  • Lost emails, how to get them back from the Mail folder?

    Hi there.
I have a folder called +/Previous System+ inside of this folder there was folders of the system I had before.
Inside there is the Applications folder, and I deleted the old versions of the applications such as Mail, but when I did this, I lost the preferences and the email accounts, the Mail application opened as new, without any account, I still have all the folders and .mbox files under ~[User]/Library/Mail but I don't know how to make the accounts visible in Mail
Question 1: How can I retrieve my sent and received emails.
Also the accounts that I had were POP and today I learned that the hosting provider suggests IMAP, so now I'm confused.
Question 2: What should I do? if I get the accounts back will be POP or should I create IMAP accounts and try to retrieve the emails there?
    Thanks!

Before I had an iPod all my music was in the My Music folder. When I started using an iPod and iTunes I left all my music in the My Music folder. I have been reading how to back up or move my music and I see my setup is not a good one.
I want to correct my setup by getting all my music into the iTunes folder. How do I do this the right way? Once I do this will all my music, art, play lists, and ratings be together so they all get backed up and/or can be move to an external drive?
My Music folder is about 60 gb and the free space on my hard drive is about 17 gb.

  • How do I move itunes library from my ipad back to my itunes library in my windows computer ?

How do I move itunes library from my ipad back to my itunes library in my windows computer ? All the songs got transfered by mistake from my windows itunes library to my ipad. All i had wanted to do was to move a select # of songs newly purchased from my ipad to my ipod but I got mixed up. Before i knew it all teh library had been moved to my ipad?  HELP!

You don't have to move the songs back into iTunes if you don't want to, the songs are still in iTunes on your computer - you just copied a version of the songs onto the iPad from iTunes.
If you want to remove them from the device itself, just swipe across the song while you are in song list mode in the music app and a red delete button will pop up. You can also tap and hold down on a playlist or a album icon and the X to delete will pop up. It will not work for Genius playlists.
You can also connect the iPad to the computer, launch iTunes, select the iPad on the left side, click on the Music Tab on the right, uncheck all of the music that you want to remove, click on Apply in the lower right corner of iTunes, and that will remove the songs from the iPad.

I have bought a new Mac Book Pro, and I need to know how I can move Aperture from my old Mac Book to the new one..

    It begins with: F-285-NER-151-QBQ-and continues with 5 more 3 or 4 letters/numbers..
Yes, that is the number. And what version of Aperture have you installed? The same version as on your old Mac?
But it don´t work on my new Mac...
In what way does it not work? Does it require you to enter a licence number for Aperture 2 as well? That will be necessary, if your serial number is an upgrade serial number. Then you will have to enter all previous numbers as well.
Or does Aperture not accept the number as correct? Then check the spelling; some letters are easily confused like "I" and "1" and "O" and "0". Do not use the number pad to enter the numbers.
