How do i move files from mac mini to external hard drive

how do i move files from mac mini to external hard drive

The simplest method would be to drag & drop the files you want to move to the external drive using the Finder. Just open both the source and destination locations in separate Finder windows.

Disk Utility can make a bootable copy of OS X onto a properly formatted External HD, but I prefer to use Carbon Copy Cloner because it is easier. Plus not only can you boot from the clone if you run into trouble, but you can continue to use it as part of your normal backup strategy.

  • Moving files from mac mini to external hard drive

I am trying to move some files off an iMac onto a FREECOM HDD. (external Hardrive) When I attempt to drag the files off the mac into the hardrive window, I get the error message:
"File" could not be moved because " FREECOM HDD "cannot be modified
This is also the case with a Mac mini that I have. Files can be dragged off the hardrive into a finder window but not the other way round. This is frustrating as I can move files between PC laptop and hardrive without any error messages.
Im guessing that my permissions on mac systems are read only, but I dont know how to change them. Im desperate to get some old photos off the iMac onto the hardrive and would really appreciate any suggestions.
    Thanks kindly

    Hi
I installed the NTFS-3G drive on my mac mini. It has worked, i can now transfer files to the hardrive.
Im still having trouble with my iMac.
NTFS-3G drive requires minimum requirements of mac osx 10.4 operating system. Unfortunatley my G4 iMac is running Panther, version 10.3
I tried installing Tiger, version 10.5 off the install discs but got the following message:
"Mac os x cannot be installed on this computer
This software cannot be installed on this computer"
how can i solve this problem?
    Many, many thanks

  • How to transfer large files from macbook pro to External Hard Drive?

I want to transfer a file from my Mac to an external hard drive, it says "The item “File name” can’t be copied because it is too large for the volume's format."
I am trapped, if there is any way you could suggest me to overcome this problem I will be grateful.

I may be wrong, but I believe the format has something to do with it - note the sizes here (from the Help in Disk Utility on how to format a drive for Windows):

How do I move files from my desktop to a flash drive?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Open a Finder window by pressing the Finder icon in the Dock, and choose the flash drive in the Finder sidebar, under "Devices". Then, drag the file from the Desktop to the Finder window, so it will be copied to the flash drive.
Note that the file won't be copied if your flash drive is formatted in NTFS, so you will have to install an application like Paragon NTFS or you will have to format the flash drive in a different filesystem

You export them: File -> Export

Or if you want to, you can keep the images in iPhoto and move the Library to an external:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

  • How can i move my Iphoto library to an external hard drive?

How do I move my Iphoto library to an external hard drive?

    Here's a worflow for that:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using  iPhoto Library Manager

  • Can I bring files from a NTFS formatted external hard drive (from Windows XP 32 bit desktop) to my new macbook pro retina?

Can I bring files from a NTFS formatted external hard drive (from Windows XP 32 bit desktop) to my new macbook pro retina?

What are these files you are trying to copy over?
If they are program specific and there is no program on a Mac to read them then you'll have to find either a Mac version of that program or one that does the same thing and can read those files.
The file extension should not change just because you connect a NTFS formatted drive to a Mac computer. A Word Document is still a .doc/.docx ad the same for all other office type programs. Music files with an extension of .MP3, or whatever, should read the same on both system. Same goes for all other files like images with a .JPG extension.
    Yes I would network them.
I would not use Migration Assistant. There is nothing on your Windows PC that can be used on the Mac other than your personal data files. No programs or settings can be carried over from Windows to OS X.

Also, when I view the files from the external hard drive, they show up as .nbz and are not recognized by any program on the Mac. Should I just abandon the hard drive option and start sharing files through the LAN approach?

  • How do you move your iphoto library to an external hard drive--step by step because I dont even know the basics--Help!

I have no more space on my hard drive and my computer keeps freezing.  I would like to move my 10,000 photos from IPHOTO to an external hard drive but dont know how to do it.  I am reading answers to similiar questions but dont know how to do even the simplest instructions like "after you quit Iphoto how do you copy the iphoto library from our pictures folder to the external disk????"  Ugghhh I have no idea how to do this.  Please help a busy mom of three who sits here for an hour and just spins her wheels!!!

Make sure the external drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled), quit iPhoto, drag the iPhoto library to the external drive, depress the option key, launch iPhoto and use the select library command to select the iPhoto library on the external drive
Fully test the library. Once you are sure it is totally ok delete the old library - test one more time prior to emptying the trash
Check and make sure that your backup system is backing up yor external drive

  • Can i use windows migration assistant to transfer files from my windows formatted external hard drive to my mac?

I have a windows formatted external hard drive and a macbook pro. I was wondering if i could use the windows migration assistant to transfer files from my external hard drive to the mac

    No.
Just connect the drive to your Mac. The Mac can read most Windows formats (it cannot WRITE Windows New Technology File System (NTFS) formatted drives.

  • Opening files from an old PC external hard drive on Mac?

Is there a way to make it so that my old PC external harddrive can be opened on mac? I don't want to reformat it because then I would lose all of the data, but I would like to be able to open the pictures inside and maybe even transfer it to another external hard drive that is mac compatible.
If I can't do this then how are old PC users who have converted to Mac dealt with this compatibility problem?

Yes, there are apps like PARAGON for NTFS drives
The easy way is to purchase another HD, theyre cheap as dirt
OR offload all that data onto your PC, THEN format the HD for EXFAT so that both PC and Mac and read and write to the HD
recommend against using application route for reading from a "PC" format NTFS ext. HD.
as said HD are cheap as dirt, consider getting another and formatting it for BOTH PC and Mac

  • How do I move my iTunes Music to an external hard drive? Please help!

I bought an external hard drive and moved the iTunes Music folder from my local hard drive to the external hard drive and now the iTunes library appears empty. I moved all my music back into the local hard drive and the libarary is now full full of music again. How can I move all the files to the external drive and have iTunes retrieve the music from there?
    Thanks!
    Paula

This article tells you the proper way to move your music:
iTunes: Moving your iTunes Music folder
After a successful move, always connect your external disk, before running iTunes.
Failing to do so will iTunes cause to reset the 'iTunes Music folder location'.
That means your next ripped CDs will be stored on your internal disk.
If that happens, just set the proper location again in the preferences.
    Hope this helps.
