How do I move music from iPod back to my computer w/reformatted hard drive?

My computer was malfunctioning and required a reinstallation of the OS. Doing so overwrote my iTunes library. Now the only place the library exists is on my iPod. Is there any way for me to transfer the library back to my computer? Thanks.

P.C. Instructions
Plug your iPod into your computer. Make sure that disk use is enabled. (enable it in iTunes on the main iPod screen; if you manually manage your music, then it is already enabled.) Go to my computer. First, right-click your iPod. Then, select Tools ® Folder Options. This takes you to Control Panel ® Folder Options. Select the View tab. Under "Hidden files and folders," change "Do not show hidden files and folders" to "Show hidden files and folders." Click Apply to All Folders, and now all the invisible files on your iPod will be visible.
To get to your music files, navigate to iPod_Control\Music (meaning click on the iPod drive in My Computer). There you will find a series of folders starting with a letter and ending with a number. Congratulations! You are now looking at your iPod database, where all your music files are kept. As with any other file, you can now copy your music to anywhere on your computer.
On a MAC
Launch the Terminal.application and type:
find /Volumes/[iPod'sNAME]/iPod_Control/Music -print | awk '¬ { gsub(/ /, "\ "); print }'
Substitute the name of your iPod for [iPod'sNAME]. Any spaces should be replaced with underscores (_). This will print a list of all the songs inside the Music folder with \ in place of spaces. Then, simply copy the location to the song you want and type open followed by that location to begin playing that song. You can then use a standard copy command such as cp to copy any file you select to its new location. This is tedious though. To copy your entire iPod's entire Music folder to your local computer, simply open the Terminal and write:
%ditto /Volumes/[iPod'sNAME]/iPod_Control/Music/ ~/Music/iPodTunes/
Again, substitute your iPod's name for [iPod'sNAME], using an underscore for any spaces in the name. This will copy the entire contents of your iPod's Music folder into a new folder inside your home directory's Music folder called iPodTunes.

  • How do I Move Music from iPod Nano(2nd Gen) to Computer with Windows Vista?

I just got a new computer due to my old computer crashing so I'd like to transfer my music from my iPod Nano 2nd Generation to my new computer so I'll have a backup. I followed the directions listed below but they didn't work. Is it possible that it didn't work because I'm using Windows Vista? Is there anything else I can try?
    1 - Open iTunes
    2 - Edit=>Preferences=>’Advanced/General’ tab
2a --- Select ‘Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library’: checked
2b --- Select ‘Keep iTunes Music folder organized’: checked
2c --- Click OK to store changes
3 - Attach your iPod to the PC and hold down the ‘Shift+Ctrl’ keys until the iPod is fully recognized (this will defeat the auto-sync process)
4 - If you get a dialog box to link the Library, decline this option
5 - Within iTunes: Edit=>Preferences=>’iPod’ tab: switch iPod to ‘Manually manage songs & playlists’ – click ‘OK’
    6 – Eject iPod
7 – Close iTunes, then reopen iTunes and attach the iPod (it’s in manual sync now)
    8 – File=>Add Folder
9 - Browse to and open ‘My Computer’ (click on the ‘+’) and select the iPod (or the lower ‘\iPod_Control’ sub-folder)
    10 - Click OK

All of the following programs should work with Vista.
Yamipod. This is a free program that transfers music from iPod back to the computer. However, it does not transfer playcounts/ratings etc.
Another free program is Pod Player.
    SharePod is also freeware.

How do you move music from itunes in a XP computer to an iPhone 5?

You copy the content of your iTunes Library to the iPhone by connecting to the iPhone to your computer, using the USB lead that came wiht the phone, and allowing iTunes and the iPhone to Sync with one another.
This will leave the content in your iTunes Library. An iPhone (or iPod) is not desinged to be the only location for your music (or other content). The idea is that the iPhone (or iPod) has a copy of the Library.

  • How do I move music from iPOD to iTunes music library

How do you move music that was once on your iTunes music library that is now ONLY on your iPOD back to the music library. I want to do this so that I can burn a CD. Maybe there is an easier way??? Please help!

If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:

iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)

There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • PC hard disk replaced. How do I get music from iPod back onto PC

My pc hard disk crashed. I replaced it and reinstalled Windows XP. I have lost all the music I had on my laptop. I don't want to reload from CD's again and I don't want to loose the music I downloaded.
Can I get the music from my iPod mini back onto my computer and if so, how?

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button: Managing content manually on iPod
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I lost my hard drive and want to get my music back on my new computer. How can I get songs from my ipod to my computer? I am afraid to sync it and losing what is on my ipod. Any help would be appreciated.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion.
Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup, not good, then you can transfer itunes purchases from your ipod:  File>Transfer Purchases

just happened to me last week... you clicked Yes, right? unless you've backed up your music (or held onto your old computer), you're kinda screwed. If you HAVE done either of these, open it back up, save EVERYTHING to a new playlist, and send it to your AppleID... I found this out too late, and I just spent the last 6 days re-importing every single CD I own.....
Good luck - I know it's devastating, I feel your pain!

  • How do I move pictures from my MacBook Pro to a USB/External Hard drive?

I can't figure out how to trasfer pictures and files from my MacBook Pro to my USB hard drive. Help please?

We could use a little more information, are you trying to move from a folder to an external drive? Or are you moving from IPhoto.
Either way should be able to select the pictures you want and drag them to your external.
If you have not used the drive before you may need to format the external drive with Disk Utility. You will need to choose a catalog method and what you choose should depend on if you plan to use a Mac only, or Mac and PC.

  • How do I move files from a broken Mac Book to an external hard drive

I have a broken MacBook pro, the hard drive failed and I want to move the files onto an external hard drive.  I know I can transfer the files onto the external hard drive by running the software on the external hard drive and accessing the files on the Mac Book, but I dont know how to do it.

How can you do that if the drive has failed? You cannot access a failed drive unless it is actually still functioning.
To access from an external drive you need to install the operating system on the external drive then boot the computer from the external drive. You can then access the internal drive in order to copy files and folders from it to the external drive.
