Can anyone tell me how to save/transfer all of the music from my 30GB iPod onto my desk top computer (Mac mini)? I would like a safe method, least likely to lose any of the music.

The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. One last thing, if you have been using your iPod with another computer and it is set to update automatically then you need to take care connecting to a new iTunes. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘ Apple) keys. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and it will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that way you can continue to use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using most of the utilities listed above your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod
Whichever retrieval method you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

No Apple supported way, they do not allow music out of the iPod for copyright reasons, but there are several programs you can run on your PC to copy the iPod contents to the PC. Check on the iLounge site for a lot of helpful information and links to the software you will need.

How you delete depends how you have your iPod set to update. If you are updating automatically then delete the files from the iTunes library and next time you connect they will automatically be deleted from your iPod. if you are updating manually, connect your iPod and click on the icon when it shows in the iTunes source list. Find the files on your iPod that you want to remove, highlight them and delete directly. To select multiple items such as all the songs in an album, click on the first track in the list hold down the shift key and click on the last track to highlight the selection. Then press the delete key.
To summarise, you start by highlighting the song/video/selection in either the iTunes library or on the iPod then press the delete key on your keyboard.

The iphone is not a backup/storage device. The sync is one way - computer to iphone. The only exception is itunes purchases. File>Devices>Transfer Purchases
It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion.

Use the backup of your computer and put the songs back on. If these are iTunes songs you can download them again on your computer and sync the nano.

My 40gb can be played but Itunes says it is corrupt. I want to get the music off the Ipod onto my new computer, old computer died which had all the data on it (crap on my behalf I know) Anyone know how to do this?

My hard drive is corrupt even though I can listen to the music on the Ipod. Itunes says it is corrupt so obviously cannot read it properly. You can hear the disk reader resetting every few seconds preventing the data recovery.
We can see the track listings and playlists which we used for our wedding in 2005 and desperately want them back.
Sadly we lost the hard drive that had Itunes on it with all our music which we dont have a back up of.

They don't have the music on their computer so they cannot transfer the iTunes folder, from the computer to their iPod and then to the new computer. And if they try to enable disk use on the iPod it will erase all the music that is on it. The method you cited is moving the files in a data format using the iPod as a flash drive. It doesn't work if they are in music format. That is why I suggested Yamipod.

So here's the deal, I have been using my parents apple ID ever since I bought my first apple product. I have a TON of music stored up on their apple ID (Both cd's and iTunes music). I just got my own apple ID and have successfully transferred my music to my iPod touch. How can I move that music to my new macbook? The macbook is authorized for my parents apple ID and I can download the music that I bought from the iTunes store, but the problem is that I can't move the stuff originally from CD's. Most of the CD's are already trashed, lost, forgotten, and the only copy I have left is on my parents iTunes.

Recently I downloaded the new Itunes(Itunes 7). After downloading it I was prompted to upgrade my Ipod (30g Video) to the new system (1.2). Almost immediatly after finishing this download my Ipod turned off, and is now frozen and will not turn on. Also, my computer doesn't recognize when my Ipod is plugged in, nor does the "Do not disconnect" screen come up, my Ipod stays blank. I called Apple they told me that I can send in my Ipod for it to be fixed, but the hard drive on the Ipod will be wiped. I recently bought a new computer and do not have any of my songs in my library, this is over 2000 (2000 + dollars) songs I have bought that I am currently on the verge of losing.
I have tried various USB ports, two different computers, restarting my Ipod, talking to apple technichal support, putting my Ipod into disk mode, manually trying to get the compter to recognize the Ipod through the manager, and smashing on my desk out of anger hoping that something might happen (just kdding). I believe thats everything, any other ideas you have are greatly appreciated. I have tried the 5 r's.
If anybody has any ideas on how can get my computer to recognize the Ipod is plugged in so I can back up all the songs (via my computer, ipod...copy all music files) would be greatly appreciated, that way when I send in my Ipod and then get it back, I can put my songs back on.
If there is apparently no way to get my computer to recognize I plugged in my ipod, all i need to know is any way whatsoever to get all my songs off my Ipod before sending it in for repairs and apple deltes all my songs?

Without putting too fine a point on it, I take that to mean you had a lot of music on your iPod that was not stored in iTunes on your computer, and quite a bit of that music you do not own via online sales or on its original media. No judgment here, but live by the sword, die by the sword.
In the digital age one of the unsung benefits of owning a proper license for your media content is the ability to restore or replace those digital files in device failure -- and devices alway fail one way or another sooner or later.
It sounds like your firmware update failed. If Apple repairs your iPod without replacing or reformatting the hard drive you'll get everything back. Unfortunately the assumption here is that all data on the iPod is mirrored on the host computer -- not much is done to preserve iPod data. You can take your iPod to an Apple Store and ask the Genius if there is any way to restore your iPod to operational condition, even temporarily, so that you can back up the data. The answer will probably be no, that it is beyond the capability of Apple's Genius and/or repair service.
You can if you wish send the iPod to a data recovery service. It's a standard hard drive in that iPod, and if it's just the logic circuitry of the iPod that is broken, due to failed firmware update or other defect, they can connect that hard drive to another host and most likely recover the data. This will be expensive and it will void your warranty. By the time you pay for expedited shipping, data recovery services and a new iPod, you're approaching such a cost that you might be better off having the iPod repaired or replaced under warranty and then buying your former music collection. I would say, buying again, but that might not be exactly the right choice of words.
Good luck. Despite my sarcasm I really do understand your frustration -- I've lost important data before -- and the suggestions I offer for a solution are sincere. I'm afraid however that you're going to have to chalk this up to lesson learned.
