Welcome to the Apple community.
All you need to do is enable contacts in system preferences > iCloud on your Mac. Once you do this a sync will commence and your contacts application will be populated with your contacts from iCloud.

Going to give it a go. Had a back up of all my clients files stupidly not my software as I have the originals disks. This should be as easy as it is with calender items, but the only solution I've found is to change your default contact group, and email the contact to yourself. Then tap the contact, and add it to your contact list. You can then delete the original. Is there an easier way???

Well, you can go into setting>mail, contacts, calendars>add new account or through iTunes you can plug your phone into your computer, open iTunes, select your device, then select info. I hope this helps. Au revoir!

I have a large archive of emails in Thunderbird on my XP Vaio laptop. How do I shift them all to my new Mac Book Air? I tried following the instructions, which sent me to this section:

First, be sure that the contacts on the devices are in the "icloud" section and not the "On my iPhone" (or iPad) section of the contact listings/groups.
Missing contacts:
Here's a test to perform - using a computer's browser, log into icloud.com and go to the Contacts page. If most of them are gone, then they are gone.
If they show up, then the problem is that your device is not connecting to the Contacts database on icloud.
On the device, go to Settings>icloud. Be sure icloud is on and using the right ID. If not, scroll to the bottom of the page and tap Delete Account - this just disconnects the device from that account, no data is lost. Then log back in using the correct ID. ALSO - be sure the Contacts are turned on (on the same screen).
Note: Contacts are not part of an iCloud backup, since they are part of contacts database on iCloud's servers. So performing a restore will not help.

Then they have been deleted. There are many reasons for this. One possibility is that someone else is using the same iCloud account (family member, etc.) and they deleted contacts, thinking they did want them on THEIR device. How to get them back? Unfortunately, an iCloud backup does not include any of the sync databases, like contacts, notes, calendars, reminders, etc. because the data is already stored in these databases. Your only hope for restoring the data is if you had that data on a computer (like a mac's Contacts, Calendars, etc.) and that data was backed up using whatever backup software you typically use (e.g. Time Machine on a mac). Just restore the data files back to the computer. Other than that, I'm afraid the data is gone.

The depending on how many contacts you have, you may have to email them to your self and upload them using drag and drop one at a time. You do this by opening the contact on your phone, tap Share a Contact on bottom right, tap Email, send to your self, drag and drop attachment to icloud.com contacts as before. It shouldn't have any problem importing individual contacts in this way. If you have lots of them, the you may have to consider purchasing 3rd party software such as Touch Copy which can access the contacts on your phone directly, allowing you to drag and drop them as individual vCards to a desktop folder all at once, where in turn you can drag and drop them to icloud.com all at once.

It sounds like you would like to move a contact from one group to another. You can do this by dragging the contact from one group to the other and then deleting the contact from the original group.
Use the steps below to achieve this:
Add contacts to a group
Click All Contacts.
Drag one or more contacts from the All Contacts list to another group on the left.
You can add a contact to more than one group.
To select several adjacent contacts, click the first one, then Shift-click the last one. To select multiple nonadjacent contacts, Command-click them on a Mac or Control-click them on a Windows computer.

Step 1 above says to select All Contacts, but you can also drag a contact from another group. Once you have added the contact to the appropriate group, you can remove it from the previous group by following these steps:
Remove a contact from a group
Select the group the contact belongs to. If you don’t see your groups, click the Groups button.
Choose Edit > Remove From Group. The contact is removed from the group but stays in Contacts.

I find I cannot move a contact from one group to another group. If I delete a contact from one group I delete that contact from my total contact population. I did not have this problem in earlier IOS versions. Can anyone help me?

I will definitely get them all moved over before I delete that account and I've already gone in & changed my preferences. Several years ago, my husband I decided to share one calendar and one contacts list, using his mobile me account and it's been great for us. I'm particularly thrilled to no longer serve as a human rolodex and I guess that I paniced a bit when I thought there might be a problem with our system. I'm still confused where that "On my mac" account came from on the first place. Do you suppose that was an automatic thing that came with the Mountain Lion upgrade?
