How do I move my Home folder to an external drive?

I am leaving for 3 months.  I want to copy the entire Home folder on my iMac to an external drive so I can take it with me.  I want to clean up the files/folders, sort and delete thousands of iPhoto pictures, organize hundreds of genealogy documents, etc., using my MBPr.  When I return home, I want to replace the old Home folder with the cleaned up one.  I thought I could simply drag and drop the Home folder to the external drive (2 TB) but twice now I get these two dialogue boxes mid-way.  After the second, the copy window disappears and copying stops.  A shadow of the Home folder is on the external drive, but nothing else.  Can this be done?  How?  Thanks!

1, Yes. Making a partition for the clone is what you want to do if you want a bootable clone.
2, If you want a bootable clone, you do not want to create disk image.
3, Dragging and dropping will not get all of the files the was cloning software will. Using drag & drop uses more superficial commands then the cloning software uses. So that is is not able to get everything.
The next two link are a couple of site that explain how to set up SD to clone a disk.

  • How can I move the passwords folder on a external drive?

    Hello!
    I have a simple question:
I do not want the passwords and filled forms data stored on my computer but rather on a flash drive. So, when I am done with the computer, I unplug the flash drive and take all sensitive data with me.
How can I do it? How can I change the default location C:\Documents and Settings\sun\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles to the flash drive?

That preference does not exist by default. Right-click in the about:config window and choose New > String, set it name to '''browser.cache.disk.parent_directory''' and value to where you want the cache. (Note there is an underscore in the name)

I currently have the back up on a Time Capsule, I want to move it from the Time Capsule to another external hard drive.

Did you read the link to the Pondidni website?  You will have to select the Time Machine HDD for the new MBP and the old one in System Preferences>Time Machine:

  • Is it possible to install my home folder on an external drive?

I need to hand my MacBook in for repair, but I don't want any of my documents on it when it goes in to the repair shop. I have full Time Machine back-ups of the entire laptop, but is there any way I can install my home folder on an external drive so that while my laptop is being repaired I can continue working as usual with my external hard drive plugged in to another (older, smaller hard drive) laptop?

Get an empty external drive properly formatted. Get Carbon Copy Cloner 4.0 and use it to backup your Home folder to this external drive. Create a new admin user account and turn off auto login if it is enabled. Reboot the computer and sign into the new user account. Delete your user account.

  • How do I move my home folder to secondary drive in ML?

    Hello,
I've tried a bunch of methods I found by searching but they all appear to only be for Lion. It was basically moving the folder while logged in from another admin account, and repointing to the new location from System Preferences. Everytime I try, I log back into a new profile. The reason to do this is because I installed a SSD and replaced the optical drive with the original hard drive in a 2012 15" MBP. I'd like to keep my home folder on the secondary (original) HDD.
    Thanks

Use backup software such as Carbon Copy Cloner 3.5.2 to copy the /Home/ folder to your secondary drive. Do not yet delete anything from your primary drive. Open Users & Groups preferences, click on the lock icon and authenticate. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on your account entry in the list and select Advanced Options from the context menu.
Click on the Choose button to the right of the field labeled, "Home dir:". Navigate in the File browser to your /Home/ folder on the secondary drive. Select the Home folder itself then click on the Open button. You must Restart immediately. After restart you will boot from the primary disk but be using the Home folder located on the secondary disk.
Once you know it is working you can remove the contents of the folders in the /Home/ folder on the primary drive. Do not remove the folders themselves. DO NOT remove anything from the /Home/Library folder. This is in case you must switch back to using the Home folder on the primary drive.

  • How do I move an iTunes library from one external drive to another?

I need to move my iTunes library from one external disk to another, because the original disk is about to fail. So, I went into iTunes Perferences --> Advanced, and set the library to a new, empty folder on the new drive.
Nothing changed. I expected all my music to vanish from iTunes, so that I would have to re-import it. However, all the music remained, still on the old disk. At this point, if I were to recreate the library on the new disk, I would have all of my music twice.
Is it possible to move an iTunes library from one external drive to another, or am I stuck with my original choice until I buy a new machine? If I can move it, can one of you clever folks explain how it could be done?

    Paul Seymour1 wrote:
However, those are all dealing with old versions of iTunes that still contained the Advanced --> Consolidate Library command which is no longer part of the app. (I'm on iTunes 10.6.1.)
Consolidate is still part of iTunes.
It is in iTunes menu File > Library > Manage library > Consolidate.
The article you linked to is old and it is (and was) a hacky way of doing it.
Just copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder to new location, hold Option (Mac) or Shift (Windows) when launching iTunes.

  • How do I move my iTunes Library to an external drive and retain everything?

I'm sure this is a common [stupid] question, but I couldn't find a clear answer and I want to be sure I'm doing it correctly.
To clarify; I want to move/relocate my iTunes Library folder to an external drive (FW800 two-disk RAID1) to free up my system drive and have a backup. Do I redirect iTunes to the new location and use File>Library>Consolidate Library, or, can I just move or copy the 'iTunes' folder to the external drive and then change the iTunes 'music folder location' to the new location? Will this now save all subsequent imported/purchased music, movies,,..etc to the external drive and retain all my library details?

  • How do I move my itunes media to an external drive?

My hard drive is getting full. I would like to move my tunes media to an external drive but now I have music all over. Has anyone done this succesfully?

Copy the entire iTunes folder to the root of external drive, e.g. as X:\iTunes where X: is the drive letter. Click the icon for iTunes and immediately press and hold down the shift key. Keep holding until asked to choose or create a library. Click choose and browse to the file X:\iTunes\iTunes Libary.itl. Use File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate Files and click OK. iTunes will create local copies of any stray files in the media folder. You can then delete the originals stored elsewhere.
Backup the library with this User Tip. (And yes, that means you really need another drive.)

  • How to Encrypt Home Folder Located on External Drive

I have an iMac 5K with a 512GB internal SSD.  I decided to relocate my users' home folders to an external HDD due to their size (won't all fit on the SSD).
That part is working fine.  However, it has now dawned on me that I would like to encrypt those home folders in case that external HDD is stolen.  The problem, of course, is that by encrypting that external HDD, those users won't be able to login, since you can't login if your home folder is not immediately available.
Only solution that I read about is to have another user (with a home folder on the SSD) login first after startup and decrypt the HDD.  The would then allow the other users to login successfully.
Is that the solution I should go with here?  Or is there some other approach that will work better?  Or should I move my home folders back to the SSD and just keep the large stuff on the external HDD?

If your pictures, music, movies are not sensitive, you could relocate those to the external drive.

  • HT1589 iMac:  How do I move my iTunes folder from one external hard drive to another external drive?

Due to file size reasons, I found myself several years ago with the need to move my iTunes Library from my desktop's internal drive to an external drive [which I also used via partition for a backup of my internal drive]  I now have to move to a different external hard drive -- again for more space.  I've copied the iTunes Library to the new drive, but can't seem to get iTunes to recognize and run it.
What specifically do I need to do to get this done?

You could plug the WD drive straight into the TC but it will be much faster to do it with the WD drive plugged into the computer.. and just mount the TC hard disk in Finder.
To move itunes library you must follow the Apple instructions.. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449
You may need to reconnect itunes to the library before you try to move it.. !!

  • How can I move entire ITunes library to an external drive

How can I move the entire file to a new external drive & still add new downloads & use from the external G: drive?
Or can't this be done - I have the 80G Ipod & the files take up so much space that I want to move it to the new G: drive.
I thought I had it figured out but nothing would play from the G drive, so I had to restore everything back to the C: drive.
    Thanks for any advice

This is actually the 5G iPod forum, not the iTunes folder.
However, To move your iTunes music...
    1 Quit iTunes.
2 Move the entire iTunes folder including music to the external drive.
3 Restart iTunes holding the Shift key in Windows, Option key in Mac.
4 iTunes will ask to Create new library or Choose existing library. Select Choose existing library and select the library in the folder you just moved.
5 Move the old iTunes folder to the trash but do not empty it.
6 Restart iTunes normally and verify the songs work. If they do, empty the trash.

  • How do I Move Events from an Internal to External drive?

    Hello,
I am trying to move events on my internal drive to my new external drive. Everything is set up and I see the external drive, but after reading other posts and replies it seems I can't just move the files from the internal to external drive by dragging and dropping using finder.
Can anyone give some guidance on how I do this so i don't have to reload all my videos on the external drive.
Also, when they are moved over, will i see the external drive when I open iMovie, or do I ahve to do something to see it in my Events Library.
    Any help be be appreciated.

Can anyone give some guidance on how I do this so i don't have to reload all my videos on the external drive.
Best approach is to import files directly to the external drive during the initial import process by selecting the appropriate drive in the import window. However, for Events already stores, here is A QUICKIE VIDEO TUTORIAL.
Also, when they are moved over, will i see the external drive when I open iMovie, or do I ahve to do something to see it in my Events Library.
You must activate the "external drive" icon in iMovie '08 to make your external drives visible in the Event Library list. (I.e. Press the icon to the right of the "Event Library" title and to the left of the actual Event Window.) Sorry, answered your e-mail message before seeing the second question here.

  • How do I move time machine files from one external drive to another?

My original external drive isn't big enough. So I've bought a second larger one. How do I move the earlier Time Machine backups from Ext Drive #1 to Ext Drive #2 so I can access my full history, and leave Drive #1 for other backup items?
Ext Drive #1= SimpleTech 120 GB
Ext Drive #2= WEstern 500 GB

When you are ready to pass the 320GB drive on, I would format it. That will make the entire drive available to him to use as his TM. I would be sure that each drive has a unique name so that there will be no confusion for TM as to which computer goes with which drive. If you want to start fresh with the 500GB drive, I'd format it as mac-extended-journaled. When you connect it the first time to your computer, you will be asked if you want to use it as your TM. If you are not prompted to select it as your TM, you can configure TM by opening system preferences, click on TM, click on "change drive" and choose your new drive.
Another choice is to follow the steps in my previous response for restoring your current TM to the new drive by booting from a Leopard start up disk and accessing Disk Utilities from there so you can restore the drive. It is essential that the new hard drive is the exact name as the old TM hard drive. In this last scenario you would continue adding to your current set of backups.

  • How do I move my itunes library to an external drive?

I moved my itunes media folder from laptop C:drive to external E:drive.  I redirected itunes to the new media folder in Preferences, but in the moving and deleting, messed up the placement of the itunes library folders.  Now itunes is empty (just like when you first install it).  If I "add folder to itunes", it rebuilds a media folder on the C: drive.
Is there a way to move the whole itunes package to the E:drive, and just have it launch from/save to there?
