You can authorize the new computer from the Store menu. The menu bar is initially hidden but can be revealed with CTRL+B.

Since things are already broken it might be best to create this layout first then use FindTracks to repair things. Ideally you would have a complete clone of the library on a second drive as a backup. You would have the library folder at the root of the drive and the media folder inside it. Connect to the library by shift-starting iTunes. If everything is in the normal layout iTunes may be able to heal itself if you attempt to get info and locate a missing file when prompted. - you must use any remaining store credit on your account
- download all purchased content

If I create two Text Boxes and position them side by side with outline touching and choose Unite, this creates one larger Text Box and text flows across and down. On the otherhand, if I overlap the upper left corner of a lower Text Box over one above and to the left, then choose Union, pasted text fills the first Text Box and then flows across and down into the other box. Here is a Union example:

Nothing changed. I expected all my music to vanish from iTunes, so that I would have to re-import it. However, all the music remained, still on the old disk. At this point, if I were to recreate the library on the new disk, I would have all of my music twice.

Consolidate is still part of iTunes.
It is in iTunes menu File > Library > Manage library > Consolidate.
The article you linked to is old and it is (and was) a hacky way of doing it.
Just copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder to new location, hold Option (Mac) or Shift (Windows) when launching iTunes.

Note if you have failed to move contacts and calendar items across you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should merge the existing data from the device.
