How do I move my music from an imac to a laptop?

How do I move my music from an imac to a laptop? Nothing was purchased at the itunes store, it's all from cd's I imported to the itunes library on an imac originally-but now i have a laptop...

You can do it over a network, or use a hard drive, or a flash drive if you have one big enough that doesn't turn it into a 20 step copy chore.
iTunes: How to move [or copy] your music to a new computer [or another drive] - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
Quick answer if you let iTunes manage your music:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Start iTunes with the option (shift on Windows) key held down and guide it to the new location of the library.

  • I have iTunes on an XP service pack 3 computer, recently purchased a Windows 7 Home preimum laptop.  How do I move my music from the XP to the laptop?  do I need to have the same version of iTunes on both computers?

I have used iTunes on a desk top with XP service pack 3 and have quite a bit of music on that computer.  Recently purchased laptop with windows Premium Home and am now laoding iTunes on the laptop.  How do I copy my music to the laptop and in the future how do I sync the music files on the two computers?  Do I need the same version of itunes on both computers?

    Quit iTunes on new computer.
Copy the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from old computer to /My Music/ on new computer.
    Launch iTunes.
Thant is all you need to do.

How do you move all music from two computers into one itunes account?

An "iTunes account" is an online account you use for buying music, like a bank account.  An iTunes collection is the media you see when you open iTunes. Which do you mean?
If it is two computers, it would also help to know where these are located. Are they on the same local network? If they are, try Home Sharing (and you have control of both and you aren't just trying to get music fro your computer to your friend's computer in another state).  If they are not, you'll have to use an external hard drive or flash drive.
Is this on a PC? Your computer information says Windows but you posted this in the iTunes for Mac forum.

How do I move the music from my iTunes library on my desktop computer to my iPad?

Connect the iPad to your computer and select it on the left-hand sidebar of your computer's iTunes (if you have iTunes 11 on your computer then you can enable the left-hand sidebar via control-S on a PC, option-command-S on a Mac), and then use the Music tab on the right-hand side of iTunes to select which of your iTunes music to sync to the iPad's Music app

how do I move my music from my ipad to a new computer with itunes.  I have already done the purchases

If you want to copy music off then File > Transfer Purchases will only copy iTunes purchased music off the iPad. To copy music bought from other sources and/or copied from CDs then you will need to use a third-party program to copy them off - see the page that I linked to for some examples.

How do I move/copy music (a playlist) from iTunes to my USB stick, so that i can play it on my Media Center?

Are you using Finder to try and transfer, or are you using iTunes?
Using Finder should yield no "Decoder" error.

  • I got a new computer and some of my music apparently wasn't backed up to the external hard drive.  I have some of the music that didn't save on an iphone. How do I move the music from the iPhone into my iTunes library on the computer?

I got a new computer and somehow have lost some of my more recently purchased and or imported music.  I have some of that music on an iphone and some on an ipad.  How do I get the music from those devices into my itunes library without losing everything else?

Some of the information below has subsequently appeared in a document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • How do I move my music from pc to a new mac

I bought a mac a few weeks back but have been afraid to move my ipod and songs over from my pc; not having any luck. Do I have to deauthorize the pc?

Thanks so much for the prompt reply Niel; just to confirm this article will assist me in moving music from pc to mac, not vice versa? In reading the article I kind of knew I was going to have to log onto the old PC and deauthorize; I just want to make sure I get the rest right. As I re-read it, I think it's correct. Wish me luck, actually wish my ipod, pc and new mac luck. I'll let you know how it goes. Again many thanks.

  • How do i move my music from iphone to iphone

i would like to know how to move music from my old iphone 4 to my new iphone 4 using itunes but not having to create a play list and sync. Hopeing for a "drag and drop' or "copy and paste" kind of way

Transferring info from your current iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to a new device
iTunes Store- Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
iOS- Transferring information from your current iPhone/iPad/iPod touch to a new device
You can't drag and drop between iDevices. You need to use iTunes and your computer.

  • How do i move my music from my old pc to my new one.

I bought a new pc.  I have the hard drive from my old pc connected to the new one to move my files.  I've looked at the instructions on this web site but can't figure out how to move my music.  I'm an idiot.  Can some one please help me.

You can add the contents of the media folders from the other drive into the Automatically Add to iTunes folder, then dedupe. After importing, hold down the shift key and press File > Display Exact Duplicates. Sort the resulting list on Date Added, then select those files added today, delete, and move to the recycle bin.
This will bring in the media from your old library, but not ratings, play counts, playlists etc. Gathering up that extra data would be techincally feasible but not trivial. If, however, it was really important to you then you'd need to take a different approach and do some preparation before importing the media into your current library.
