How do I move my Time Machine data to another hard drive?

I have a WD Passport 250 external that I want to move my current TM data out of, and put in my new WD My Book 1TB. I tried moving over the Backups.backupdb file directly to a new whatever partition on my 1TB drive (I have two partitions, one for TM and one for whatever). Every time I do a copy and paste, it doesn't do anything. I can't even rename the Backups.backupdb folder. Is it locked? I want to move it over to my 1TB drive so I can format this Passport and use it for something else.

Fine - if you wish to use Apple's DU feel free to do so. However, you might ask yourself why Apple does not expose the DU's feature in its Time Machine Help docs for restoring a TM volume to another volume.
SuperDuper! version 2.5 was a long time coming because dealing with the Time Machine 'innards' was a non trivial task. It now works perfectly.
Do not assume that DU and the TM innards will always be in sync.
SD! is dedicated to ensure its customer base has a robust, reliable and up-to-date facility for cloning a TM volume which by the way can be on the same Volume as a cloned boot disk/volume.

How Do I use my time machine as an external hard drive?

Time Machine is software that allows a Mac to backup to a Time Capsule or other hard drive, so I think you are asking about the Time Capsule here, correct?
    http://www.apple.com/timecapsule/
How do you plan to connect the Time Capsule to your network, or is it already connected and configured?
When you have it configured on the network, you can use the Finder to copy/paste or drag/drop files from your Mac to the Time Capsule disk.

  • Apple is replacing my 27" iMac Hard Drive and when I get it back, I want to know how do I restore from Time Machine to before the hard drive failed

My hard drive (1TB) failed this week on my Late 2009 27" iMac and I took it into the Apple Store.  They confirmed the problem was the hard drive after a couple tests and offered to replace it for $260.  I have everything backed up on my Time Capsule within Time Machine and am wondering how I can restore my entire PC (all my files, settings, etc) from my last back up a couple days ago.  I am assuming it is a simple fix, but I want to have a good plan when it comes back...if there are articles or other threads you can point me to, I would apprecite it.  I am looking forward to getting a refreshed computer back but it would be great to have it fully restore from my last backup.
    Thanks!

  • Transfer Time Machine Data to New Hard Drive

I recently purchased a Seagate 250GB FreeAgent External Hard Drive ($75 at Buy.com, with shipping and a five year warranty!) and decided that when it arrives it would be my dedicated Time Machine drive, though I am currently using a 75GB hard drive that I had laying around the apartment.
What I am wondering is that if I can, when the new drive arrives, drag the Time Machine files that are on the old drive to the new one, then designate the new drive for Time Machine backups.
The reason I want to do this is to create a relatively seamless backup from when I first got Leopard, as opposed to starting over again (which I can do, but defeats my purpose to some degree).

    Hi,
Yes, you can do this. I have recently done the exact same thing. See this thread for details:-

  • Moving Time Machine backsups to another hard drive gives an error??

My current 250gb HD that Time Machine was putting my backups on has gone sour. So.. I bought a 1.5TB Seagate for time Machine. I moved what I could from the old Time Machine HD (which still shows up in the finder) but I can't move the Backups.backupdb file which houses all my backups. I get an error "-1426"
    What should I do?

The new drive I formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). The old one is simply Mac OS Extended.
And the *Partition Map Scheme?* That needs to be either +Apple Partition Map+ or GUID. Check by clicking the top line for the drive in Disk Utility's sidebar; it will be shown at the bottom.
I cant "repair" the old backup drive. Disk Utility freaks out. Whenever I restart the computer, I get a pop up saying that the disk "Time Machine" could not be repaired... blah blah blah.
Ah, then they can't be copied, either (and would you really want to copy corrupted backups?)
+Disk Warrior+ or another such app might be able to repair them.
    Otherwise, they're unusable.
If you haven't already, partition the new drive, so Time Machine has it's own, exclusive space. See #4 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

  • How can I move one CC program (Photoshop) to another hard drive?

So I generally love everything about Adobe CC, but there's one huge downside I can't find a work around to - I want Photoshop (which I use 95% of the time) to be installed on my SSD, but the SSD isn't big enough to have the entire CC suite installed to it (and it would displace other applications I use more often). Is there some way I can install Photoshop to a different drive (in the same computer) as the rest of the CC suite?
    Thanks!

Thanks Mylenium. Ironically that may encourage me to drop the subscription to the entire suite - running Photoshop off of a platter drive is painful and as much as I like having the rest of the apps I'm not sure I get enough use out of them to justify being forced to run Photoshop this way. This seems like a pretty obvious oversight by Adobe, hopefully they improve the app management within the Creative Suite.

  • How do I move data on time machine from one external hard drive to another

How do I move data on time machine from one external hard drive to another?

Although the documentation says you can copy Time Machine backups in the Finder, it's very slow and sometimes doesn't work at all.
Launch Disk Utility, open the built-in help, and search for the term "Duplicate." Follow the instructions. Turn Time Machine OFF in its preference pane while copying the volume.

  • Time Machine Data Transfer - From FireWire Drive to Time Capsule - HELP!

Time Machine Data Transfer - From FireWire Drive to Time Capsule - HELP!
I've been searching for weeks for a solution to my problem. Here's the story I've come across since I installed Leopard on Oct. 26, 2007.
I first installed Leopard on my Early 2006 MacBook and set up Time Machine with a 200GB external FireWire drive. Since then, things have been fine, until Time Machine started deleting the oldest backups. I'm a pack-rat and hated this feeling of losing data. So, I now have a few months worth of backups on my 200GB FireWire drive.
The Time Capsule is released, I finally talk myself into getting one and transferring my old data from the 200GB drive to my 1TB TC.
I did some researching through forums about how to move data from one Time Machine drive to another, so I took the concept and wanted to apply it to my Time Capsule. I made a DMG image of my 200GB drive, in order to move the data. I figured if I can make an image, copy it, and open it on the Time Capsule - all will go smoothly - just as some had mentioned they've done with external drives.
Now, I have a 164GB DMG image of my Time Machine, with no hope in sight of gaining it back. I've tried taking the image, using Disk Utility, and restoring my original 200GB external with the imaged Time Machine data, but whenever I do, I come across error messages.
In Disk Utility, I've done the following steps:
    * Disk Image is found on Time Capsule
    * I select the 200GB drive and select 'Restore'
    * I drag and drop the Disk Image to the 'Image' field
    * I drag and drop the 200GB drive into the the 'Restore' field
    * Select 'Erase Destination'
    * Select 'Restore'
    * I get the warning message that I'll erase the drive - I proceed
    * I enter my password
    Error message pops up:
"Restore Failure: Could not find any scan information. The source image needs to be imagescanned/scanned for restore."
I select the image in Disk Utility, then proceed with the following steps:
    * Click on "Image" then down to "Scan Image for Restore"
    * I enter my password
After hours of waiting, I get another error message:
    "Unable to scan. (Broken pipe)."
I'm going to see, after transferring the DMG to the Time Capsule, if I can drag-and-drop the files from the Time Capsule drive onto the 200GB hard drive.
IF anyone has any more suggestions, please let me know!

32 updates on this Mac since December 2007 - Hardware, software, OS...
They keep coming at about 6 or 7 a month. Some of them I don't care about, but several are essential. 10.5.3 has been seeded to the testers a couple of times and will probably show up in the next few weeks. Jaguar wasn't worth a d*mn until 10.2.6, Panther about 10.3.4, Tiger about 10.4.4 - I'd say we are ahead or on schedule Too bad I can't get Apple to fix Spaces. I wish they'd focus on what I want but I guess some take more time than others.

  • Using Time Machine to restore external hard drive data

I have been using a Mac Mini running 10.6.8 for years as a media server.  I have always been very careful to maintain backups of everything, and the inevitable did happen - the hard drive containing all my media did fail.
To clarify my set up, my Mac Mini internal hard drive is insufficient to store all my media, so I have been using an external 2TB drive to store it.  I then set up Time Machine to back up both the Mac Mini and the 2TB external drive to a second 3TB external drive.  Now that the 2TB drive with my media has failed, I seem to be having problems restoring all the media from 3TB drive.  This is because the Time Capsule interface is designed to display finder windows at various points in time so you can go back to when your missing files existed and restore them.  The problem is that I need the entire contents of the dead 2TB drive restored to a new drive, but I can't open a Time Capsule window that shows the contents of the old drive.  I have tried opening /Volumes in a finder window, then invoking Time Machine, but my dead hard drive does not show up in the list of volumes.  When I open the 3TB drive in a Finder window I can clearly see that it has backups of the 2TB drive, but they are spread out among 83 different snapshots of various dates.
How can I use Time Machine to easily restore the entire contents of the dead 2TB external drive to a new external drive?

  • How do I transfer time capsul data to external hard drive to free up space?

How do I transfer time capsule data to external hard drive to free up space?

The fastest method is straight copy and paste..
Plug a suitable hard disk into your computer.. format it Mac OS extended journaled (if not already).
Select the folders/files you want to move.. copy and paste them to the external drive..
Double check that the files are copied because the next step will delete the files forever.. there is no trash on the TC.
Delete the files on the TC.
You can also do a full archive of the TC disk to a USB plugged into it by USB.. it must be formatted Mac OS Extended Journaled. It must be big enough to hold all data on the TC disk.. best idea is to buy the same size or bigger.. so if you use 2TB TC buy a 2TB or bigger external drive.
    In airport utility select archive.
That will copy everything on the TC disk to the USB drive.. you could then Erase the disk of the TC.. this is super fast if you choose quick erase.. just a few minutes. But the archive will take many hours.. say for 2TB about 12-24hours.. and you cannot use the disk in the TC during that time.

If you want to use Time Machine to recover the contents of one of its a backups to a new drive, follow the instructions in Mac OS X 10.6: Recovering your entire system. Note that you must select the "Restore System From Backup" option from the Utilities menu of the Installer disc to do this.
Also note that if you are transferring files to a hard drive to be used with a different computer, you should use Migration Assistant instead. This intentionally will not copy everything because some settings, applications, etc. are not compatible computer-to-computer. Migration Assistant will copy everything that is.

It sounds like there are two separate sets, and you're not connected to the right set.

how to reinstall the system from time machine to a new hard drive?

If you are connected to the internet you can do this.
Boot your computer and immediately hold down command, option and R  (three keys together). This gets you connected with internet recovery.
See this article for more directions: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4718.
This process installs an OS on your blank drive. You can then boot from the fresh OS installation and restore from your Time Machine back up.
Note that you cannot boot from a TM back up.
