Make sure the external drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) and is connected with a wired connection, quit iPhoto, drag the iPhoto library to the EHD intact as a single entity and launch iPhoto while depressing to option key. Use the resulting select library window to select the new location. Be sure the EHD is available prior to launching iPhoto

Hi I hope someone can help. My girlfriend spilled soda on her 2008 macbook aluminium running Leopard , rendering it useless. She has since bought a new Macbook pro and would like to get her photos from iphoto onto her new comp. I've removed her harddrive from her old damaged computer and put it into an external USB enclosure, her new Macbook picks up the external hardrive but when I try to move the photo folder (drag) onto her new computer, it says something about the version of iphoto not being compatible. Also when i click on the photo folder on the external harddrive there are no photos on it. Any help would be appreciated, and would score me some brownie points with her .

The general answer is to trash the iPhoto library on the new computer (assuming it is empty) and drag the old iPhoto library to the pictures folder of the new machine and launch iPhoto letting it convert the library

Our iTunes guru Terence Devlin advises the following:
1. Quit iTunes
2. Drag the iTunes folder from your internal hd - located in ~/Music folder - to your external hd. DO NOT delete the original one from your internal hd... yet!
3. When the transfer is complete, press and hold the Option(alt) key and fire up iTunes.
4. A "Choose iTunes Library" window will come up. Click on the "Choose Library" button.
5. Navigate to where the iTunes folder is located in the external hd.
6. Within the iTunes folder, select the iTunes Library file and click Choose...
That's it. iTunes will now display all your playlists, songs, movies, podcasts etc. At this point, should you wish, you can delete the iTunes folder from the internal hd to free up space.

How can I archive photos in iPhoto to a hard drive and retain the Album folders and the Events? I tried to Export the Albums but just transferred the files individually.

If you want to maintain the iPhoto organisation then back up the iPhoto Library.
If you want to export to the Finder, well you need to create a folder for the contents of an Album and expot to that.
If you have an older version of iPhoto: Apps like iPhoto2Disk or PhotoShare will help you export to a Folder tree matching your Events. This feature is built in to iPhoto 11.

How hard is it to set up Elements/CS5 to access photo's off of portable hard drive so I can free up

I have down loaded approximately 4000 files to an external 1 terabite portable drive ( Western Digital, My Passport ) from my laptop to free up space. I would like to access the photo's for editing in both elements 11 and CS5, and Lightyear 3. I have not deleted the originals off of my laptop yet until I know it will work, or more correctly, how to make it work. When I connected the portable drive to the laptop afterwards, the downloader wanted to download the 4000+ photo's back on to my laptop. Specs- ASUS N53S, 8 mb Ram, Core i7, Windows 7, about 116 GB harddrive. Can anyone help me with the steps needed to make this work so that I can take the photo's of my laptops hard drive but still have easy access to them with the portable drive ? Thanks, Mike

Normally you can plug in the external drive and then simply drag and drop folders after clicking on the yellow pins in the Organizer left hand panel. You don’t say if you are using Organizer.
The complication is that if you are also using Lightroom 3 with the same image files, that will corrupt the file paths in the Lightroom Library. It would be easier if you are not using Organizer and restrict your file management to LR with CS5 and the PSE11 Editor set up as your external editing applications.
The safest method is probably to first select the 4000 images in LR3 and save XMP/Metadata to the files. Then move the images to My Passport and re-import into LR3. If that works satisfactorily you can delete the original folders from LR and click the button - Delete also from Disk.

As the subject line suggests I need to "move" things from my regular Mac Hard Drive to the additional Hard Drive I installed. My normal (forgive my lack of technical talk) hard drive is almost full. I would like to move things like iTunes, iPhoto etc to my new hard drive (1TB) so that I can free up space on my current more regularly used hard drive. Is there an easy way to do this?

There's various approaches you can take. Personally I would try to leave applications and the system on the main drive and just move data files to another drive. Some applications really want to be run from the main drive and will become cranky if you put them elsewhere because things aren't where they expect them to be.
Moving files is often just a matter of dragging them to the new place. Note that if this new place is another drive the files get copied and you will have to delete the originals from the original drive once you are done copying.
Applications can have a complex structure with bits and pieces of files all over the place, some may be invisible. While these can be copied, as I said before it is often best to leave them on the main drive.
Just for your information, you posted your software question in the Apple.com > Support > Discussions > Power Mac G5 > Power Mac G5 (tower) hardware questions area. Your computer information says you are running a Mac Pro and Snow Leopard (which won't run on a G5). It doesn't really matter in this case but if you have a platform specific question in future, for fastest response you might want to make sure it gets into the correct forum.

I am trying to move all my photos to a new drive with different drive letter. I know I can do a backup and restore inside PSE13 to perform that. However, I also have Lightroom 5 on the current setup. How would I now use the new location for the photos in lightroom if they are already moved by PSE?

I don't recommend the Time Machine or Migation Assistent approach. The first tneds to be very slow and the second often carries baggage that is probably best not transferred to a new computer.
Lightroom doesn't use activation, therefore, can be installed on your new Mac without having first removed it fom the old. Your images and catalogs can be copied across to the new Mac using an a portable disk drive as the transfer medium. Typically, on Mac computers, the catalog and image files are stored in the Pictures folder. If this is where you have them then then copy them to the same location on the new Mac. Once copied you can open the catalog folder then double click on the .lrcat file to launch Lightroom.

EXTREMELY poor idea! Leave the apps on the internal HD. You can move files and libraries from iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie, Aperture, etc.. to an external HD but leave the apps them self on the internal HD.

I don't know if you're under Applecare, but I've used them often to guide me through the process of both moving my photos & music, and getting my laptop to know where to look for them. I've stored my media on an external drive for years and the Apple techs always help, from partitioning the drive to moving the libraries.
They can also help you understand the difference between RAM & 'memory'. It's possible the computer needs the 81 GB's for 'running purposes', though that sounds a bit high for that. Someone else may know.
What Clinton describes does work, by the way. But if you're not sure you get how to do that, don't be shy about calling Applecare.

Aside from checking here, I also Googled for an answer. Then I faced the problem on the Internet where stuff stays there forever and so I see solutions for previous and maybe obsolete versions of Itunes. I have no way of knowing if the seemingly sound advice was solved in later versions of Itunes. In one case there is a great YouTube video with a guy from Circuit City (now out of business). I found an extensive explanation that made my head explode with all the detail but I did understand enough to see that the solution they precribed has you go onto your new computer and make sure you rename your new hard drive to match the name of the hard drive from your old computer. That way Itunes on the new computer will be able to find it okay. These instructions also tell you to downlaod Itunes software on the new computer first and then move two different folders (I think one has the extension of .itl); one folder with the library and the other has the metadata--to the new computer. Then to confuse things I have seen instructions that also say to just move the files and they don't address the issue with the file names like turringtest said. Most discouraging is that all of the instructions I have talked about, explain what to do without ever addressing my specific situation where the old hard rive used to reside in an old computer and has an Vistas Operating System that apparently failed and caused me to get a new computer in the first place (I guess I could have loaded a new operating system but not sure if that would have wiped out my extensive files...also irrelevant to the discussion }:) Sorry). I moved my itunes library (approx. 70GB) over to the 500 GB hard drive, but I think it is still somewhere on the imac HD. I am looking for simple directions on how to move my itunes library and/or iphoto library and deleting the oriiginal version on my HD so that I have adequate room on my startup disk. Thoughts?
