I am trying to move playlists from my ipod to my itunes library on my new computer. I am specifically trying to find a way to move the entire playlist-- intact-- not just random songs, if possible. I realize there have been many answers posted to this question in the past but it appears that many of the answers are not up-to-date anymore for the latest itunes software and ipod hardware. There's also a way to perform this without downloading anything. Open iTunes. Open your Preferences. Keep it open so iTunes detects no connection. Go to My Computer\Tools\Folder Options\View All Hidden Files. Then click "Ok". Double click on your iPod, and drag the Ipod_Music folder to your desktop. It'll copy. (If you are not in disk mode. If you don't know what diskmode is, don't worry about it.) Final step is to use the safely remove iPod option (the little green thing in your system tray) and then go to File\Add Folder\iPod_Music. Everything should now be in your iTunes, assuming you're using Windows, because you're in the Windows board.

If you've downloaded the media idependently to each library so far then thet won't be exactly the same as there are different naming rules for the files and folders in OS X and Windows. See Make a split library portable for some general advice. You can move a portable library between Mac and Windows, but there is a delay opening the library after each change of OS.

You can't sync or drag your non iTMS music back directly from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Did you move them rename them or anything on the PC? If so this will make ! marks beside the songs and you need to help iTUnes locate these files again.
If you deleted the files yourself, then you can copy songs off the ipod by first setting it to "Manual update" then using third party software like yamipod http://www.yamipod.com to copy songs off the ipod

I have all my music and movies in the itunes library. I am wanting to move the movies to an external hard drive to save space, but keep the music in itunes on my computer. I want to be able to play them all through my apple TV via home sharing. I have read a number of posts about consolidating the library and how to access files from an external hard drive, and how to move the entire library to another location, but don't know how to move part of the library.

It is possible but it is not standard configuration for iTunes. You will need to learn details of how iTunes operates in order to stay on top of it and not be back here in a month with a messed up library, or in a year or two when you discover it is a real nuisance when it comes to transferring your content to a new drive.

Another way would be to copy the files to the external drive. Delete them from iTunes, then drag the copied files back to iTunes (re-adding them) while holding down the option key. If you do have anything in a playlist it will have to be re-added to the playlist, and you will lose ratings and date added.

A while ago, early this year i think, my hard drive died and i had to get a new one and re-install everything. I had most of my music backed up on an external but not everything. I re-installed Itunes, but didn't bother to put the music i had backed up back in the library, because it was already on my ipod anyway. so since then, whenever i want to put more stuff on my ipod, i import it into itunes and "manually manage", like click and drag it to my ipod.
so obviously my ipod has all my music on it, my library is very small and only includes stuff i added since replacing teh hard drive. my external back up has a lot of music but not everything.
Now, problem is, there are some songs on my ipod that are not in the library OR the backup (and i don't have the original cd's). I want them in my library so i can burn a CD for someone. and i can't figure out how to get these songs into itunes. when i go to "sync" it says this will erase the contents of my ipod and replace it with what is in the library(which is practically nothing). this is the opposite of what i would like to happen. so ideally i would like the contents of my ipod to = the contents of my library; or at least, move those few songs that currently exist only on my ipod into the library. i feel like this should be so easy to do, what am i doing wrong? help me? sorry this was long.

Get SharePod. it's a free download. Copy the downloaded file to your iPod, then run the program from your iPod. This will get all the music copied from your iPod (it will still be on the iPod) to your destination drive. From there, just drag the folder with all the music in it to the Music Window in iTunes. Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer is designed for you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchased content.
