How do I navigate to /usr/local in the Finder?

I have a file in a folder beneath /usr/local that I want to be able to open in the Finder. However, there does not appear to be any way to navigate to this folder (or various other folders beneath /) in the Finder. What do I do?
If it makes any difference, I'm specifically trying to do File Open in Firefox. This brings up the Finder dialog box that I am unable to point to the file I want.
My workaround is to create a softlink to the file in my home directory. But this is a stupid hack. If the file is on my machine, Finder should be able to find it. That's why they call it Finder.

For opening things from either Finder or an application you might consider this:
1. Do as biovizier suggests to go to the hidden parent folder
2. With /usr open in Finder hold down both the Option and Command keys and click and hold on the proxy icon at the top of folder's toolbar and drag to your Desktop
3. This will create an alias to the invisible folder which is visible in the Finder and application open and save dialog boxes
I made a folder called hidden and put aliases to bin, private, sbin and usr in it. I can easily get to the contents of all of them now.

How do I remove an old file from the Finder Favorites list?

Good Afternoon.
I have a shiney new MBPro with 10.7.1.
On my old machine running Snow Leopard, I had two .xls files I used often that I had dragged to the left side into the favorites. The truth is, I hadn't used them in months, but hadn't bothered to remove them. Then about ten days ago, the Bad Thing happened, and I had to replace my laptop rather suddenly. The nice folks at the Apple store transferred all the data and I was off an running in just a few hours.
Now, I thought to myself, I should remove those two files since I don't use them any more. But how?
If I click on them nothing happens. If I right-click on them, nothing happens. I can't drag them out because they don't drag and they aren't listed on the list of favorites that can be toggled on and off in preferences.
I checked. The files did still exist but deleting them didn't remove their names from the favorites list.
Any suggestions as to how to remove these two .xls files from the Finder's Favorites list?

It is not an app. It is a feature of icloud and iphone. Did you set it up on the iphone itself BEFORE it was stolen? If not, then you cannot track it at all.
Change your passwords and report it to the police.

How to put g95 in usr/local/bin?

I am trying to compile a program called elmerice. When I type the "make compile" command, I get the following message:

I did install (I think successfully) g95 using macports, i.e. the command "sudo port install g95" but apparently it is not in /usr/local/bin, which seems to be where elmerice wants to find it.
One complicating factor might be that /usr/local/bin does have gfortran it.
It seems like elmerice will only use g95. Can I put g95 in the /usr/local/bin directory from wherever I have it now, and if so, how? Or can I just reinstall g95 in that directory?

Try creating a symbolic link from /usr/local/bin/g95 to wherever MacPorts put it. That is probably the easiest solution. Ideally, you would fix the makefile, but that wouldn't be easy.

You don't unfortunately, iWeb though great does not allow that funtion.
If it is a deal breaker for you I would suggest SandVox or RapidWeaver.

How can I save some music locally and the rest to an external drive or NAS?

I love my MBP w/ 16 GB RAM and SSD drive EXCEPT ... the SSD drive is lacking storage.
I'm trying to find a way to store select songs/photos/videos locally and the rest on an external drive or better yet a NAS, while still getting the convenient use of iPhoto and iTunes. Ideally, I would configure certain albums/playlists to stay local while the full library of media is on the external storage and when I plug in my iPhone/iPad the new photos/videos would upload to the external storage.
Has anyone discovered a way to do this?
Do I need to consider other programs like Lightroom to pull this off?

Setting it up the way you have with the library on the internal and just the media on the external makes it a lot more tricky to move things around. If it was all on the external you could do in the time it takes to copy the files plus about 20 seconds.
You can use the same library file, except in that file are references pointing to the media files on the USB drive. Are you planning on doing this with the same USB drive that you are using right now>? It is possible it may work. If the configuration is that you have SongA on USB drive Fred, as long as the drive remains named Fred then you should be able to move it to a different point of attachment. If you are planning on using a different USb drive you can try renaming the new USB drive to the exact same name as the existing one and maybe trick iTunes into not noticing the difference.
This is where having as much detail as possible when posting an issue is helpful so we don't have to consider every possible configuration.

How to delete when file in use by the finder?

I have two files in my trash which won't delete. I get the error that they are being used by another program. Holding down option, using secure empty trash, using the terminal method of deleting the trash.. none of them work.
So I did the terminal command: lsof /path-to-file and found out it was being used by Finder. I don't think I can exactly quit the Finder process in Activity Monitor.. so how can I get these files out of my trash?

sudo rm -rf ~/.Trash/*
It tells me "Directory not empty". Argghh..

in Mountain Lion you can save text edit files to the icloud. How do I get iCloud to appear in the sidebar in Finder. On icloud only iwork is displayed for files. I usedropbox and it looks just like any other folder in Finder. Does iCloud behave the same?

Thanks. It began to dawn on me that this was the case as I try to poke around for ways to do this. I will continue to use Dropbox which works fantastically. Just wonder why Apple would come up with such a limited option.

In the finder window sidebar there is an entry called "Untitled CD", with the burn icon next to it. How do I get rid of it? Using v10.6.8, on an iMac.

How can I navigate through tabs without using the mouse?

I want to know how to navigate through tabs without using a mouse... just like you can navigate through multiple windows by using <alt><tab> ... because it's extremely annoying when I'm working on something to have to take my hands off the keyboard and go to the mouse.

You can also use Ctrl + Page Up and Ctrl + Page Down to go to the next and previous tab. I prefer those because it doesn't require the Shift key (Shift + Ctrl+ Tab) to go to the previous tab.

i'm using jdeveloper 11.1.1.0.1 , and i want to navigate from a page containing a panel collection which contains a table with single row selection to another page contains the details of this selection. in 10g i was do that using #{row.rowKeyStr} in the from value of the buttons action listner but here this is not valid a red line appears when i write this in the from value , in the expression builder when i expand the jsp objects i can't find row node also if i expand the bindings node i can't find my attributes!! .

I have iframe in that i have given source as a url of page. On that page load of iframe page i want to navigate the parent page of iframe to the other page i.e. replace original parent page.
how can I acheive that.
When generally I use following method it redirects to that page.

So you load a page in an iFrame and on load of this page you want it to replace th eparent page in which it loads. So why don't you directly navigate to that page?

Is there a shortcut to moving between multiple files I have open in the same app?

Command-tilde (~) will cycle you through all open windows in the active application. (This is the same key combination as recommended by Listen Inn.)
Command-tab will cycle you through open applications, from most recently opened back.
Depending on your machine and OS version, you may also be able to use F3, or squeeze the two side buttons on the Mighty Mouse to show all open windows, then click the one you want to bring it to the front.

How do I recover a device deleted from the Finder sidebar?

I connected a Garmin Edge 800 GPS unit to my MacBook Pro to backup its files. I made a file on the computer named "Garmin" to copy the files into. In the sidebar, in Finder, two devices showed, one named "Garmin" and the other "No Name" which is the mini SD card for the Garmin unit. I thought I'd try dragging "Garmin" into the folder but when I dragged and dropped it went up in the cloud of smoke icon. The actual Garmin unit works fine but when it's plugged in the only thing showing in the sidebar is "No Name". If I eject "No Name" and disconnect I get the message that "Garmin" wasn't ejected properly, so I know it's being detected, I just don't see it in the sidebar any more. It wouldn't matter to me except I need to open the Garmin unit so I can copy the files.
I looked in "Trash" but nothing named "Garmin" exists there. I also tried restarting the computer and the Garmin before reconnecting but the only device showing in the sidebar is the "No Name" mini card. So, how do I get the unit to show up in the sidebar again?
