How Do I Not Import Duplicate Photos?

When I used to import photos, iphoto would ask if I wanted to import duplicates and I would check "no". It doesn't do this anymore. Did something change? I'm using iphoto 5.0.4. Thanks!

I had the same problem with iPhoto. I did find that if I uploaded the files to the desktop first with Image Capture and then imported into iPhoto it would recognize duplicates and work as intended. I ended up changing my workflow and deleting my memory card after each upload. Solved the problem completely that way.

  • How does, Do Not Import Duplicates, work?

Here's what I found in the user manual. (how about that, I read the manual before someone pointed it out to me)
Aperture checks the filename of the master to determine if an image is a duplicate of one in the library.
Aperture is checking the filename of the Master. So, if you always rename Masters, then this feature wouldn't actually do anything. Correct?
What if you are importing an image which happens to have the same filename. Perhaps you've reset your camera's naming feature. Or your importing from a different camera (probably same manufacturer) that happens to be a the point of overlapping, default names?
Does it actually check the entire Library? I wondered since the option is in the section where you are picking the Project to store them in. It makes me think it's only looking in one particular Project.
Either way, I'm not sure this is such a great feature. I'd rather have duplicates, as opposed to skipping files it thinks are duplicates.
What's the best way to utilize this feature?

The user manual says that Aperture checks the filename. I'm not exactly sure what that means.
I imported a couple of images. I changed both the Version and Master name. Then, I used the Batch Change command to change the time zone, so the times were different.
I then tried to re-import the same images. If I checked Do Not Import Duplicates, Aperture hid the images I just imported. If I unchecked it, I could import the images. I left it unchecked and imported the images.
I wound up with duplicates. Even though the Version name, File (Master) name and Date fields for both duplicates were different.
So the feature appears to work pretty good.
My issue is, since I don't know how it works, I'm not sure how to use it.
My concern is that if it's checked, Aperture hides duplicates, so you have to uncheck it to see what Aperture thinks are duplicates. It would be nice if Aperture showed the images it thought was duplicates, but had them grayed out with no way to check the import box.
It would be nice to know how this feature works. How does Aperture decide what makes an import you are about to import a duplicate, or not?

  • When importing pictures from my iPhone, I select to NOT import duplicates, but it always does. How do I fix this?, When importing pictures from my iPhone, I select to NOT import duplicates, but it always does. How do I fix this?

How do I set my iphoto to not import duplicates when downloading from my i Phone.  I always tell it to NOT
import duplicates, but it always does. Please help!!!

A good general step for strange issues is to renew the iPhoto preference file - quit iPhoto and go to "your user name" ==> library ==> preferences ==> com.apple.iPhoto.plist and trash it - launch iPhoto which creates a fresh new default preference file and reset any personal preferences you have changed and if you have moved the iPhoto library repoint to it. This may help
This does not affect your photos or any database information (keywords, faces, places, ratings, etc) in any way - they are stored in the iPhoto library - the iPhoto preference file simply controls how iPhoto works - which is why renewing it is a good first step.

  • Do Not Import Duplicates (former PC /user/)

I about to set down and go through the Aperture Tutes.
However, can anyone advise as to whether it is a good idea to check the box to not import duplicates from my iPhoto Library or whether there may be a better way to manually delete these once they are in the program? I used Duplicate Annhilator at one point while in iPhoto but I am not sure I got it to work correctly.
I am moving from PC which means that the import into iPhoto was not very pretty and I had to do a lot of moving around to get images that had basically been in tens of different folders to sit in one single Album and in some cases there may be an image that should in fact show up in more than one or two Albums (even though I know this is not very good form).
While I would very much like to avoid having duplicates in the original database I would also like to avoid a scenario where I know I had a photo in the database but I cannot find it because the Do Not Import Duplicates option deleted the dupe from an Album it /should/ be in and left the original image in an Album where I would not think to look (or where I would need to search for awhile).
Any advice on helping me get further unstuck from the PC would be great.
    Thanks,
    Jon

The "Don't import Duplicates" only checks by filename (iirc -- either way, it is very limited in function). It won't help you at all in your quest to cull duplicates from your iPhoto library.
If your iPhoto Library is a mess and you import it into Aperture, your Aperture Library will also be a mess. The advantage here is that Aperture has better tools for you to use to organize and prune (and prevent making a mess in the future).
My advice is: make the import; read the first seven chapters of the [Aperture User Manual|http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual> (if you haven't yet); and create two additional libraries:
. a "practice" library containing nothing you don't mind losing (for instance, duplicates you make just for this purpose) which you use to try out everything you learn about Aperture, and
. a new empty Library for the images you capture while you are learning how to use Aperture and molding your old iPhoto mess into shape
Aperture makes it easy to switch between Libraries (and when you are ready, to merge Libraries).
Take your time. Be patient. As the carpenter says to his apprentice: +Measure twice, cut once.+
And ask more questions. You'll have plenty. Be as specific as possible.

  • "Do not import duplicates" doesn't work

    Hi everyone,
I've been using Aperture 3.5.1 for a while and the import process always worked fine, until suddenly the "Do not import duplicates" feature stopped working. Now any time I plug my iphone or insert the SD card the photos I've already imported appear again on the import screen.
The funny thing is that if I open the library with iPhoto and import the images with it, the duplicate pictures do not show up, so it's definitely an Aperture issue. For the time being I'll keep importing stuff via iPhoto and then switch to Aperture for editing, but I'd like to get this thing fixed. I filed a bug report on Apple's bug reporter last week but got no reply.
    Cheers

Well, it appears that if you
    - import an image
    - change your system time zone (going west, if that matters)
    - plug the device again
then Aperure doesn't recognize you've already imported that image. I don't see how this could be considered a normal behaviour, I call it a bug (a bug iPhoto doesn't have btw).
You left something out: How did you set the Time Zone brick in Aperture's Import panel, when you made that test with a differnet Time Zone?  Aperture uses the current system time zone to interpret the time stamps on the images as the default time zone, when you do not set the "camera time" and "actual time" correctly in the Import panel.  This way you will import the images with a different time stamp, and then they will be different for Aperture. The date/time of the file are differnet, the file will be considerd to be different. But you can prevent that by setting the time zone correctly in Aperture's Import panel.

  • Do not import duplicates not working

How can I import only new photos from memory card? the do not import duplicates checkmark  does not work anymore.

I reset the import settings to defaults, thinking I might have changed something inadvertently ( I am new at this), and now the checkmark for do not import duplicates cannot be checked ( for the past two weeks it could but it would still import all the duplicates)
This looks like there may be a problem with broken user preferences in your user account.
Test, if you can set the "Do not import duplicates" flag, if you sign in as a different user. Enable another user account for testing in the "System Preferences > Users& Groups", e.g. the "Guest" account, if you do not have a test account.  If the "Do not import Duplicates" is working well in this account, we'll know, that broken preferences files or other setings in your current account are probably causing this.
Then try to remove your user preferences as described in this document :   the Apple Aperture trouble-shooting page.
You user library may still be hidden, as is the default in Mavericks: To open your hidden user library:
Select the "Home" folder icon (the little house)  in the Finder's sidebar and press the key combination ⌘J to open the "view options".
    Enable "Show Library Folder".
Then open the Home folder and open the Library folder inside and navigate to ~/Library/Preferences
These files and folders need removing:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Aperture.plist
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Aperture
After removing the Preferences files it is essential to log off and on again, or to restart the computer, before you launch Aperture again.  Otherwise it may not take effect.

  • IPhoto 4 importing duplicate photos without dialog box opening

I often import pictures from my Canon PowerShot SD550 to more than one computer. I do not use iPhoto to delete photos after importing. Occasionally I need to import more recent photos to one computer before I have the opportunity to import older photos to the other computer which is at another location. I used to get a dialog box on this computer asking me if I want to import duplicate photos. I must have accidentally checked the wrong box once because iPhoto now imports all photos every time without the dialog box. How can I regain control to not import duplicates?

  • How do I locate all duplicate photos in iPhoto library?

I wish to delete all duplicate photos in my iPhoto (version 9.6) library. How can I id all duplicates in the library?

iPhoto does not have built-in tools to detect and remove duplicates, because the Import panel will show an alert, when you try to import duplicate photos.
If you managed to import the same photos twice, you can either remove them manually by sorting the photos by date, so duplicates will show side-by-side, or use third-party apps like iPhoto Library Manager, Photo Sweeper, etc.
See Old Toad's list at this link:  How to delete .jpg files
if you are new to iPhoto, you may be assuming there are duplicate photos, because iPhoto will show the same photos in different views - the Events view, Photos View, Last Import, Albums, all will be showing the same photos in different arrangements, but these photos are not duplicates, just different ways to access the same photos.

  • No option to not import duplicates in iPhoto 6

When importing from my digital camera into iPhoto 5 running OS 10.3, I was always asked if I wanted to import duplicates or not, so only new photos would be imported and I could leave some of my favorites on the camera. Having just installed Tiger and upgraded to iPhoto 6, I went to import new photos from my camera and was not given the option of not importing duplicates, so everything form the camera imported. Can anyone help with how I get that option back? Thanks.

    Hammertime:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. It appears that that feature is not working when importing directly from a camera. Post a bug report at iPhoto's feedback page: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphoto.html
However, I found that if I upload to a folder first and then import into iPhoto I get asked about duplicates when there are any. So a workaround would be to use Image Capture to upload to a temp folder on the desktop, title the folder as you'd want the roll to read, and then drag that folder into iPhoto's open window. An extra step but it does afford some extra measure of user control and security against uploads going bad.

  • Aperture 3.2.1 not importing all photos from card reader

Aperture is not importing all photos from the card reader, i tried importing 720 photos and it was only seeing 480 photos, the card reader stopped reading, aperture was saying "loading assets", still,  like if it was still reading the card. and the first time it loaded the pictures the import button was not availllable once not all the photos were not all loaded when the loading assets message stopped.
i  had to force quit aperture, ejecting the card from the reader, aperture, on relaunch was still seeing the card as present but it was ejected from the finder , and  physicaly on the desk.
i had to go in Apple Acticity monitor to find a process that was still active , someting called mass media and had to stop it.
my work around was manually copying the content of the card on the external hard drive about  9 gig of photos on the external HDD where i keep my aperture photos.  copying 9 gig of photos over usb2 took an 50 minutes.
i had jpegs raw and some videos in 720p
    i have a MBP 2.26 ghz 13"
a Canon 7D and a Lexar 16 gig compact flash card.

I'm sorry, but I can't understand this paragraph. It seems like the "loading assets" message stopped but not all the photos were showing up in the import window. Were any of the photos duplicates? How long did you wait until you forced quit?
When you say "the first time it loadedthe pictures" you mean you attempted before and got the same result?
It does seem like it is either getting stuck on an image or is taking a long time to read the images off the card since the import button is not available...
When you copied the files to your external drive, you were then able to import to Aperture?
    Thanks

  • Lightroom will not import my photos.   It did up to a week ago.   I have changed cards and cameras (both worked two weeks ago).   I can import the photos to Picasa and iPhoto

Lightroom will not import my photos.   It did up to a week ago.   I have changed cards and cameras (both worked two weeks ago).   I can import the photos to Picasa and iPhoto.   I get the following error message:
Some import operations were not performed.
The following files were not imported because they could not be read  [followed by a list of the files I wanted to import]
Thumbnails show up.  LR just will not import them.
Any idea what is going wrong?

If the Import button is not clickable, that means that Lightroom thinks you have no new photos to import (one possible reason is that they are duplicates)
So, you need to figure out why Lightroom thinks that. The way I would do this is to search your Library module for at least one of the photos, by file name. To do this, you would follow all 4 of these steps in sequence:
Click on All Photographs in the Catalog Panel on the left of the Library Module
Turn off all Filters (Ctrl-L or Cmd-L once or twice)
Expand all stacks: Photo->Stacking->Expand All Stacks
Search for one or more of the photos using the Filter Bar (press backslash), search by File Name

    New Photo app on Mac.
How can I (automatically) import new photos of the photo stream on my local disc (Mac)? Don't want to use new icloud service. Simply import.
With iPhoto every new photo was automatically imported and saved on my local disk (with "full resolution" that's what I only need). In the new photo app I have still my photo stream and when I move a photo (drag and drop from the photo stream) to a new album it indicates a (plus). My understanding is that the photo is now copied to my local disk. But when I deleted the photo in the photo stream it was also deleted in the album !?
If that is the case I can use the photo stream only until I reach the max of 1.000 photos, then I have to delete photos and I will have no copy left.
How can I "physically" copy a photo of the photo stream to my local disk? I just want to "transfer" all pictures taken with Ipads, Iphones to my central storage on the Mac. Please don't propose to connect it via iTunes (cable) to the Mac.
    Any other suggestions?
    thx

The amazing device cannot do it because no amazing developer has written an app for it.  There is some interest, others have asked, but i have a hunch that the market is fairly limited, and no developer has jumped at the chance just yet.
Any sort of tethered approach means try to feed the material to the pad thru the cck.  Which means the app would have to use the allowed/existing cck pathway in a manner that does not violate the sandbox rules.  That may be the problem.

The "Do not import duplicates" box is checked for all imports but is not working.  This is both for my Nikon DSLR, my Canon S-95 and my iPhone.
