How do I open a spreadsheet in Libre Office?

I have a new iMac with Maverick 10.9.5, and downloaded Libre Office 4.3.1.2
I want to download spreadsheets from a government website, and always open in Libre Office.
I don't want to download in Numbers, export to excel, and export again to Libre Office.
Where is a setting to "always use Libre Office"?
If I single-click the downloaded spreadsheet, then right-click, "open with" and hit Libre Office, then it appears as a spreadsheet, but crashes when I try to sort the columns.

Right click the downloaded spreadsheet, and choose Get Info.
Under Open With, select LibreOffice.
Click the Change All button, confirm the action, and close the window.
Now, the selected file type will always be opened with LibreOffice.

If they're Word document, just create a new document and use the File > Place command. Browse to the Word document, choose it and then shift click the page.
This will create as many pages as you'll need.

I don't know what file formats LibreOffice supports, but my guess is it can only handle the OpenXML format (new Office docs).

On 12/31, my iPad lost my spreadsheets for Numbers. I use about 6 spreadsheets to keep track of my info. Up til that day the spreadsheets worked perfectly.
Now Numbers opens with no spreadsheets.
Not sure what's going on, since the spreadsheets are still available on my iPhones and other iPad.

If you plan to share or work with people who regulary use MS Excel you should not try to use this in Numbers. You will have constant problems with how each program translates the formatting.
If you want to use Numbers, use it exclusively. If it is for your job use the tool your company uses.

First you will need to unarchive the file. It is in a compress CPIO archive format. The Mac can't handle that natively, and neither can Office, libreoffice or openoffice. You will need to get a tool that will work with this. I did some cusory investigation for you and found that some folks have used an app called "The Unarchiver" which is a free app from the app store.
Once you have unarchived the file, you will have a .xltx (xml formatted template file for Excel). The office suites mentioned should then work for you.

I wish I could help. I'm not at all expert in how to revive such a document. Does Quick Look work? Select the file in Finder and press the Spacebar. If the PDF Quicklook preview image is still good, you could screen capture that.
You haven't said what version of Numbers you are using. V3.5, the latest, no longer is a package that can be examined, so I can't tell you how to navigate to the image of the content.

I have trouble opening imported Excel spreadsheets in Numbers on my iMac. I have Mountain Lion 10.8.2. Previously I tried a demo of Office Mac that has expired. When I try to open an Excel spreadsheet I get a message to buy Office Mac. I've tried to put the demo application in the trash but I still can't open the Excel spreaddsheet and get a message that Excel is in the trash and can't open the spreadsheet.

In the Finder, click on an Excel file (.xls) to select it, press command-I to Get Info.
In the Info window, expand the Open with...section.
Click the pop-up menu bar in that section and choose Numbers '09.
Click the Change All button below the menu.
Repeat with a current version (.xlsx) file.

PS: Unless you have something vital that you're storing in the Trash, you might also want to Empty the Trash to get rid of the Excel trial that's expired.

How do i open a corrupt spreadsheet?

I have a financial spreadsheet i accidently cut and pasted source code into a cell and it crashed Numbers.
Now when i open that spreadsheet, it goes to load, appears on the screen briefly, then i assume, loads the source code i accidently pasted in there and crashes over and over again.
It's stored on icloud so i can't go into my time machine and get an older version, i also can't open an older version on icloud as i have not found a way to do so without opening it first.
I cannot open it on icloud.com or export it in a different format, it crashes there as well.
I know MS Excel has a feature to open a spreadsheet in 'safe mode' which is a scaled down version in such cases.
Does Numbers have a way to open a 'light' version of a corrupt spreadsheet?

Drag the attachment to your Desktop. Double-click on the file. It should unzip automatically. If it does not then download and install The Unarchiver 3.6.1.
Although this will de-archive the attachment, there is little you can do with it without Excel or something similar.
You can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion.

Windows (Excel spreadsheet app) will not open a Numbers document. In Numbers, Menu > File > Export To > Excel... and then send it.
It will most likely be zipped (a Numbers document is actually a folder of files that looks like a document).
If you are swapping spreadsheets backwards and forwards between Numbers and Excel, glitches will build up. Export and import are not perfect, but at least Numbers makes some attempt. Excel makes no attempt. You will be forever fixing those glitches.
Try Open Office or Libre Office (free) or use Excel for Mac to ensure compatibility.

This is a basic computer skill you might want to learn. You can always control which application opens any document, and the steps below apply to any Mac or Windows computer you use:
Method 1: Drag the document icon on top of the application (Word, Pages, LibreOffice...) icon and release. The system will open the document in the application you dragged it to.
