How do I open an iMac G5 17" (early 2006) (intellified)?

Hi all - i tried searching but only found something for the 20" (i realize the instructions may be the same but since I don't know i figured i'd ask). I need to replace a bad internal hard drive. It appears that the "intellified" G5 iMac is not as easy to open as the previous G5 - i read where opening the 20" requires a special tool (a special access card - part 922-7172 - may be required to open the front bezel). My questions: (1) does anyone know if you NEEd this part or is there another way to open it (like maybe using an old credit card?); (2) Assuming you DO need the special card, is there anywhere to get one?; and (3) does anyone know if there are insructions available on the web for opening this Mac and replacing the hard drive?
Thanks in advance
Mark

The only so-called instructions I know of; iMac Disassembly
BTW, your Mac is not a G5. It hasn't a lot in common with the G5, but a similar design factor. G5 referrred to the PowerPC CPU manufactured by IBM/Motorola that Mac was based on.
Your Mac is an iMac Intel Core Duo.

  • How do I split open an iMac?

My 24 inch iMac has died. It seems that the power supply is the culprit. Without knowing for sure, I am going to open the back of the computer and take a look. Perhaps there is something as simple as a blown fuse. Task one is to figure out how to split open the iMac. Any suggestions? Is there a video to help me through the process? Any help is appreciated.

Snow Leopard's Startup Disk pref can’t see Yosemite volumes. So the only way to switch from Snow Leopard to Yosemite is to do what Niel mentioned. Doesn't matter whether it's connected by USB or Firewire, although performance via FW would be faster.
Are you saying that Yos/10.10, as a volume located in a mounted external drive won't appear as an option in Snow Leopard's Startup Disc, in Sys Prefs? I've never heard this one before. AFAIK any mounted volume, regardless of OS, should appear there. I would think that, if it appears in the Boot Picker/Startup Manager it would also appear and could be booted to from Snow's Startup Disk. I can't test this myself, since I don't have Yos. Is what you are saying documented somewhere?

Let me see if I've gotten this right! You want to remove an account from BOTH machines? Do this for your new machine first, then for the other.
Click the Apple logo on the top left of the screen, System Preferences, Users and Groups (under Systems), unlock the lock in the window if its locked (you need to know the password), select the user that you wish to remove, and click the - sign next to the + sign for Login options. A window will pop up with some options. Select Delete this user and securely, and click 'Delete user'.
After this, do an update from the App Store.
Thats all there is to it.
For the other machine repeat the process except for one thing. Before you delete the user in this case YOU, you will have to give Administrator priviledges to your son bu checking the box 'Allow user to administer this computer'.
Do NOT do anything from Finder ... if you dont know how to fix the consequences of the problems caused.
There is no need to unauthorize your iTunes account on your new machine. Do it on the old machine though.

  • How do I open MS Office 2000 Word Processor on iMac

Used to use Microsoft 2000 Word Processor on Dell Laptop.  My iMac is 2 weeks old and documents have successfully been transferred from the Dell to Mac via Maxtor external hard drive.   How can I open the Word Processing documents - NOT to use, but to read. WPS is the extension. There is plenty of discussion on MS Word, but not MS Word Processor

Just quick view from finder .
Simply locate folder and file within finder window .
Right click and choose open with quick view
    Or download

If an image opens in a different application but you want it to always open in Preview when you double-click it, do this one time: Control-click the file, let go of the Control key, press the Option key, then choose Always Open With > Preview. Or, select the image file, choose Get Info from the File menu, then change the "Opens with:" pop-up menu choice to Preview.

Use Microsoft Excel or a compatible app.
    I just get "Import Error".
In what app? Or are we playing Twenty Questions?
Excel 2008 should be able to open it, but not play any of the macros. Excel 2011 should be able to open it and play the macros -- unless they contain Win-specific code. OpenOffice/NeoOffice/LibreOffice's Calc should also be able to open it, but the extent to which it will be able to play the macros also depends on the code.
