How do I open as smart object whilst retaining the images original scale? (for architectural drawings)

A simple question I know but I cannot seem to import the vector file at its original scale into photoshop. I am aware that you can transform the smart object once imported to photoshop but im sure there is an easier way for the accuracy required with architectural drawing scales.
Any help would be much appreciated to save me a little time.
Thanks

Thanks for your responses.
Despite setting the canvas size and dpi in vector works, open as smart object function opens the vector file on a separate sheet in photoshop and therefore defaults to an incorrect size for some reason. The solution was in fact far more simple, drag and drop directly on to the preset photoshop file rather than using the open as function. This made me feel rather silly, but at least the problem is resolved!
Another problem I have come across though is the issue of line weights. When printing directly from Vectorworks the lines are far crisper than the photoshop version despite using smart objects which is supposed to retain the vector lines? Would you know of any reason for this?
Thanks again for your help.

  • How make Ps save its smart objects directly on the current folder project?

How make Ps save its smart objects directly on the current folder project?

Assuming you are on windows - Right click on the smart object layer in the layer panel and select export smart object. This will create a psb file than can then be opened later by photoshop using the normal File>Open.

  • Is there a way to open a smart object, but get the original instead of a temp file?

Working with large amounts of images and PSD files.
    1.  We create a smart object from say, a .jpg file on a layer, then filter, etc.
    2.  Double clicking the smart object creates a new window with that object as a .psB file.
    3.  When the file is saved and closed, the .psB file is deleted.
This is how smart objects work, we know.
What we need to do is:
    1.  We create a smart object from say, a .jpg file on a layer, then filter, etc.
    2. Double clicking the smart object will open the ORIGINAL .jpg file
    3.  When the file is saved, the original .jpg file is saved in its altered form, and is reflected in the .psd file
We realize that Smart objects were created for reasons, of which we are aware.
Yet, we have several designers who use the same .jpg's but want the original to be changed so that the next developer has that changed .jpg.
    Trie thus far:
ScriptListener cannot be used to tie it to a double click event on a smart object, because when the smart object is created it is already a copy of the original.
Creating a variable to call the original does not 'appear' to work, because it is accessing the .psB file instead of the original .psD file.
I think with early versions of PS there was a way to insert an image like a .jpg into a layer, and the link to that .jpg was retained. Thus, when you double click on that layer, the original .jpg is brought up to be edited, the .jpg file is now altered, and is reflected in the .psd file after finishing.

    No, not too late.
InDesign is for layout for press in this case.
Photoshop is for design, which is using the .jpg's.
I'm half way there, but stuck at:
Getting a file location reference when the .jpg is first brought into PS as a layer.
Getting a script to write the location of the file into the medata for the PSD in some field
Reading back the metadata file location for the .jpg and bringing it back into the PSD again.
Any help would really be appreciated.
I can make the completed script(s) available when its complete, as this has possibilities for other uses, batch process, and more.

  • How do I convert my smart object back into the layers I made it from?

I was working with 100 layers or so and i converted it to a smart object to work with easier.  However some of the layers and layer modes don't interact properly with the background that is separate from the smart object.  There doesn't seem to be an option to release layers within the smart object.  I attempted to solve the problem by dragging the layers from the smart object editable file but it didn't line up within the original file...extremely frustrating.  Any solutions? PS6 BETA Lion OSX

It was created inside the file.  They were differnt dimensions though because the layers selected to become a smart object had different bounds beyond the canvas.
The issue was that once I dragged layers from the editable file that was the smart object I would attempt to realign them BUT I have so many adjustments with masks that we'ren't linked so they wouldn't move with my realignment move(even a control+t)...I ended up going back in and relinking them all(which took really long) in order to realign things.
But really it would be so much easier if i could have just clicked re-add layers to file or something.
    No problem Howard, thanks anyway.

  • Unable to Save my Smart Object without "Flattening the Image"

    Hey there, I am helpless.
I am Using Photoshop CC 2014, always the newest version, on a mac.
Here's the problem: I am usually working in PSDs with many layers, and some smart objects. Inside of the smart objects, I have content that I can change.
So when I save the contents inside of a Smart Object, it also changes them inside of the main PSD.
BUT - since months, I can't save the changes inside of a Smart Object. Photoshop is telling me:
Can't save this document back to its original file format. Flatten layers and discard extra data as necessary and choose File > Save again.
When I flatten the image, the Smart Object has no usage for me, because it's like a rasterized layer.
Someone help me?  I didn't find a solution in the internet!
Btw: I already tried reinstalling Photoshop. The issue is still there.
    Thank you.

If that is not the case please read this with regard to general trouble-shooting, restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved might be of special interest:

  • PS CS5.1 crashes when using file open but not with bridge or "open as smart object"

I'm using a Mac with Snow Leopard and Photoshop CS5.1 Extended
When i try to open a file largen than ~50MB with double click in finder or with file>open in PS, the program loads the psd and shows it, then 2-3 seconds later PS crashes. If the psd is under ~50MB everything is fine.
If i open it with file>open as smart object or via the mini bridge, everything is fine, and i can work with it.
    How can this be fixed?

  • Files Open as Smart Objects

I am in the process of trying to get better with CS5. For some reason, all my files seem to open as Smart Objects. When the file opens, it is a RAW file, there is no 'lock' on the background layer. How do I get a file to open in a 'normal' way.
    Thanks

In the camera raw dialog under Workflow Options, uncheck Open as Smart Objects.

  • How to Turn Off "Open As Smart Object" ??

Help ! I am using PS CS3. I opened a JPG file as Camera Raw using "Open As Smart Object" just to see what it was all about. Now, when I use just "Open As" to open a JPG as Camera Raw, at the bottom of the CR dialogue, instead of "Open Image" it continues to say "Open Smart Object" even though I did not specify that I wanted to Open As Smart Object. How do I get back to just Open Image in the CR dialog. I have the latest version - is it me or it a bug ???

Links do not seem to have a high discoverability in a software.
A drop down list would not take much more screen real estate, I wonder why they got scrapped in favor of hyperlinks.

  • Significance of Open as Smart Object in Photoshop

I'm struggling to see the significance of the "Open as Smart Object in Photoshop" feature in Lightroom 2 + CS3? I can't see how this is any different/better than just using the "Edit in Photoshop CS3" option?
Can someone please explain the difference and why I would want to use one over the other?

I believe there is one reason. With a file opened as a smart object, you
can go back to ARC and change something. You cant do that when opened as a
    regular file.

  • Open as "Smart Object" from ACR to PS questions.

I have 2 questions associated with opening from ACR as a Smart Object in Photoshop. I'm using CS4.
    1. Is there a way to retrieve the original filename (complete with path) using a script or a setting somewhere to do this? I'm currently using Bridge Talk to ask Bridge what the active folder is then adding that to the document's .name property and taking off the " as Smart Object-1" part. Then I add a .psd extension to it and then I have to save it to retain that name unless there's an answer to #2 below.
    2. Is there a way to change the Document's name as described above from "Filename as Smart Object-1" to "Filename.psd" without actually saving it?
It seems to me there would be a simple way that I might be overlooking here.
    Thanks
    Mike

Sorry, I guess I need to explain better.
I wrote a script to do this, but here is this portion of the workflow:
    1. Open CR2 file in ACR and make adjustments.
    2. Open as Smart Object in PS.
    3. Script Events Manager activates this script on Document Open, checks to see if it was opened as a Smart Object. We'll assume it did.
    4. The script asks me if I want to make another layer. I pick yes. The script copies the SO layer, sets an inverted mask, and opens to edit settings in ACR again.
    5. I adjust the settings for that layer in ACR and click OK.
The script will keep looping between 4 and 5 as long as I pick YES.
This gives me more local control of areas. If I want to bring out eyes a bit, I can up contrast, saturation, sharpness, brightness, exposure, or whatever looks best for the eyes in ACR, then unmask the eyes as much as I want on that layer in Photoshop. There is more data to pull from in the RAW file vs trying to do the same thing within Photoshop.
Opening as a regular image file then converting to a SO doesn't give me the same control. I would have to reopen the file separately, make the adjustments in ACR, open to PS then copy that document and paste as a new layer in the original.
Duplicating the document might work also, but I can also just save as .psd at that point since I'd have to know the path name by then anyway. I'll give that a try, though, and see if it might work better. The only catch with the save part is it slows me down waiting for it to write the file and if I have 5+ SO layers, it takes awhile. Once I unmask where I want, I flatten to a rasterized layer and continue.
    Thanks

  • Open as smart object malfunction

A strange thing occurred. "Open as smart object in Photoshop" does not work for one photo from photo session.
It works for all the other but for this one it is clickable but nothing is being opened.

  • Open as Smart Object as Layers in Photoshop?

I apologize if this has been addressed already, but I am looking for a way to open Smart Objects as LAYERS.  I do compositing work and would like to retain as much information as possible by using Smart Objects PRIOR to going into Photoshop.  My current workflow is to highlight the photos in Lightroom CC > Open as Smart Object in Photoshop CC > Manually Drag layers from each open file in Photoshop to main PSD.
Edit - Opening as Layers in Photoshop then applying the Camera Raw Filter is not a good work around, information is lost.

I must still be doing something wrong here..............
You have the wrong expectation—namely because you don't grasp the concept. A smart object is not a linked file.  It's a new file all on its own (in PSB format) with no connection to the original file at all.
    davepinminn wrote:
…I can open my raw (.dng) into Photoshop as a smart object.  And in PS, I can open the smart object into ACR.  Works fine.  And I can change stuff.  For example, if I change the exposure from -.25 to +.20, it changes perfectly in PS, as I'd expect.  But, I'm still not getting the changes back to the original raw (.dng) file…
There is no reason why the changes made to a Smart Object oject should be refleftef to a totally unrelated file.
    davepinminn wrote:
…Do I need to do something different to get the changes back to the original file…
Yes. you have to go back to that original file and apply the changes directly to it.  In a previous post, Jeff Schewe told you of a shortcut to achieve that:
    Jeff Schewe wrote:
When you are in the Camera Raw SO with ACR open, go to the main flyout menu and select Export settings to XMP. This will write the new image settings from the SO to the xmp metadata. Then in Lightroom, select Read metadata from file in the main Metadata menu. That will bring in all the settings of the raw SO back into Lightroom. So, while not automatic, it's not as bad as writing down the settings and entering them by hand.

  • How do I disable linked smart-object auto-update/refresh?

Working in the CC3D features, I am constantly making changes to my bump map. Every time I step-backwards, or make a significant change to the bump texture (smart object?), CC auto-saves the layer. This specific file is a very very large document (3 gigs in the bump texture layer alone), and the 3D layer has lots of lights and is very complex. This auto-refresh/update really bogs down the time that it would take me to make my changes. I have a very fast machine (I know it's fast, I dont need to list my specs), and I have all shadows disabled.
    How do I disable linked smart-object auto-update/refresh?

If you do not like a feature like smart objects there is nothing forcing you to use it. Use some other features to do what you want. Please don't ask Adobe to introduce bug into smart object support.
You could work on your bump maps textures in external files. When your done some time in the future you could edit your project with the smart object layer and use replace smart object. Only then will all smart filters be applied to the smart layer with the replaced smart object.
Or if by CC Auto save Layer you referring to CC Generate feature you can disable that feature.
I have no idea what your referring to when you write "CC auto-saves the layer" being a feature. I know CC Generate will write layers out as web files but that more a Web feature then a 3d feature.  Where do you see your layer being saved?
