How do I open files from an old version of iPhoto in Photoshop Elements 10 without losing date taken, camera settings etc?
I replaced my old iMac (Tiger) and saved the library from iPhoto. I installed all the old pictures in iPhoto on the new iMac (Mt..Lion). I received the new Photoshop Elements 10 for Christmas, installed it, and imported the iPhoto ligrary into PSE Organizer. All my pictures are now in iPhoto and Photoshop Elements 10 Organizer. The file info is available in iPhoto but all PSE 10 shows is the file size and date the pictures were transferred in. Even worse, when I try to open a picture from iPhoto library in PSE 10 Editor I get a message saying PSE 10 "does not recognize this type file".

There are links to the right of your question. If they do not help you will have to ask in the iPhoto forum.

How can I restore files from my old iMac to this new purchased MacBook Air? I am using time machine backup in my old imac.
Hi,
Try Target Disk Mode
OS X Yosemite: Transfer files between two computers using target disk mode
There is also Migration Assistant.

If you can get both computers on the Internet at the same time without re-cabling, you have the connection infrastructure needed to enable file sharing and share those files.
That said, many users find it easier to use FireWire Target Disk mode to treat the old computer as a big Hard drive, and just drag and drop the files, or use Migration Assistant or Setup Assistent.
There is a really good guide here:

There are many methods, however you are specific about the type of files you want to move. The first time your Mac turns on it begins with Setup Assistant and asks if you want to migrate from another Mac or PC, you must have missed that. I'd recommend looking over Pondini's Guide and following the directions for using Migration Assistant. You can find them by clicking How to Use Migration Assistant From PC to Mac 10.7 Lion.
If you have specific files you are attempting to migrate then moving them to an external HD and then just dragging and dropping them from the EHD to the Mac would be very simple. Apple explains migration strategies in Switch 101 -

Use the Migration Assistant, or the Setup Assistant, or use a network, Target Disk mode, or an external drive to move them manually.

i just bought a new macbook w/ mtn lion. when i transferred data from my old macbook over, it created another user name (i called it "old computer"). That's actually good--I'm not going to be accessing old files frequently--except for music, which i want on my new user name. How do i move files from my "old comp" account to my new one? Is there a way to easily move large #'s of files, or just one by one? I've googled extensively but can only find instructions for OSX 10.6 and previous, which talks about the "Shared folder," which I can't seem to find.

That's actually bad. Peruse Pondini's Setup New Mac guide and seriously consider starting over. -
How do I open files from an external drive? It's plugged into the second slot to the end. Did I plug it into the right place and how do I find the drive when trying to attach a file in an email?
Files on an external hard drive open just like files on the internal drive - but I get the idea that you are having a problem just finding and seeing those files. Is that correct?

How can I download music from another computer's music library to my ipod without losing my own music?
You'll want to enable Manually Manage Music and Videos. Once you do that you'll be able to drag and drop the music from the computer to the iPod.

How do I transfer files from my old PC to my new MAC?
My new iMac arrived on Monday and I successfully downloaded the drivers for printers, etc. Now I need to move files from my old PC to my iMac. Is there a faster way of doing it other than copying files to a thumb drive and loading on my Mac? What about files on my MacBook Pro that need to be moved? How do I do that? I'm not really techie so please be detailed about any cables, etc. that I might need to purchase. Many thanks.
The easiest way is to put the fiels on an external HD and drag and drop them. Here are some links I'd STRONGLY recommend bookmarking and using immediately.

Help!
I've had an iMac 21.5 for approximately 3.5 years.
I have Aperture 3 (with loads photos) and iTunes etc on my current iMac.
I have just bought a new 21.5 iMac with all the latest upgrades etc.
As of yet I have not even taken the new iMac out of the box.
How do I:
1. prepare the old iMac to get ready to transfer files
2. actually transfer the files!
Also!
Once everything is transferred how do I make my iMac "safe" to sell? I don't want old personal data left on there for someone to have a good old snoop!
My original iMac was not supplied with any operating discs etc. It was all set up and ready to go.
Thanks.Regarding the old iMac. Just delete your USER NAME from the Control Panel. Go into System Preferences - then User/Groups and delete your account from there.
Just a bit of advice though before you do all this, go and buy yourself a remote Hard Drive, they're really good value today and copy off all of your sacred files from your old computer onto the new drive. You could also do the same via the Backup.app
It's well worth doing.... You can easily delay the switch over for a few days and you'll then have a backup disc that you'll start to use again and again. -
How do I transfer files from my old Power Mac Mini to my new one?
Oops...thought I had to write the question in the above spot.
Question: How do I transfer my files from my old Power Mac Mini to my new Intel based Mac Mini? From what I read, I needed a 40/80 cable, which I bought. However, I only have one monitor.
(I tried to copy files onto a blank dvd, but it wouldn't format and kept spitting the disk out) (?)

Jolly makes a good point about screen sharing.
I prefer the firewire approach just because I have had more problems with ethernet connections than with firewire connections. Both options work, firewire has just been easier for me when the operating system on the machines are different. Read the options and post back if you would like additional coaching.
