How do I OPEN (not copy) a file in an external editor?

I create digital collages and scrapbooks, and I have roughly 200 GB of digital source files containing images of things like ribbons, papers, etc.
I'm using Aperture for two things: organization and basic editing of my photos, and organization of my digital source files (non-photo). I use Photoshop for advanced editing.
The organization part is working great: I have nested keyword groups and smart albums that are making searching through my supplies much easier. But when I find something I want to use in a collage, I want to open it in Photoshop WITHOUT making a copy. I never alter my source files--I just drag them onto the collage I'm creating and manipulate them there.
Aperture is making a copy of the file, even if no changes are made. Not only that, but it's adding a black backing to PNG files and ignoring their transparency, so the image that opens in PS isn't even usable.
Is there a way to switch off the copy feature and just open the file? Is there a way to get Aperture to respect the transparency? Am I going about this all wrong?

Thanks for the reply--at least I know I'm not crazy.
I have imported the files as referenced masters. But I'm trying to avoid having to decide on something in Aperture, then go through multiple levels of folders in Finder to find the actual file. Is there an easier way?

  • IMac is not booting - How can I copy my files to an external drive

    Hello,
my iMac (late 2009 model, OS X 10.7.4) is not booting anymore. The iMac stopps booting at the Apple logo and the spinning gear.
I tried a couple of things that I found here in the community but nothing worked.
start in safe mode => iMac shuts off after a couple of seconds
start with safe boot (Shift-Command-V) => I'll get a couple of error messages, e.g. disk0s2: I/O error.   SATA WARNING: Enable Drive PHY PM failed
reset the NVRAM/PRAM => no change
But when I try to get access on the HD with the FireWire Target Disk Mode, I can see the following folders: Applications, Library, System, Users. But the statusbar shows 0 items for each folder and it shows that the HD has 650 GB available. I have the original 1TB HD. When I try to start OS X from an external drive I can see the same folders. I tried Data Rescue 3 to scan my files, but the software stopps with an error.
My TimeMachine backup was not working, so I have no actual backup and need to find a solution to copy my files to an external drive.
Instead of Data Rescue 3, I can use TechTools Pro 6 alternatively.
Would Data Rescue 3 find files if I erase and create a new partition on the HD?
What I found out so far, it looks like a corrupted file system.
Have anyone an idea or a tip, how I can copy my files?
I would be more than happy if someone can help me.
Thank you very much for all answers in advance.

The internal drive is failing, or has failed. You may not be able to save the data.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot into Recovery (command-R at startup) or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in the support article linked below, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
How to back up and restore your files
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.

    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

You should be able to open the zipped file by double clicking on it.

  • How do I not copy hidden files associated with photos

I want to put photos on my new digital picture frame. It can be plugged into a USB port and looks like a disk drive.
I select and drag the photos I want to the device, but there is a hidden file for each one that gets copied as well. The device doesn't know what to do with those files. They don't cause a problem, but do take up space.
How can I keep from copying those files?

I'd like to be able to see the hidden files in the Finder so that I (hopefully) could select them and delete them before transferring the files to my digital photo frame.
When you saw and deleted them using Terminal, were they present on your HD, or did you only look at the files already transferred to the USB photo frame device?
The hidden "._" files are "resource fork" files, and when you make hidden files visible in Finder you might find that they exist only on the USB device, having been created there by the transfer process itself - see:
*Apple Double Format Creates File Name With the Prefix '._'*
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA20578?viewlocale=en_US
Also take a look at [Blue Harvest|http://www.zeroonetwenty.com/blueharvest].
They don't cause a problem, but do take up space.
How much space? If not excessive, then leaving them alone would also be an option!

  • How do i copy my files from my external hard drive onto my imac

how do i copy my files from my external hard drive onto my imac

You should be able to 'migrate them' without having to do so during a reinstall, from an external drive. In some cases, you may be able to use TimeMachine software even if the drive had not been used as a backup.
The usual way, though, is to drag & drop copy from one to another (volume or folder) you created in there and have open. Or drag an item on top of the icon of a hard disk drive when it is mounted on the desktop. I'm used to working with open folders and windows, because that works best; and then see if I want to change how things look inside their destination. This helps should I later want to burn them to a DVD and have it correct. And I want to know where they are.
I had more links to some information about importing or migrating data into a Mac from an external, a week ago, but can't find them now. A few good links to pages, but I think I posted what I did find directly to answer someones question about it; and believe the info was in an Apple Support article about TimeMachine, near the lower part of the page with blue words with a disclosure triangle, so you could read more in that page. But I don't believe these two are correct in that TimeMachine (some versions) only allow wireless backup to a drive in a base station unit such as Apple sells, for this. The link I saw simply said how to work around not using the wireless stuff. Maybe it was a dated item, not in these?
See a main general portal to TimeMachine support,
    here: http://www.apple.com/support/timemachine/
Or basics that may not provide optional copy methods:
Mac Basics - Time Machine backs up your mac:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1427
Perhaps a search of Apple Support database (or even ASC discussions?) would yield ideas, and perhaps find what may work for the kind of files you want to copy, and where they can be found & used later. Are the files for specific applications? Or images, music, etc?
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • How do I open a raw NEF file in Photoshop cs6? [was: Raw Files]

How do I open a raw NEF file in photoshop cs6?

Browse to the folder in Bridge, then right-click Open in Camera Raw, then in ACR, Open.
Or if you’re already in Photoshop: File or Photoshop if on a Mac / Open / browse to the file / Open.
If you get an error that the format is not supported then either the camera is too new or you’ve used an obsolete version of Nikon products like Transfer or ViewNX to copy or view the NEFs and they are corrupted.
Help / Updates is how you get the latest version of the Camera Raw plug-in.
You can use a utility from here to fix the corruption:

  • Could not copy the file "C:\Microsoft.WITDataStore.dll" because it was not found.

    Hi All,
I need to use "Microsoft.TeamFoundation.WorkItemTracking.Common, Version=11.0.0.0" dll in my code.
But when I try to build my application I get the below error.
"Could not copy the file "C:\Microsoft.WITDataStore.dll" because it was not found."
And when I try to include version 12 of the same dll , code gets build successfully. And when I try to consume the code(which uses the dll) I get
'Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.TeamFoundation.WorkItemTracking.Client.DataStoreLoader,
Version=11.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a' or one of its dependencies.
The system cannot find the file specified."
how do I go ahead with this..??
    Thanks
    Uma.K

    Hi Uma,
You might check whether the version 11 of the assembly is referenced or added into soruce control. When use the referenced files, please use the relative path for building. If the version 11 of the assembly is not added, please add it to source control and
    make sure it's referenced correctly.
It would be better to let us know the TFS version that you're using. And you can also use version 12 if the assembly works fine. If you have any other concerns, elaborate your scenario with more details.

  • How do I open a new original file on adobe

How do I open a new original file on adobe, and how do I merge exiting files under one title.

The iOS reader doesn't create pdfs. Adobe does sell a CreatePDF app.
The iOS reader does not merge pdfs any more than the Reader for Mac or PC. I cannot find any reference to the CreatePDF merging two different pdfs.
Adobe does a have a web createpdf service that does combine pdfs into one pdf (createpdf.acrobat.com), but I doubt it would work from an iOS device. But you could ask the the acrobat.com forum.

  • HT204382 hello somebody, how can I open/listen to yousendit file on mac? thnx

hey guys  how do I open/listen to yousendit file on mac?  Thnx

To me you have left out the critical information on how you are connected to this other Mac.
Presumably if you can see the other Mac's drive you can start your iTunes with the option/alt key held down and guide it to the iTunes Library.itl file on the other computer.  That is starting from its library, not just using its media.  You do not do anything with preferences,  Do not touch those.  Many people make the mistake of thinking that is how you use media in another location.  You can point all you want but iTunes will not look there.  It will, though, start storing all your files you add to the iTunes library in that other location from that point on which will result in a fine organizational mess.

  • I have a new imac21.5 how do I open Appleworks6 Data Base files?

I have a new imac21.5 how do I open Appleworks6 Data Base files? And how do I access Quicken files?

You won't be able to use AppleWorks on that computer. You will need to open your AW database files on an older computer that can run AW6 then export your database files to a standard text format such as CSV or tab-delimited.
You can then import those files into some other database program such as iData 3.1.18.
Quicken does not currently work with Lion but Intuit has announced they will issue a new version sometime this year. You can try using another application that can import Quicken's datafiles or export the data to format other applications can use. Or you can switch to Quicken Essentials that does work with Lion.

I am new with iMac and I am trying to copy some file from my external HDD that a used with my PC but it does not let me also I can't delete anything from this HDD using the finder. Can somebody help me , please?

No, unfortunately, when you format a drive, it will erase all the contents. So you will need to find a temporary "storage" place to put the stuff using a PC so you have access to it. Then reformat using Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities). If only using with mac, format Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and use GUID Partition scheme under Partitions/Options. After formatting, you can drag the files back.

  • How do I "move" (not copy) keynotes from my MacBook Pro to my iMac via sharing?

How do I "move" (not copy) keynotes from my MacBook Pro to my iMac via sharing?

Whenever you transfer something from one drive or volume to another, it is copied and the original remains where it was no matter the method you use. It is so by design: just in case you were to delete it on the one drive, you still have it on the other. However, if you no longer want the original, simply delete it and empty the trash.
