How do I open old files without application extensions on them?

I have lots of 1995 or so files written from a mac on 3.5 diskets most of which I have read onto disk.
But they have no extensions and I can't seem to open them.
If I had to guess I would say they are canvas, possibly powerpoint but using powerpoint 98and canvas 7 I can"t seem to open them.
I have a G3 powerbook.  a G3 tower both running OS9, a powerPC macmini running OS10 and OS9 in emulation, a PC portable running System10 and another PC portable running XP.
What are my options short of seppuku?
I need to get these files to teach a course.
Thanks

No. The attached is the simplest way of modifying it to do as you want. I've
sped things up a little to make it obvious.
    > Will the array be able to keep all the data, is there a way i can do

You already are. You're making the arrays as you go along so only the memory
needed for the data that's in the plot is in use at any one time. To do it
    without storing
arrays at all you'd need to keep retrieving the data from
the XYgraph, adding the new datapoint and writing it back. Messy and I
    suspect incredibly inefficient.
You're going to use the memory in any case- a better option would be to
pre-initialise an array and fill it slowly. At the end of each 24 hour block
zap all the data and start again without destroying and recreating the
arrays. Or if you're only doing the 24 hour wipes to save memory, simply
start again at the start of the buffer woithout erasing the previous data
and you always have 24 hours of data to liik at once the system's running.
Do a search for keywords like "pre initialise" or "circular buffer" on

  • How do i open old files on my laptop

How do I open files from my old OS 9 operating system ( ie, iphotos ) on my newer OSX 10.5 laptop?

I'm kinda wondering about the same thing, here. I destroyed my old MacBook Pro, but the HD was ok and is in an Icy Box now.
I just can't believe my new MacBook Pro won't read the old HD info, such as the addressbook!
The old addressbook seems to be 4.1.2 and the new 5.0.3.
How do I get my contacts to the new laptop?

  • How can u open a file with .exe extension after it was unpacked?

Thank you Linc Davis for THE ARCHIVER, I was able to unpacked the program. However, after it was unpacked, I clicked the file wtih .exe extension and I got a message that this file will not be extract with this program. Is there another way to open file with .exe extension after it was unpacked by THE ARCHIVER...??? Any assistance is highly appreciated.

.exe files are Windows executables and do not run in OS X.  You would have to install Windows to use it.
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
    1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows XP w/Service Pak2, Vista, or Windows 7.  Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the computer into OS X or Windows.
    2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    3. VM Fusionand Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
    4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows applications without having to install Windows.  The Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
    5. VirtualBox is a new Open Source freeware virtual machine such as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.  It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM Fusion.
    6. Last is Q.  Q is a freeware emulator that is compatible with Intel Macs.  It is much slower than the virtualization software, Parallels and VM Fusion.
Note that Parallels and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech.com's Virtualization Benchmarking for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or Snow Leopard. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • How recover data from .dat file without application

    Dears,
We are active for a few customers who will use an windows application with, so far we can see, an flat file UNIX structure database. It seems that the structure of the database is nearly the structure who used in Berkeley DB. That means that we have analysed the database and found 'information blocks' like Btree, hash tables etc.
Is their any way to start reverse engineering on the single .dat file, if we have no idea what fields or record the application uses.
It is hard to believe but the software firm did not want to make the data free .. only for a lot of money .. so far we know the customer is the owner of the data, and the firm have to do that!
But we can't wait to get the data out this file ... we need some little more help.. to analyse the database and its block structure .. so when we know the database structure (the blocks) we can start analysing the data.
    Many thanks,
    for any reply
    Eric

    Hi Eric,
We've rarely seen applications using BDB use that extension for the database (it's of course possible to name the file any way you want, but generally the BDB database files use .db as the extension). So, I have a feeling you're facing a file created with another database engine. Nevertheless, here is what you can do:
    - determine the file's size on the disk and post it here;
    - run the following BDB utilities on the .dat file (we'll call it "file.dat")
    db_verify file.dat
    db_stat -d file.datand post here the output.
You can download Berkeley DB here:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/berkeley-db/db/index.html
For information on how to build on Windows:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/berkeley-db/db/ref/build_win/intro.html
Detailed description of the utilities I've mentioned:
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/berkeley-db/db/utility/db_verify.html
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/documentation/berkeley-db/db/utility/db_stat.html
Also, I would like to suggest you the following.
Since the data within the file is probably confidential, I can take this issue in private and open a Metalink SR for you. I can assure you that we will treat all information as confidential.
If you would like me to help this way, just send me an email at: andrei dot costache at oracle dot com.

  • How do I open old files in appleworks using OSX Lion?

I have some old spreadsheets in Appleworks.  Some were converted to numbers but a few haven't been.  When I attempt to open them in Lion, i get the message: "The document was created with an unsupported version of AppleWorks."  It's too late to open in a later version of AppleWorks.  Is there a translator available?

FYI another post from 2009 I found.
The iWork (no "s") applications - Keynote, Pages & Numbers - can only open AppleWorks 6 presentation, word processing & spreadsheet documents, respectively. They will not open any other type of AppleWorks 6 files or any AppleWorks 5 or any version of ClarisWorks files. The third-party application, EasyDraw, can open AppleWorks draw documents. There is nothing other than AppleWorks that can open paint or database documents.
    Interesting read.

How do I open old tiff files in PS CS5?

Opening old files in new versions should never be a problem - unless they have originally been saved in other applications that don't follow the file format specifications. Or the files are corrupted.
The other way around can sometimes be tricky because of new features not present in the old version.

Hi Ian, thanks for the suggestion.  That means I will have to write a vi that executes after the application loads and it has a list of all the vi's with front panels that I want to minimise.  Seems do-able as long as I can be sure the vi does its work after all the vi front panels have loaded.  Maybe a time delay before getting into the nitty gritty work of shutting front panels, will do that.  Cheers.
    Hi Herbert,
Assuming that you already know which are the VIs that will be loaded with FP, by placing and setting that Front Panel Windowtate property in each of those VIs (as first portion of code to be executed; could be made into an sub-vi), those VIs shall minimize themselves at when loaded (and run).
Hope I am correct up to this point of time as for my existing projects, only one FP has to be minimized
    Cheers!

Can I still open and work in Freehand on this new Mac?

Let me see if I've gotten this right! You want to remove an account from BOTH machines? Do this for your new machine first, then for the other.
Click the Apple logo on the top left of the screen, System Preferences, Users and Groups (under Systems), unlock the lock in the window if its locked (you need to know the password), select the user that you wish to remove, and click the - sign next to the + sign for Login options. A window will pop up with some options. Select Delete this user and securely, and click 'Delete user'.
After this, do an update from the App Store.
Thats all there is to it.
For the other machine repeat the process except for one thing. Before you delete the user in this case YOU, you will have to give Administrator priviledges to your son bu checking the box 'Allow user to administer this computer'.
Do NOT do anything from Finder ... if you dont know how to fix the consequences of the problems caused.
There is no need to unauthorize your iTunes account on your new machine. Do it on the old machine though.

  • Flash CS6 cant open play SWF files without importing and destroying them, how can I get around this?

Flash CS6 can't open play SWF files without importing and destroying them, how can I get around this?
I'm just trying to preview an swf file in flash like I have with all previous versions.

What if my SWF loads external content from an online server?
Not only does the current flash player prohibit such activity, it doesn't even pop open an error anymore saying there was an error connecting to an online source.
Normally, I would simply drag the SWF into Flash and all connections would go through.  I could see traces, errors, and experience no issues.
Now I can't even do that.  So what then?  You have crippled a fundamental use of the program, but THANK GOD we have that deco brush that nobody asked for.
And for the record, the nature of my work benefits from not necessarily allowing the Flash Player to connect to online content.  The error it pops up?  That's simply another method of error checking that I require.  Updating the Flash Player options is not an option.
Why would you even remove this key feature from Flash anyways?  It's been there for years ... has the ratio of people importing SWFs (a rather useless gesture in an increasing OOP world) really outweighed the people using Flash as a testing environment that much?

What is the GarageBand version that your friend is using?
If it is GarageBand '11, version 6.0.5, you can buy GarageBand '11 as a boxed retail version with the iLIfe '11 bundle, e.g. from Amazon.
Then you can upgrade GarageBand '11 to 6.0.5, using this upgrader from the Support page:
                     GarageBand 6.0.5
GarageBand 6.0.5 will work well with your system.  But if your friend is using the newest GarageBand 10, this will not help. Then ask your friend to send you audio files for each track, so you can recreate the project from the audio.  Or your friend could also use GarageBand '11 for the projects you want to share, that will run well in all newer MacOS X versions, even with GarageBand 10.0 installed on the same system.

  • Can't open old files in Pages. Don't want to upgrade. Help please

I am happy with my old Pages program ... some files I created on the old Pages open fine, as normal. However, some files I created on the
old Pages (created in Dec. 2013) will not open. I get a pop up from Apple saying that I have to upgrade.
I would be delighted to upgrade and pay the $20 but I read horrible reviews about the new Pages upgrade. So I would like to stick with my old
Pages but how can I open these files that are closed to me unless I purchase the new upgrade. Inexplicably, I can open some files that I created this month on the old pages. But some will not open.
Is there a trick to opening these Pages files ?
Or should I go ahead and get the new download and take a chance. I only mix text with photos ... no footnotes.
    Please help.  Many thanks ..

Hi Jerry ... you were absolutely correct ... I must have downloaded the new version since I found Pages-Applications in Spotlight. Then I dragged it from Application to the dock where it now sits next to my old Pages. I tried to open up my file but still could not. How can I export it back to Word 09 (my old Pages) if I cannot open it. And this file will not open now, even when I have my new Pages in the dock. Or should I just give up on opening this file.
Also, I think I prefer the old Pages (Word 09) ... how can I make sure that I am creating documents in this program. I assume that I can keep it and continue to work with that. I guess the only way to prevent this from happening again is to check if I am using the old Pages before I start a document ??
    Many thanks again, Don

  • Office for Mac 2011 - can't open old files

I am currently on Mac OS X v10.6.8.  I recently installed Office for Mac 2011.  I cannot open some of my old files.  I think the ones that use the old file names, e.g. .doc and .xls, rather than .docx and .xlsx.
Can anyone explain how I can open these files in my Office for Mac 2011?
    Many thanks!

The free LibreOffice will open them, and it's the most cross platform office program (Linux, OS X and Windows versions)
