How do I open the disc tray if it goes straight to console?

I am having an issue where my G5 boots straight to the console. I have been told to re-install the os, but nobody has been able to tell me how to open the disc tray to put the install disc in.
anybody know?
thanks,
mvw

Press the mouse button or the eject key or F12 at startup. You can also press the Option, Command, O, and F keys, and enter 'eject cd' followed by 'mac-boot' without the quote marks.

    How do you open the DVD tray on a K430 without using Windows Explorer? I can't find a button on or below the door.  Am I missing something?  Additionally, will the K430 boot from a DVD/CD if it finds one in the DVD tray instead of the hard disk?  Please help. Thanks.

    hi penguin247,
    Regarding your questions:
    1. Can you try to press the eject symbol on the DVD bay and observe if the DVD tray comes out.
    Link to picture
    2. By default, the HDD is set as the first boot device and the ODD second on the K430. You will need to change the boot order or continuously tap F12 during POST to boot from the ODD (assuming you have a bootable media inserted).

  • How do I open the CD tray using Windows Keyboard

    How do I open the CD tray of my eMac using a Windows Keyboard that does not have a eject button? If I use uControl Program to switch the alt and Window Keys (the option and ⌘ Keys) I can't use the iJect Program.

    shulmice,
    While not a perfect answer since you have to be logged in before you can open the tray, you can put an eject icon in the menu bar by double-clicking on ~/System/ Library/ CoreServices/ Menu Extras/ Eject.menu

  • SORRY TO SEEM SO STUPID BUT CAN SOMEONE TELL ME HOW TO ACTUALLY OPEN THE DISC PLAYER?

    This is my first Mac.......please, how hard can it be to find out how to open the disc drive? I found out how to put it in...duh....but not how to actually open it. Help please......not very computer literate, sorry, but I'm trying.

    Click on the button with the same symbol as the Eject key at the right edge of the menu bar. If you don't see one, choose Go to Folder from the Finder's Go menu, provide /System/Library/CoreServices/Menu Extras/ as the path, and double-click the Eject.menu item. If this doesn't produce an usable option to eject the drive, you have a slot-loading drive with nothing inside and can just insert a CD or DVD into it.

    If your computer no longer starts up then you will need to reinstall Snow Leopard:
    Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
    If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.

    Five ways to eject a stuck CD or DVD from the optical drive
    Ejecting the stuck disc can usually be done in one of the following ways:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the left mouse button until the disc ejects.
    2. Press the Eject button on your keyboard.
    3. Click on the Eject button in the menubar.
    4. Press COMMAND-E.
    5. If none of the above work try this: Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt enter or paste the following:
         /usr/bin/drutil eject
    If this fails then try this:
    Boot the computer into Single-user Mode. At the prompt enter the same command as used above. To restart the computer enter "reboot" at the prompt without quotes.

  • OS 10.4, non-Apple keyboard, How to open the CD tray?

    How do you open the CD tray with OS 10.4 and a non-Apple keyboard?
    F12 used to work but this was changed in 10.4 to trigger the stupid Dashboard.

    F12 does not work for me, but I accept that if other people can make it work, then I need to figure out why it doesn't work for me. Glad to know there is a solution on the horizon.
    Regarding adding the CD eject control to the Finder menu; that's a great idea. I should have remembered that was possible. For reference, the location of that menu add-on and others is:

    Snow Leopard's Startup Disk pref can’t see Yosemite volumes. So the only way to switch from Snow Leopard to Yosemite is to do what Niel mentioned. Doesn't matter whether it's connected by USB or Firewire, although performance via FW would be faster.
    Are you saying that Yos/10.10, as a volume located in a mounted external drive won't appear as an option in Snow Leopard's Startup Disc, in Sys Prefs? I've never heard this one before. AFAIK any mounted volume, regardless of OS, should appear there. I would think that, if it appears in the Boot Picker/Startup Manager it would also appear and could be booted to from Snow's Startup Disk. I can't test this myself, since I don't have Yos. Is what you are saying documented somewhere?

  • HP Pavilion g7-2270us: The disc tray won't open when I press the button!

    Hi everyone! I've had my laptop for a day or two now, and I love it! Today, though, I wanted to burn a disc, and realized that when I push the button on the disc tray to open it, it won't open.
    It still opens, though; I can go to Computer> Right Click the disc driver> Eject, and the tray opens just fine. Is the button defective?
    I mean, it's not all that bad, and if that's the only problem, I can deal with it. It's not going to get worse, is it? Should I concern myself with replacing it?
    Thank you in advance!
    Also, I apologize if this is in the wrong section...

    Hi,
    It does sound like a mechanical defect with the optical drive release mechanism.  While this may well not cause any other issues, seeing as this is a brand new machine, my best advice would be to simply return the notebook to the retailer it was purchased from and get a replacement.
    Best regards,

  • Help!!!! How do I get the CD Tray to open using Java

    Please I need some help.... A bit line of code that will open the CD tray for a windows OS.
    Cheers

    I don't think there's a suitable java API.
    Try using the following vbscript...
    'declarations ( put in module )
    Declare Function mciSendString Lib "winmm.dll" Alias "mciSendStringA" (ByVal lpstrCommand As String, ByVal lpstrReturnString As String, ByVal uReturnLength As Long, ByVal hwndCallback As Long) As Long
    'actual code: put this in a command button or something . .
    Dim lngReturn As Long
    Dim strReturn As Long
    'To open the CD door, use this code:
    lngReturn = mciSendString("set CDAudio door open", strReturn, 127, 0)
    'To close the CD door, use this code:
    lngReturn = mciSendString("set CDAudio door closed", strReturn, 127, 0)

  • I reinstalled a new Hard Drive but cannot get the DVD tray to open to install the Mac OS?  How do I open the Tray?

    I reinstall a new Hard drive.  But I cannot open the DVD tray to install the OS?  All I get the the ? in the folder when the computer turns on?

    Hi copa1226:
    Sometimes the best solutions are the manual ones.  There is a mechanical fail safe built in to these devices,  I have had to use this method several times myself, so ....
    .....   Try this:
    1) Power off your mac pro.
    2) With your finger, pull down the metal bezel on the affected drive.
    3) You should now see the front plastic bezel on the affected drive, it is usually black or grey.
    4) Look for a small pinhole somewhere on the front. It will have a very small diameter, about 0.5mm.
    5) Yes it's there, all cd/dvd drives have one!   Note: a small flashlight comes in handy here.
    6) Straighten out a standard paperclip for about 2 -3 inches.
    7) Insert the paperclip in the small hole and push, you will have some resistance, and then the drive tray will slowly push out about 0.5 inches or more.
    8) Grab the tray and pull it out !!
    9) You are done!
    10) If you do this gently you won't hurt the drive. Boot up and the tray should automatically slide back in. You are good to go.

  • I can't open the DVD tray

    I can't open the DVD tray. There's nothing inside. I hear a sound (a grrrr) but it won't open.
    I had that 2-3 times in the last 5 years and I always managed to open it by pushing the "DVD ROM drive open button" while I restart but not this time.
    I also tried to put a paper clip in the little hole but that doesn't work either.
    In the Apple help site, they say push the "eject media key" on your keyboard; I didn't know where that is but I know now it's the F12 key; when I push it I hear a sound coming from the tray (like a electric screwdriver) but nothing happens.
    So what can I do ?
    I saw that Andrew Favret had the same problem in October and Don Archibald said:
    • Boot or restart the machine, immediately press the Option key, keep it held down. This will bring up Startup Manager. Once Startup Manager has finished loading, press the key combo Command-. (Command-Periodkey). This should open the tray.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    I tried the "Option" key. The Start Up Manager appeared: A display with my 5 drives in the middle, and a Right Arrow icon on the right.
    I did click on the right arrow and it started to load normally as it does when you turn the computer on.
    So I try the whole thing again and now instead of clicking on the right arrow, I tried the command and period key. I hear again, a sound coming from the tray and I see the icon for "eject" on the screen but nothing happens. Tried 5-6 times. And the F12 key don't have any effect at this time.
    If I had a disc in the tray, I'm sure the icons for the DVD drive will appear but the tray is empty.
    Not sure if there's a relation but I just upgraded that same day to a new version of iTunes (from version 7 to 8.0.2) and 3 other upgrades: QuickTime player (from 7.1.3 to 7.5.5) Plus Java and Security something.
    Usually there is a CD/DVD in the tray that won't eject, but you say the tray is empty. Are there any other users of you Mac, especially kids? Someone may have placed something in the tray that is causing the jam.
    Here's the usual fixes.
    First try a Restart while holding down the mouse button.
    If that doesn’t work, look at these links:
  • I'm trying to install bootcamp and XP, but when keyboard does't work. How can I eject the disc?
    How can I eject the disc and start over and get into the OSX system?
    XP isn't supported in BootCamp, you'll have to use the free VirualBox or one of the other commercial virtual machine softwares to run it in a window on OS X. The performance isn't going to be good enough for 3D games or heavy CPU ones, but good enought for most general use software.
    Apple doesn't supply the hybrid MBR and hardware drivers required to run XP in BootCamp any longer. If you were on Snow Leopard 10.6 it's still possible, but not Lion or Mountain Lion.
    This is what you do to resolve your problem.
    1: Hold the power button down to force a hardware shutdown (emergency use only use the Apple Menu > shutdown all other times)
    2: Press and hold the option/alt key on the keyboard.
    3: Boot the computer and enter Startup Manager
    4: Keep pressing the eject key on the keyboard, the disk will eject.
    5: Select OS X to boot from by clicking on the volume and the little arrow that appears.
    6: Set Startup Disk in System Preferences  to OS X.
    7: Head to BootCamp Utility and use it to remove the BootCamp partition.
    8: If you used Disk Utility, then use that to remove the second partition and absorb the remaining space back into the OS X partition.
    9: Install VirtualBox, if on 10.8 you migh have to control/right click and "Open" to bypass Gatekeeper controls for the installer and/or program at least once.
    10: Read the instructions how to setup and use VirtualBox.
